15 mins into episode One and i don’t think it’s going to be a Peaky Blinders or Downton Abbey level programme. Maybe it’ll improve but I don’t like the way one minute it’s “serious” drama and the next minute there’s some very out of place modern music playing full blast over an action scene. Hope that calms down.

Anyone else watching?

Watched the first three episodes tonight and enjoyed it. Struggled with the sound at times but wear hearing aids and thought it was down to that. Had to stop it several times to explain to DH what was happening because he couldn't hear clearly, he too has hearing aids.

I thought James Norton's accent was good. My mother's a Dub but her accent is completely different as she had elocution lessons as a child and went to a private school before moving out of Dublin.

I made it to the end of the series but I did have trouble with the accents and sound. I always use the subtitles nowadays as I am old. I hate this trend for putting modern music into what should be a serious classic serial. I dont think it adds anything. I dont mind so called colour blind casting so long as its not overdone.

I loved it - interesting and thought it moved along at a good pace, liked the soundtrack as well!

just wish there was a proper gossipy book to ready about the family!

I feel like Ellen and Olivia looked so similar.

I feel like Ellen and Olivia looked so similar.

They both have very modern faces.

Calliopespa · 19/10/2025 20:42

I liked it and hope there is a second series.

Emily Hourican has written books about the “Guinness Girls” - 20th century Guinness family. They might be interesting for you @Lynz301
There are a couple of books I think.
Worth a Google.

Also interesting are the Lennox sisters -Aristocrats by Stella Tillyard is a book about their lives.
Absolutely fascinating the lives they led.

Also Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire by Amanda Foreman is a good read, as is the film with Kiera Knightley.

House of Guinness had to adhere to a Netflix audience, i.e., a "wider viewership" as well as adopting its ability to be fluid with what they were able to shoot for time and location within budget according to the cast and crew while not looking at it from a documentary standpoint. The key points of how the family became a force of nature in the brewery business after the sons inherited from their father, being the opposite of each other, living in the time of society and Arthur having a lavender marriage to keep true to history. Although it wasn't required both brothers to run it together in the will, it was an example artistic license to add to the premise of the series. This is why the difference between a series and a documentary so many people fail to grasp.

Could of done without the todger scene. What's up with Ellen's lips? I guess everything was big in 1860s Ireland. And, why does cousin Bryon look like the Notre Dame leprechaun? I don't drink (used to) and the show makes me crave a black and tan.

I quite like the modern music and I'm mainly watching it for James Norton!

This!
Although I heard him talking in his real accent the other day and was most put out! 😆

Ugh Byron is horrendous!
