15 mins into episode One and i don’t think it’s going to be a Peaky Blinders or Downton Abbey level programme. Maybe it’ll improve but I don’t like the way one minute it’s “serious” drama and the next minute there’s some very out of place modern music playing full blast over an action scene. Hope that calms down.

Anyone else watching?

I loved it!!! Absolutely not a patch on Succession but I loved the music and James Norton striding about in a big coat.

AgualusasL0ver · 03/10/2025 19:06

I think quite a few of us have enjoyed it. (I couldn't get on with Succession though).

The family are also Anglo-Irish landowners so accents feasibly might be different.

Tryingatleast · 03/10/2025 19:07

I actually am really enjoying it but the cursing in it is putting me off, pretty sure everyone didn’t say the f word as a usual thing back then

Abhannmor · 03/10/2025 19:11

The real history is interesting , if a bit depressing.

FoxRedPuppy · 03/10/2025 19:46

I managed 10 minutes and then gave up.

Actors have never managed to get Irish accents right.

Not even Irish actors get the dialect right. I'd be struggling to do a generic Dublin accent coming from Armagh. Well hung man, the eldest, Arthur, spent most of his time in London. And the family were all Anglo Irish.

It's not so much their accents although I did think they were a bit too Irish for realism. It's the accents of the general populace.

Flomingho · 03/10/2025 20:28

I like it so far. Had a very Peaky Blinders vibe to it. The music is an odd choice, they maybe should have kept to the traditional Irish music.

It's dialects. Antrim for example as opposed to Armagh is very different. And about 100 miles separates them.

BlueberryLatte · 03/10/2025 20:42

I watched this and it was entertaining but quite silly. I did find some of it very cringey and formulaic. I'm Irish myself and the "cool gangster" thing didn't work for me....it was a bit Guy Ritchie and therefore felt a bit cheesy / dated.

It's made by the same person who made Peaky Blinders, so it does have that vibe and a very similar set.

Some fairly obvious beauty tweakments among some of the cast which were a bit jarring with the historical period.

I'm not sure why Anne disappeared for a few episodes. She was quite interesting sometimes.

The "we've all changed for the better" speech at the end was awful.

Playing "get your brits out" at the beginning of episode 1 was a weird choice I felt...because the full track is all about contemporary politicians like Arlene Foster etc. Was weird to hear it in 1868 or whenever

ReceiveIt · 28/09/2025 09:34

I gave up, even James Norton couldn't save that one.

Another gripe I have is the actress that played Ellen has clearly had quite a lot of filler and it looked out of place in a show set over 100 years ago. I'm not against filler, I have it myself, but it gives a very modern facial structure that looks out of place. Or maybe I'm just nit picking 🤔

Oh is that what it was. You are right: somehow she didn't look right in period costume and I couldn't place what it was.

Given that I'm Irish, yes, I'm aware of different Irish dialects😁

20mins in and I'm not sure how much longer I'll give it, raging as I renewed my Netflix membership for this . It could be great but I can't hear what they are saying so don't know what's going on, background noise too loud and voices too quiet. TV is up really loud and affecting my tinnitus and probably my neighbour's too. Absolutely hate that they've used modern music in a period drama.

DataColour · 03/10/2025 22:10

@KitchenTrollyDolly why don't you put the subtitles on? I'm probably the minority but I have subtitles for everything now so I don't have to turn up the TV up high.

Normally I would but I can't read text at that distance until my new glasses are ready.

Shame, with all the modern tech available to them, that the sound engineers can't just make it easy to hear the dialogue.

Sgtmajormummy · 03/10/2025 22:46

I really enjoyed it, including the music (except Debussy’s Arabesque played years too early), some of the songs I recognized from Christy Moore as folk songs set to modern arrangements, and I was spitting that Thin Lizzy’s “Jailbreak” got cut off with the credits!
The Prince Joffrey actor really hammed up the Oirish in Americay role and Anne’s prosthetic nose was ridiculous!
It sent me down a rabbit hole about the Iveagh trust and the rebuilding of the Liberties area around the brewery- I remember it being very rough in the 1980s.
I hope they make another series.

Calliopespa · 03/10/2025 23:13

Episode 1 took a bit of getting used too. No Downton drawing rooms or Old Lady Grantham humour here.

But episode 2 I've enjoyed a bit more, now I'm adjusting to the vibe.

Only issue for me is the physical violence. I have to close my eyes.

Sgtmajormummy · 03/10/2025 23:45

@Calliopespa
It feels like they put some sort of subsonic “thud” in the violent scenes to make you really feel the blow. So low that you only feel the vibration in your gut.
I’d be intrigued to find out.

Yes maybe they did. I only know it was more than I could take.

I'm not good watching violence generally, but really found myself wincing and recoiling.

Thistooshallpass. · 04/10/2025 21:58

Watched first two episodes tonight - really enjoying. Yes can see peaky blinders vibe and obviously it’s not a documentary based on fact . It’s entertaining.. and James Norton is dashing in his big coat - despite a questionable accent .
I do have to have subtitles on though as the sound is muffled on some speech .

Mollydoggerson · 06/10/2025 10:50

I enjoyed it, I re-subscribed to Netflix to watch it, because the guy who plays Arthur interacted with me on FB, which peaked my interest. Had to know what all the fuss was about in episode 3 🤣🤣🤣.

I ultimately am enjoying it, it's fun, who doesn't enjoy a dysfunctional rich family!!!

I agree about the sound being off, and some of it is repetitive, such as the shouting Fuuuuck all the time. It's raining so heavily you ll get baptised, I noticed that twice. ☔☔🙄🙄.

I enjoyed the music. It's a better use of TV watching time than gogglebox or any reality TV, but it's no masterpiece, Peaky Blinders was better.

What's with Anne s massive nose?

The naked flaccid willy was gratuitous.

Also, everytime they put a notice up for the workers, they can all read it. I think many of them would have been illiterate.

House of Guinness is like a mid mash of Peaky Blinders, the Great and Gangs of New York. Enjoyable winter TV, easy viewing g with wine and the fire on.

DataColour · 06/10/2025 11:32

I think that's her actual nose - the actress that plays Anne.

We also thought the same about the literacy. Especially the Fenian girl being able to write so eloquently.

DuncinToffee · 06/10/2025 11:48

I am sure it's her real nose, she was great in The Responder

mabelmaura · 06/10/2025 11:54

I loved it! The cast, the story, the style, the music, the currency updates!! Hope there is a season 2.
