Ah thank you, I didn’t realise people with dementia go downhill in a hospital environment and I agree Sue is doing amazing with it

Sharon Marshall on TM said no Emmerdale or Corrie on Friday, it’s the Six Nations

TipsyPeachSnake · 04/03/2026 14:31

I think the problem with mentioning big news stories in any drama is it then quickly dates the program. Sometimes it’s done but I prefer to be away from specific real world events and in the land of soaps while I’m watching.

The thing that I find odd about Corrie in terms of real life is I remember them making a big thing of how poor Chesney and Gemma were at one point and they couldn’t afford the basics, then the Cost of Living Crisis hit in real life, they didn’t change jobs and suddenly they seem to be able to afford everything they need, she dyed her hair from blonde to dark and obviously can afford to maintain it, she is often in clothes we have never seen her in before, her quads have started school so will be more expensive with uniforms and every scene she is in she seems to be eating out or drinking in the pub!

zanahoria · 04/03/2026 14:51

Ches and Gemma turned down Freshcos sponsorship money as it "wasn't real" preferring the reality of poverty.

Alrhough Joseph still goes to Oakhill as Granny Moneybags pays. Although we never see him there, weren't there some kids who were mocking his humble background? Not pleasant but he is probably the only one at the school who has to share a bedroom with his four brothers and sisters.

We have not even seen Granny Moneybags for a while. I love her absurd visits and her moneybags, none of which ever find their way to Izzy or her other grandson. She barely even talks to Izzy.

TipsyPeachSnake · 04/03/2026 15:04

Gemma & Chesney would be able to claim a lot in benefits for the quads compared to other families as the 2 child cap would not apply to them. There is also the disability benefits and possibly carer banefits they could claim in respect of one of the quads. Corrie does not like to mention benefits though!

TipsyPeachSnake · 04/03/2026 15:07

It amazes me how many residents call in to Roy’s for a cup of tea or coffee when they live just a few doors away

eggandonion · 04/03/2026 15:25

I would go to Roys so I could listen into secret conversations. It is very greasy looking though.

zanahoria · 04/03/2026 15:56

The dog poo stuff is disgusting

Adam had every right to complain and Shona should have blamed her sister for bringing trouble to her door not having a go at him

Then she was off down the pub moaning she had not been out in ages when she had been hammered the other week

eggandonion · 04/03/2026 16:03

David the dogs storyline is quite realistic. I have a neighbour who doesn't pick up because Buster is so tiny his poop is so small
I wouldn't trust Jodie with David the dog though .

Shellingbynight · 03/03/2026 15:35

@LesserSpottedCharacter Once Harper gets home we'll hear no more about her - until she's kidnapped by Jodie of course!

Yep after doggy Dave mysteriously jumps his lead and goes missing ! Makes me wince every time she offers to take him out 🙈

the80sweregreat · 04/03/2026 17:31

Jodie is acting very strangely and clearly after David and her sisters life. She is just trying to put a wedge between them. So far it’s not worked that well.
The dog poo is horrible. All she needs to buy are some bags out of Sainsbury’s! It’s only across the street.

LesserSpottedCharacter · 04/03/2026 18:03

Thank you @JewelleryCat for the no Corrie on Friday heads up. I normally get slightly irked when the schedules are mucked about with because Corrie's part of my routine and it helps me know what day it is Blush but I felt nothing but an "Oh well". Sad times.

I agree, Shona was ridiculous with her behaviour towards Adam, and in general. There are people who think the way people in soaps behave is how they should behave in real life. It doesn't do anyone any favours.

TipsyPeachSnake · 04/03/2026 18:04

I’ve watched todays episode and agree Jodie is just WEIRD. I don’t understand what her game is.

Also if rumours are true that Steve and Ma Driscolls son are brothers that would make Amy and Ollie, who are on verge of dating, cousins!

