Was an avid ER fan 20+ yes ago. See its now on netflux, started rewatching. Its so superior to anything I have watched recently on TV. I had forgotten just how good it was! Anyone else?

I found Kem’s fishing about Carter’s financial situation a bit grating.

When she asked about whether he can afford the AIDS treatment, and the questions about the solicitor’s letters.

Usernamenotfound1 · 05/06/2026 10:40

I think it’s that in later seasons he’s turned into Dr Robbie. 🤣. Burned out, traumatised after the stabbing, seriously unwell with the kidney issues. Mentally and physically finished. Africa shows he can only function in trauma.

kem was supposed to lighten him up, “rescue” him and heal him. But it didn’t work. They fell into the US centric trap that only Americans can be super rich- if she is Congolese educated in France, with that accent, her family must be very well off themselves.

instead of Kem lightening up Carter, she makes him look old and boring, with baggage he can’t overcome. Even when she gets pregnant, it’s an accident and they never seem to plan their future properly.

I’m overthinking 🤣

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 05/06/2026 10:44

I didn’t like the way she marked her territory when she first met Abby.

Watched this again when it was streaming on Channel 4 then it abruptly stopped with no warning so I'm pleased I can finish it on Netflix.

The early series with Carter, Benton, Weaver, Romano, Corday and Green all so totally superior to the later ones with wet Neela, boring Abby, equally boring Gates and Sam. Though Morris saved the day in those very dull eps.

I wonder if they have different writers in the later series?

Couldn't agree more. I did keep watching but it was never quite the same in later years.
Actually I quite liked Abby and Luka. But the OG cast was the best.
I love the party scene at Nurse Carol Hathaway's house (or one of her family's houses?) when they're all dancing and singing to 'Tequila'.

God, I feel like I want to start a rewatch now, but it'd take years!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 05/06/2026 11:30

I agree earlier series are better, I think it’s a more diverse cast in early series as well, the later series almost everyone is white 🙄

Im finding the homophobia weird, surely by 2007 having a gay brother wouldn’t be a massive deal?! Maybe it’s different in America.

I didn’t like Kem either, I didn’t get the relationship as it was clear that Kem would never move to America and eventually Carter would want to come home. I thought she was patronising and condescending towards Carter, in rl a rich Dr like him would have a beautiful wife and 5 kids by the time he was 35!

Pasta4Dinner · 05/06/2026 12:02

Carter clearly had issues from his parents absence. He just wanted someone to want him and he would have been a great father. It’s really sad they couldn’t give the character that,

Raahh · 06/06/2026 20:40

I'm starting series 15 Sad

I have just read that one of the reasons 14 ended a bit abruptly (which it did) was there was a writers strike. The end of 14 felt so rushed.

Neela was meant to have more of a 'thing' with Brenner, apparently. I never liked him, so I'm glad it didn't happen .

ScaredButUnavoidable · 08/06/2026 13:19

Just watched the episode where Pratt got shot at whilst driving and his car ended up in the river. I really though he was going to die, and the female doctor with him (whose name i cant remember) 😢

He’s now back at work and seems to have turned into a bit of a dick and is treating the Interns like shit. Why do they do this to characters?!

How sad was it when Carter and Ken’s baby died? Heartbreaking 😢

Dr Lewis has just returned after maternity leave and so I’m looking forward to seeing her more as she seems to be about the only nice character left (apart from the wonderful Abby of course).

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 08/06/2026 19:41

In America it seems you can just check yourself into rehab whenever you want?

Im up to Abbie going full on alcoholic again.

Raahh · 08/06/2026 20:01

I have just watched episode 5 of season 15- at the end there is a credit because Michael Crichton (the creator of the series) died.

It's very sad that he died during the final series, and he was really no age at all.

If you can pay for it yes.

Part of why I am very against private medicine. Veers into the unethical you can have it if you can pay for it rather than is it medically necessary.

seen it with vets. Pages of insurance claims for unecessary treatment.

Pasta4Dinner · 08/06/2026 21:32

i imagine rehab may depend on what kind of insurance you have.
I have a friend who is a GP and people do ask about being sent to rehab and he has to explain it’s not a thing here unless you can pay for it, it’s almost exclusively out patient.

