Was an avid ER fan 20+ yes ago. See its now on netflux, started rewatching. Its so superior to anything I have watched recently on TV. I had forgotten just how good it was! Anyone else?

I actually like Mark Greene, I see him as passionate about his job rather than egotistical. And I love Doug Ross! I think Bentin is the arrogant egotistical one, especially when it comes to his mother and sister/BIL.

I think you’ve probably not got to the episodes with Mark and Cynthia and when he starts dating again.

Cynthia, brilliant played by Mariska Hargitay in this role prior to the tough olivia benson

I loved ER, the start of my lifelong love of Maura Tierney. I've also started watching it again as I never actually finished it. I am absolutely dreading the bit with Romano in S9 because it has haunted me for decades and it wasn't long after that I stopped watching it. I don't know why that was particularly difficult to handle!

I also noticed Benton coming over as a better character and a lot more tidy and handsome than I remembered from the first time round.

yes. She’s so beautiful as well. Jane Mansfield’s daughter.

maysayyea · 22/03/2026 08:51

i could never work out Peter Benton’s age, he’s newly qualified surgeon so must have been late twenties/early 30s, but his mother seems to be late 70s.

RancidRuby · 22/03/2026 09:20

This will be my third rewatch, it’s such a great show and I never tire of it. I’m up to season 6 already and nothing else is getting a look in, I’ve not even bothered with Aus MAFS this year!

I’m seeing some of the characters in such a different light now that I’m older and wiser. I can’t stand Doug, when I first watched it I thought he was a lovable rogue but now I see him as a bit of a narcissist. Loved Carter the first time around and still love him now, such a likeable character. I didn’t really understand Benton previously but I can appreciate just why he’s so single minded now. And I always thought Weaver was a right pain in the arse but there is so much more to her than I’d realised.

It's one or my fave shows (special interests)
I loved the scenes when Romano showed his human side
I HATED Gates and Taggart
Loved the benton / reece moments
And we have all worked with a kerry weaver...

Romano was funny, all arrogance and sarkiness but then the mask did slip occasionally and you saw he was actually a nice guy just pretended to be tough when he wasn't.

I liked Greene, yes no nonsense but you'd have wanted him looking after you. The flashbacks in series 15 were clever when Banfield's dc was dying in ER and Greene was looking after him. Must've been hard to recreate that scene from years ago.

Gates and Taggart should have been given bit parts they seemed to star in all the last eps and their characters just were not interesting enough.

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 22/03/2026 22:41

Romano was my favourite love-to-hate character, but when he brought his dog in for surgery my heart melted

I'm watching for the first time and absolutely loving it, it's thirty years old but feels head and shoulders above many of the medical dramas today. Jeanie's HIV storyline was great and so important at the time, it's heartbreaking to see how she's treated. The characters feel like old friends and I love it. Omar Epps is even in it, Foreman from House (the early years...)!

I love Benton, Carter I go back and forth on, Doug and Carol, Susan, Mark. And the nurses are fun, Haleh is my favourite.

I'm some way into season 3 and just watched the episode where Susan leaves Mark at the station after his heartfelt confession. I'm not sure I've ever been so emotionally destroyed by a 'what if' TV relationship. Susan, girl!! Get off that train and ask him to come with you 🤣 to Phoenix. I kind of hate how they had her brush him off as just friends, when it was obviously more than that for her too - it was building to something with the way she looked at him, wanting to invite him to Hawaii, etc. I know it was because the actress abruptly left the show, and that their plan was to have them together, so that was a shame. Mark frustrated me so much though!!! He waited too long and was too scared to tell her what everyone around them already knew. My husband's watched the DVD commentaries some years ago and remembers the show runner saying even as far back as season 1 l, they were dropping hints that Susan and Mark loved each other, even when he was married to Jen.

And it was big news at the time so I do know about Mark later on, so it just makes the fact they never got together super heartbreaking
Just me?

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 30/03/2026 13:41

I’m watching it and loving it!

I agree Mark Greene is selfish, but most of them are completely married to the job.

Benton is so hot 🥵 I really like his character even when he’s being a dick 🙈😂

Ross is a nightmare really, he just thinks the rules don’t apply to him and he’s happy to take others down with him.

