15 mins into episode One and i don’t think it’s going to be a Peaky Blinders or Downton Abbey level programme. Maybe it’ll improve but I don’t like the way one minute it’s “serious” drama and the next minute there’s some very out of place modern music playing full blast over an action scene. Hope that calms down.

Anyone else watching?

Yes, I’m having a go. It’s diverting enough, but agree about some bits being a bit jarring. There’s a lot going on.

KylieKangaroo · 25/09/2025 22:51

I turned it off after 20 mins, just following here to see if it gets any better. I could not really get into it and seems just like Peaky Blinders as mentioned.

Sleepeatcrochetrepeat · 25/09/2025 22:51

I watched the first episode this evening. The use of modern music seems to be a ‘thing’ for some shows now, I can’t say I liked it much tbh.
The accents of some of the cast are all over the place, I’m certain there must be plenty of Irish actors to cast instead of this awful mess.
I will keep watching though, the two brothers receiving condolences at the wake was surprisingly good, and I do enjoy an explosion. Lots of storylines being set up so it did jump around, but I’m interested enough to keep going.

I was so looking forward to this, it looked amazing on the cinema trailer , I struggled through the first episode.

BaguetteLady · 26/09/2025 00:49

Don't think I'll stay with it. I do like the furniture and the costumes (!) but the music is giving me a headache, and I think it totally undermines the period atmosphere.

Yep me too, I was bored. Might try one more episode

deeahgwitch · 26/09/2025 08:28

I just read a review of it in an Irish newspaper and apparently a lot of it some of it is made up and never happened.

DataColour · 26/09/2025 09:47

I quite like the modern music and I'm mainly watching it for James Norton!

AgualusasL0ver · 26/09/2025 14:36

Watched a couple of episodes last night and quite enjoyed it. I think I will stick with it and see where it goes.

BadActingParsley · 27/09/2025 06:26

I really enjoyed it. Didn’t mind the music, love the sets, a lot of it was filmed in Liverpool.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 27/09/2025 06:28

peaky blinders has put me off

Shangrilalala · 27/09/2025 07:02

DH was very keen to watch but we really struggled. Dreadful accents from too many actors, jarring music and a lack of sympathetic characters: by the end of the first episode we didn’t care what will happen to any of them, so we ditched it.

CameForAVacationStayedForTheRevolution · 27/09/2025 07:03

Didn’t even make it to the end of episode one. The sound seems of a poor quality, some people are mumbling so bad the volume on their lines doesn’t seem loud enough but the other actor in the scene is louder and the background noise/music is also drowning them out. So combining struggling to hear them with difficulty understanding some accents I’d had enough.

Started watching Wayward instead

I struggled through to episode 3 but just cant take to it all. Found I was on my phone more than watching it. Not a lot really happened either. Very slow.

chattyness · 27/09/2025 07:09

We turned it off after 10 minutes as my DH hated it , I will try again watching by myself on my tablet as I love James Norton. I didn't like Peaky B at first but stuck with it and loved it.
We started watching Wayward instead but didn't enjoy it either.

deeahgwitch · 27/09/2025 07:23

Mumbling actors and loud background music !!!
It doesn’t have to be like that @CameForAVacationStayedForTheRevolutionbut sadly so many programmes made today are like that. ☹️

DataColour · 27/09/2025 07:33

I always watch with subtitles on these days, so the sound wasn't a problem for me.
nly Louis partridge and JN aren't Irish, and their accents are meant to be pretty accurate. It's meant to be accents from the 1860s Dublin, not current. And LPs accent will be different from JN as they are different social classes.

GelatinousDynamo · 27/09/2025 07:47

Episode 1 wasn't very good, felt like they were just introducing the characters and it was all over the place. Episode 2 was much better - I will give it another chance tonight and then decide.

placemats · 27/09/2025 08:41

I loved it. The music is fantastic! Of course it's part fictional, but the Anglo Irish Guinness dynasty has always fascinated me.

Uberaddict · 27/09/2025 09:27

agree with all of the above - I kept going until episode 3 and it got better

FightingFish · 27/09/2025 15:11

I was looking forward to this but half an episode in it hasn’t met expectations. I did laugh out loud with the rap music dropping the c bomb over the scenes in 1800s Dublin, then it went back to jaunty fiddle music. Not for me.

MyDownstairsLooisHaunted · 27/09/2025 15:58

I'm loving it 👍🏻

Got to Episode 4 and it's getting really good.

I didn't think much of Downton Abbey so it doesn't bother me it's not in the same style. In fact I much prefer the modern style, much less dreary and staid.

I think its like marmite, you either love it or hate it.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 27/09/2025 16:06

Watched episode 1 and thought it was dreadful.

GelatinousDynamo · 27/09/2025 20:57

I've watched episodes 3 and 4 tonight. It really does get much better.

ReceiveIt · 27/09/2025 21:17

The musician is rubbish! It really pulls you out of the story when they play modern music over a period drama. The only show it ever worked for was Bridgerton but thats because they made classical versions of the songs.

I'll keep watching for Irish James Norton. Be rude not to 🥵
