15 mins into episode One and i don’t think it’s going to be a Peaky Blinders or Downton Abbey level programme. Maybe it’ll improve but I don’t like the way one minute it’s “serious” drama and the next minute there’s some very out of place modern music playing full blast over an action scene. Hope that calms down.

Anyone else watching?

Arthur’s massive knob! Even my husband exclaimed. When he saw Arthur’s knob, he felt nature had short changed him somewhat, and that it wasn’t fair.

FurForksSake · 03/10/2025 09:18

Isn’t that the part where men start talking about “growers” vs “showers”? 😆

I missed that there was actually a knob on show when I watched it as the subtitles covered it!

I had no idea 🤣

AgualusasL0ver · 03/10/2025 09:32

I still have no idea why they showed us his knob. He stood up and we got his pert bottom and he didn't need to turn around really, unless it was because he was talking. I don't care either way, but it was out of place in a show with not very much explicit sex or body parts.

DataColour · 03/10/2025 09:41

I'm liking it so far, 4 episodes in. Love the music mostly. Hope there's more of Mr. Rafferty to come.

Soozikinzii · 03/10/2025 09:47

We loved it ! It must be us thats unusual judging by everyone elses comments . Loved all the secretive relationships an intrigue. All the sumptuous events in contrast to the poverty . The rousing speeches and spotting places I recognised in Liverpool.

AgualusasL0ver · 03/10/2025 10:06

I'm looking forward to season 2.

We've done Peaky Blinders, waiting patiently for the next series of The Gilded Age, what else is worth a watch? I love a period piece and DH has like both of these but wouldn't come and watch Downton Abbey with me, so something a costume but a little gritty I suppose.

FurForksSake · 03/10/2025 10:18

I’ve tried the guilded age twice and just cannot get on with the speech patterns of the actors. I can’t quite work out why.

The Buccaneers was somehow quite fun on Apple TV, but I love Bridgerton so that might be quite niche.

poldark is a common rewatch and I’m sure there was a good one on prime but I’ll have to remember it.

AgualusasL0ver · 03/10/2025 10:28

Ah yes I have done Poldark, couldnt wait for DH as I was a bit obsessed.

He wouldn't sit through Bridgerton, but I have and love it.

I have been meaning to try The Bucaneers so perhaps that is next.

He is an action man usually so things like Peaky Blinders and House of Guiness appealed to that I think. Not sure why he like The Guilded Age, prob the new money stuff.

AgualusasL0ver · 03/10/2025 10:29

Oh and The Last Kingdom was also a success and Taboo.

Essentially costume drama with some violence I think.

DuncinToffee · 03/10/2025 10:32

Watched 4 episodes and really enjoying it.

It's funny that none of it was filmed in Ireland

AgualusasL0ver · 03/10/2025 10:40

I was thinking that too.

DataColour · 03/10/2025 10:57

I used to work in the building that had the room that the restaurant scenes were filmed in, the one where Edward met the Fenian lady. I've been to many a work dos there, it's a stunning room.

DJSteves · 03/10/2025 11:10

I’ve really enjoyed it. Love the brother’s dynamic. Rafferty striding purposefully through the yard. I did laugh at Byron Hedges when he arrived in New York looking like the Lucky Charms leprechaun

Shetlands · 03/10/2025 16:28

Lots to enjoy eg the costumes, the sets, James Norton...

I'm not Irish but it did seem to me that many of the Irish characters resembled a Disney version.

I did not enjoy being surprised by the waving willy.

Ripper Street? That’s quite old
now though.

God why can’t actors get accents right these days?

Ripper Street is absolutely worth catching up on if you haven't seen it (I envy anyone who is still to watch it!). It's really excellent.

AgualusasL0ver · 03/10/2025 17:30

Ah yes, we have seen Ripper st. Turns out DH is more accommodating of me than i thought he was.

Actors have never managed to get Irish accents right.

CrimsonStoat · 03/10/2025 18:06

I didn't particularly mind the modern music etc., but the riot at the funeral didn't feel like it really happened. I googled, and it didn't. I made it to the end of the episode but felt no urge to keep going.

Also, the daughter and second son were bequeathed property, but that bit was.missed so it came across as if they both got nothing. Also not true.

Ripper Street was great up until when the woman (MyAnna Burning?) went bad. Then it became a bit farcical.

AgualusasL0ver · 03/10/2025 18:21

I am a historian and have trained myself to just enjoy what is there. They said it was inspired by or something didn't they? Someone upthread said it could have been a fictional brewery, true, but people/papers would still make comparisons e.g. 'well, it is obviously based on Guinness, but without saying it and this/that/whatever happened really'.

When Versailles was aired, there was a great 5 min segment at the end where some historians discussed the events and gave it a bit of colour and explained what the available evidence suggests or whether something was artistic licence.

I did go down a Guinness rabbit hole and it was prompted by this which is a good thing. Since it isn't my era or geography I didn't know about the family particularly so for storytelling purposes it didn't really matter whether things were true or not.

whatevenwasthat · 03/10/2025 18:34

I seem to be pretty much alone in this because I really enjoyed it. I thought most of the acting was actually very good!

kind of funny that someone above said the accents were shit, given that most of the cast is Irish. Only Rafferty and Edward are English actors from the main ensemble. (I googled because I did keep thinking Edward sounded very London quite often).

Someone else said a lot of it is made up. There’s a huge banner at the beginning describing itself as a fiction.

Some of the plot was really obvious and odd things were brought up, but then almost forgotten about so not really sure what was going on, like Anne and her pains. Felt like half a storyline. And the devastation at Cloonboo. He dug a grave and….. I guess it’s a thriving village now?

That said, I did enjoy the bulk of it and enjoyed the characters.

the ending was annoying but obviously left open for a second season.

EveningSpread · 03/10/2025 18:39

Haven’t watched it yet but someone told me it was similar to Succession (which was superb).

I don’t hold out much hope though after reading these comments!