MrsArcher23 · 30/03/2026 13:47

Favourite show ever but The Pitt is a worthy successor IMO

MangosCarlsen · 30/03/2026 13:49

I want to but I can’t go through Greene’s brain cancer death again!

There was definitely something between Susan and Greene right from the beginning of s1 it has been really obvious on a rewatch

whirlyhead · 30/03/2026 14:13

I always think that whoever wrote Romano's death had a great sense of humour and imagined that Romano had seriously pissed off a helicopter in a previous life...

I'm on my third watch and I still love Carter. He was alway my fave. I'm watching concurrently with The Pitt which is like ER 30 years on only slower and with waaay better technology. The difference in how they intubate nowadays as opposed to the 90s is amazing.

I have no medical knowledge. I think I have watched too many medical dramas.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 30/03/2026 20:14

I’m watching the episode where Benton goes to Mississippi, I love him so much 🙈😂

I've loved ER forever, nothing else matches up, I've just started The Pitt & so far so good, not as engaging character wise but I'll def stick with it & now I can flowering the thread too!
Benton was always the one for me & he didn't make it easy, same with Romano 😎

Usernamenotfound1 · 30/03/2026 20:55

er is still the medical drama imo. They did it first when it comes to storylines.

Romano is my massive crush. Love him.

benton my opinion changes each time I watch it. First time I thought he was an utter arse, loved him on second watch, now I can’t remember why he’s an arse/why I love him.

still would go for Romano though. Carter a close second. Have just started the Pitt so will see.

later series I did like ray, morris turned out ok.

Gant 🫣. Storyline that was rehashed with George in Greys anatomy.

i remember being shown the live episode? The one with the decontamination/chemical scenes when I started work in a chem lab in a hospital.

but yes, Romano 🥰

@Usernamenotfound1 I just watched the episode with Gant at the end, I liked the whole night shift vibe and it was very light-hearted until that.

Is this a safe space to admit to this thread that I find Mark Greene really sexy? Don't get me wrong, sometimes he annoys me, but Anthony Edwards has such kind, sad eyes. I could get lost in them.

Dameputtingonabraveface · 31/03/2026 19:33

I rewatch ER all the time, it has been on More4 for years. It holds up really well, although went on too long as the last few series were not great (in comparison) but it certainly blows Casualty and Charlie Fairhed out of the water 😀.

It was so ground breaking at the time, but still feels so current. As I have got older I have come to view Doug Ross as a sleezey arsehole with a God complex, rather than a maverick hero. Never really got the Hathaway love either. It is a programme that works because of its many parts. Every character (apart from Doug Ross) is nuanced and human. Even the supporting cast such as the the receptionists and less visible nurses.

The humour and warmth is wonderful and very recognisable to anyone who has worked 'at the coalface' in public facing settings where you cannot shut the door. It still makes me sob at at times, even though I know what is coming. This is because it shows the fragility of human life and how things can change on a moment, how hard life can be and the unfairness and also how kindness and empathy really matters in bleak times.

I absolutely loved Abby and Luka, they were so perfectly imperfect together. I really hope they are happy together somewhere with Joe these days.....

NobodysChildNow · 31/03/2026 19:35

I am loving the rewatch! I watched it with my late mum , and I can remember my mum’s reactions to some of the episodes so I’m finding it quite hear my wrenching!

Recommend if you have Sky, watching The Pitt alongside it. No where near as good as ER, but fun to see Noah Wyle at the other end of his career playing a doctor again.

Usernamenotfound1 · 31/03/2026 19:41

The Pitt I think is less tv drama. I watched er and the pile on millions of people in the room over the top everything going on at once makes for good tv and showing hero doctors. The Pitt is more realistic with each person knowing their role, quieter, more calculated.

mummymayhem18 · 31/03/2026 19:57

I too am rewatching it. Just up to midway season 6. I like Carter,Benton and Luka has just started. There are so many other famous names that you see as small parts over the seasons before they became more famous down the line.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 31/03/2026 20:14

Love’s Labor Lost is still one of the best bits of TV ever made. So sad.