She has bags, the first time she just forgot them and then was accosted by Toyah but ever since she has just let David shit where ever he likes

They never seem to mention what’s going on in the world do they. Big things like Brexit, Covid, wars, never get talked about. Considering they have a paper shop is a fairly regular feature too it’s a bit odd. I suppose they want to keep things ‘light’ and let the viewers have some relaxing escapism, so they throw in serial killers & domestic violence instead.

Yeah I have noticed this. I think this has been mentioned before. (Some years ago.) It may be hard with them filming some 7 weeks in advance, but they could chuck an extra clip in that they've done that week. Just half a minute or so.

Big news at the moment about Iran and Trump etc, and the furore about Student Loans, but nothing being mentioned by anyone. I think they may have mentioned Covid but that rattled on for ages!

I don't recall hearing them going on about Brexit, or any wars, or anything. Hardly anything when there's a World Cup or The Olympics. The Lionesses won the Football World Cup - twice, and not a single mention! No mention of Oscars or Grammys or Brits or anything. OR how Labour have had a dozen U-turns, or about Reform and Nigel Farage etc.... Things that many people would be talking about. Maybe they're not allowed to discuss politics, possibly, but they ever mention anything!

Then again, much of Corrie is nothing like real life in the 2020s.. Multiple family members living in the same street, every family a 'blended' family, no couple ever stays together, a HUGE amount of bad guys, villains, and thugs, half the street have been in trouble with the police (and some have been in prison!) almost everyone works in the street, and dates someone in the street, and every few months a family member turns up - and they have often never been mentioned before... When someone leaves they pack up their whole life into two suitcases in about an hour, and leave in a taxi... They seem to find somewhere to stay, and a job, and the money to move, all in about 3 hours!

It feels like the lifestyles, and some of what goes on may have been a thing - for some - at the end of the 1950s when Coronation Street was created, (like people working close to where they live, people dating and marrying local people, extended family living closeby, and people socialising with people they work with,) but it's nothing like it now, (for most people,) so the whole concept is very unreal and inaccurate. (As I say, for most people......)

.

Of course yes scenes are filmed 6-8 weeks in advance so it is pointless mentioning any news story as by the time program is aired it would be old news. They tried to do it one time with Covid story about lockdown being lifted and by the time it aired we had just gone in to a 2nd lockdown!

JewelleryCat · 04/03/2026 20:45

I thought I read somewhere a few years ago now that they didn’t like to do real life events because the soaps were supposed to be lighthearted and relief away from the real world

SabreIsMyFave · 04/03/2026 20:48

Possibly @JewelleryCat Smile

Yeah, they did come thick and fast those lockdowns! 😬

They can’t do real life events as that would mean script writers predicting the future

JewelleryCat · 04/03/2026 20:50

SabreIsMyFave · 04/03/2026 20:48

Possibly @JewelleryCat Smile

Mind you, the soaps right now aren’t light relief with Debbie’s dementia, all the prison stuff, Harpers operation etc

LOL, very true! Corrie used to be lighter and funnier. It's quite grim now sometimes!

I know right. It's just a shame they couldn't just film something quickly now and again, and pop it in somewhere (that day or that week.) I'm sure they've done this for Eastenders a few times.

OP posts:
JellyBeanSpring25 · 04/03/2026 21:00

I remember nearly 40-years ago in Eastenders, Wendy Richards standing by the kitchen sink, camera outside and looking in at her and she said something about being so sad to hear the news about the Herald of Free Enterprise tragedy on the same day of the news coming through (she sank overnight 6 March 1987). They must have filmed that segment and spliced it in before broadcast that day. Some things just stick in your mind. 💔

1reason · 04/03/2026 21:10

@SabreIsMyFave
Some small on topic mentions...quite subtle.
Mary mentioned The Brits just last week...and Ben Shepherd!
National Pie Week has been given a nod twice this week..leftover pie from the cafe provided for Platts tea by Josie. Shona and David discussed sending Dr Harper a cheese and onion pie!
'Gorton' was mentioned too..but not in the bye-election sense.