Yes I remember the writers strike, season 14 was a huge drop in quality and the storylines went very soapy.
On rewatch I fast forwarded through a lot I found it so boring! Did not like Brenner at all.
Hated what they did with Abby, as Kovac’s character left.

Usernamenotfound1 · 09/06/2026 19:32

Brenner I always thought was the plot line Owen Hunt had in GA, but they never got chance to develop it. Clear PTSD, redemption with a surgeon…

there are a few characters I would have liked to see more of - mallucci for example. Again the American idea that someone can say “you’re sacked” and that’s it, you’re gone the same day. Where’s the performance plan, the verbal warnings, written warnings, the meetings on how to support staff to improve…especially in a busy hospital.

I can’t remember kovac leaving? Or Abby after that.

Kovac leaving was a bit odd- there was no big send -off episode, though Abby got one (The Book of Abby).
The actor playing Kovac chose to leave, as a main character, when his contract was up at the end of series 13- but came back a few times to tie up loose ends.

Then Abby left- and he literally turned up that episode to pick her up at the hospital. No lines , nothing. They were leaving for Boston that day(?)- and no-one even said anything to him!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 09/06/2026 21:14

Did Sam’s son just go to the naughty boys school and never come home?!

Raahh · 09/06/2026 21:28

No -Alex does come home (and things get complicated a bit later)

But- I was confused when she first dropped him off, because I'm sure she said something about seeing him in a couple of weeks/ he wouldn't be there long. And it was much longer than that.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 09/06/2026 21:47

Hmm Sam's annoying me quite a lot, she is really judgmental and aggressive. Plus she’s just worked a shift with massive gold hoop earrings which is definitely a bad idea for an ER nurse!

ScaredButUnavoidable · 09/06/2026 22:30

I’ve just watched the episode where Abby is snogging her student intern and Neela has a crush on Kovac and I’m not sure where it has all come from.

I either missed a few episodes or slept through some of them 🤣

Raahh · 10/06/2026 08:20

I'm coming to the end of series 15- and i've realised this re-watch has been an interesting socal experimentGrin.

It has shown me how much my viewing habits changes between the first season and the last- I hardly remember the last season properly . The first seasons I watched avidly, real appointment t.v,- and although I did record it sometimes, (work shifts, in my 20s, sharing houses/moving on my own) by the end, I was married with 2 children. and I think I watched it when I got the chance, probably in bits and pieces. I made a special effort to watch the finale, I do remember that- but dh wasn't/isn't a fan, so I would wait and watch episodes on my own.

So- although bits are coming back- I had hazy half'memories of season 15 , before I rewatched, - I knew Gates and Sam were irritating, Brenner annoyed me- I barely remembered Angela Bassett's character- no episode stood out much. I think it was a lot of memories of it being a bit disappointing and missing all the 'old' characters, more than the plots. (Lots of cameos and 'guest appearances' from old cast members though- some feel more natural than others).

pinotnow · 10/06/2026 12:28

The only episode that stood out to me from season 15 was the one with Mark Green and the death of Angela Bassett's character's son - I thought that was a great episode. Though I must say Greene did look older and fatter than he had done during that time!

Usernamenotfound1 · 10/06/2026 12:32

I really don’t like Angela Bassett. She has a very “angry” style of acting and I can never feel any sympathy for her characters.

Raahh · 10/06/2026 12:44

No ,it didn't really work as a flashback episode, the Mark one. I get they were getting all the old cast members back , one way or another- but he did look older, and too healthy for a man who was going through cancer treatment (his character during the actual period it was set in looked way more 'gaunt').

Raahh · 10/06/2026 12:47

I do really like Morris/ Claudia though, in series 15. They are well suited, and Morris's character is given a good ending .

And Claudia isn't a doctor/ nurse,, which makes a change. He does meet her through the hospital, but it's still a win. Grin.

Raahh · 11/06/2026 12:15

I've now finished- I feel a bit sad about it really .

I'm glad I've re-watched it- makes me realise I don't really remember much of it !

I did like them bringing back so many of the cast at the end- but Kem annoyed me (true to her character though- and no mention of the fact Carter had just had a kidney transplant- ddn't she know?! She was so self asorbed).

I need to find something else to watch now Grin
