15 mins into episode One and i don’t think it’s going to be a Peaky Blinders or Downton Abbey level programme. Maybe it’ll improve but I don’t like the way one minute it’s “serious” drama and the next minute there’s some very out of place modern music playing full blast over an action scene. Hope that calms down.

Anyone else watching?

I can't hear half the dialogue, crashing into the story at full bore without introducing any of the characters was annoying, and finally the Irish accents are excruciating.

Watched number 1 ¾ of the way through and won't be going back.

9 Bodies in Mexican Morgue was real fun!

Lovewine1975 · 07/10/2025 09:08

Just finished this absolutely brilliant!! Loved the music, the characters loved everything about it, hope there is a second series

deeahgwitch · 07/10/2025 09:14

The actress who plays Ellen is only 24 so certainly doesn’t need filler @ReceiveIt
Her Mum is one of Ireland’s top make up artists.

VanilleFraise · 07/10/2025 13:32

I didn't feel convinced by the relationships of edward / Ellen and rafferty/ Olivia.

They're supposed to be in love with each other but I didn't think this came over well and they didn't seem to have much chemistry.

Loved the walk through the gardens with Arthur and Edward in the last episode- the shots with the dahlia beds and the spattered fruit - mainly coz I've worked there in the past - croxteth hall walled garden.

VanilleFraise · 07/10/2025 13:46
  • espaliered fruit not spattered fruit

Oh how disappointing! I was looking forward to the rather psychadelic-sounding fruit spattered episode!

Sorry about that! The joys of autocorrect. 😂

We just finished it and absolutely loved it. It seemed to really pick up from episode 3 onwards. Also enjoyed the music. Hope there’s another series.

ethelredonagoodday · 07/10/2025 21:06

We’re just watching it now. Part way though. It was a bit clunky in episode one, but am enjoying it. It’s no peaky blinders, but is good, and am a massive JN fan so mainly started watching because of him.
no expert on Irish accents, but as others have said, majority of the cast are actually Irish so surely they can’t be that bad? As said up thread about TV never getting Irish accents right, I think the same applies for many accents! I’m from Yorkshire and you’d be surprised how many actors think just a generic northern accent will cover all bases.

also, husband and I commented on the mahoosive pecker, and the leprechaun like costumes for the Fenians. But in the main am enjoying it. The modern music with period drama seems to be a thing at most, most recent example I can think of is SAS rogue heroes…

DataColour · 07/10/2025 21:14

SAS rogue heroes also made by Steven Knight, the creator of HoG.

FurForksSake · 07/10/2025 21:17

Oh yes! Rogue heroes was good.

DuncinToffee · 07/10/2025 21:22

They are filming the new series of Rogue Heroes at the moment.

Sourisblanche · 08/10/2025 07:55

After watching Rogue Heroes, I added AC/DC to my jogging playlistGrin

I also bought the book by Ben Macintyre which is very good.

I think that's her actual nose - the actress that plays Anne.

We also thought the same about the literacy. Especially the Fenian girl being able to write so eloquently.

Edited

People in 1860s Ireland were probably more literate than we are today , judging by what I see on the Internet. My granda was born in 1896 in rural Ireland. He knew lots of poetry by heart. Had beautiful handwriting and was numerate also. Despite leaving school at 13.

turkeyboots · 08/10/2025 11:05

Irish history tends to be very maryterish and serious, especially if RTE has a hand in it. So I enjoyed the daftness, loved the music, and thought it was fun and engaging, if at least 50% historically inaccurate.

The first espiode was the worst, it gets better once it settles in.

Lincslady53 · 08/10/2025 16:01

I absolutely loved it. We visited Dublin for the first time this year, so to see some of the historic places we visited depicted was interesting. We live near Liverpool, so spent a lot of time Googling characters and filming locations. Didn't know about the Guinness philanthropy, and interested to discover the trusts are still going. So although it is 99% BS, I learnt a bit more about how Ireland has got to where it is today, as well as enjoying a fun, fast moving programme.

ohgolly72 · 08/10/2025 23:28

Just watched the last episode and feel very cheated. Had to ChatGPT if any family members actually did get assassinated.

beaniebabby · 09/10/2025 20:15

We also thought the same about the literacy

Wasn't literacy important because so many left after the famine & reading & writing made it easier to leave

Outside of the Guinness brewry itself, there were very few factory type jobs, Ireland didn't have anywhere near the same level of industrial development as the UK. Unless you were inheriting the farm, literacy was vital to finding work and emigration.

YourPeppyAmberTraybake · 10/10/2025 14:02

I am absolutely loving it, I’ve watched six episodes so far, I love the sound track.

placemats · 10/10/2025 14:44

There was many a rising in England against the establishment due to lack of funds for famine areas. Despite work houses, education was seen as imperative in young children. They absolutely needed to be literate. The problem in Ireland was that English was the preferred language for education at that time. Some parents were opposed but learned from their children because they were given money.

Ohh I didn't know that, must give it a watch thanks @DataColour

Bologneselove · 10/10/2025 23:03

Neither me nor my hubby really understood what was going on after the first episode. We both found it boring so turned it off. Peaky blinders it isn’t.

ikeepforgetting · 16/10/2025 19:36

I'm so pleased for The Stunning that Brewing Up A Storm is back in the charts! Belter of a song.

weareallqueens · 18/10/2025 23:05

It’s well worth sticking with beyond the first episode, especially if you liked Peaky Blinders. If you’re looking for a) Downton Abbey or b) a documentary about the Guinness family, you’ll be disappointed. It’s glossily shot froth but I loved it.
