15 mins into episode One and i don’t think it’s going to be a Peaky Blinders or Downton Abbey level programme. Maybe it’ll improve but I don’t like the way one minute it’s “serious” drama and the next minute there’s some very out of place modern music playing full blast over an action scene. Hope that calms down.

Anyone else watching?

I watched the first 2 epsidoes and enjoyed it.

Not impressed with James Norton but then he was awful as Harold as well imo.

ReceiveIt · 28/09/2025 09:34

I gave up, even James Norton couldn't save that one.

Another gripe I have is the actress that played Ellen has clearly had quite a lot of filler and it looked out of place in a show set over 100 years ago. I'm not against filler, I have it myself, but it gives a very modern facial structure that looks out of place. Or maybe I'm just nit picking 🤔

Didn’t even make it to the end of episode one. The sound seems of a poor quality, some people are mumbling so bad the volume on their lines doesn’t seem loud enough but the other actor in the scene is louder and the background noise/music is also drowning them out. So combining struggling to hear them with difficulty understanding some accents I’d had enough.

Started watching Wayward instead

I thought it was my old tv that was having sound issues. Turned it up to hear the voices then the music was blaring out at high volume.

I'm half way through episode 2 but struggled to keep focussed. Seems to be dragging along.

3kidsaremorethanenough · 28/09/2025 11:42

Im really enjoying it, but I loved Peaky Blinders too, its beautifully shot and i think the music is excellent. It has me wondering what is true, as it does seem to have a very dramatic license. On episode 4 now. James Norton is 😍

AgualusasL0ver · 28/09/2025 15:57

Really enjoying it here. I’ve been down internet worn holes around truth/fiction and learnt a lot.

I think we are 5-6 episodes in so committed now.

I don’t really mind the music, it doesn’t take me out of it but I have struggled with the sound as well.

chattyness · 28/09/2025 16:12

I am halfway through episode 2 and I really like it , I'm watching on my tablet and no not finding it mumbly or the music too loud .

I just read a review of it in an Irish newspaper and apparently a lot of it some of it is made up and never happened.

It does say at the beginning of each it is BASED on truth.
it’s not a documentary

Dexterrolledoffthesofa · 28/09/2025 16:30

I found the first episode quite slow - but it was scene setting, I guess.
I’m now really enjoying it, and think the addition of modern music is really good, but that’s just me. I also loved Peaky Blinders, and can see many similarities.
But that scene where Arthur gets out of the bath?? I didn’t know where to look!! (Actually I did but my DH was sat next to me🤣)

Yes that bath scene requires a pause and a rewind - I don't have a husband or partner.

Sourisblanche · 28/09/2025 17:57

I’m enjoying it, finished episode 2, but think the acting is a bit off at times. I agree with pp that James Norton not great in this or as Harold.

I’ll stick with it though as I love a period drama and quite like the modern music with it.

FurForksSake · 02/10/2025 10:12

Ok, I enjoyed it and have had to rewatch it as I didn’t pay much attention to the first three episodes. Second watching is better than the first. I will definitely hope for a second season and forget certain people’s attempts at accents 😆

luggala1 · 02/10/2025 10:35

Brings in a new generation of viewers who would never have watched Downton Abbey. As for the Authentic purists the series would start in 1759 with the music by the Chieftains,a script imbued with elements of Yeats, Joyce and Wylde. It would be pervaded with symbolism and mythology and most importantly keep the mystique. The bio chemistry that occurs in the tun could be reflected in the political and spiritual context of the time

bilbodog · 02/10/2025 10:49

Weve just watched it all - loved it!

TBF it does say itself it's 'fiction inspired by a true story'.
I haven't tried it yet. Slightly trepidatious – I couldn't watch Peaky Blinders because of everyone's terrible West Midlands accents, and I worry this will be the same. But I do like a historical drama, so I'm going to give it a go.

ikeepforgetting · 02/10/2025 12:24

I’m Irish, it has a very loose relationship with fact and once I stopped being cross about that I ended up loving it! The music was the best bit for me, thought it added energy and edge in the right places. Accents, meh, can’t get too annoyed about that they clearly tried their best! Looking forward to another series

ikeepforgetting · 02/10/2025 12:26

I think too a lot of Irish critics pointed out the leprechaun-esque styling of the Fenians and I get that criticism. The only sore point I ended up with

notacooldad · 02/10/2025 12:31

I suggested it last night but gave up and went to bed leaving dh watching.
I liked the music but thats about all.
There was too much mumbling and I don't like the visual aspect. It was too dark.

I just read a review of it in an Irish newspaper and apparently a lot of it some of it is made up and never happened
To be fair there is a bit of a disclaimer at the start about that but it does make the series pointless and they would have been better making one about a fictional brewery.

chattyness · 02/10/2025 12:35

I'm on the last episode and it's pure entertainment to me, I don't care what's factual and what isn't, I just enjoyed it. No problems with mumbling or sound for me either.

deeahgwitch · 02/10/2025 19:15

Who is in the bath scene ? Haven’t watched yet.

Same as that @chattynesssuch a good entertaining show. I think I'm actually going to rewatch Peaky Blinders now 🤗

FurForksSake · 02/10/2025 19:23

@deeahgwitch Anthony Boyle playing Arthur Guiness.

soundsys · 02/10/2025 20:21

I’m here for the music and the Irish subtitles but why the fuck are the fenians dressed as leprechauns?!

suki1964 · 03/10/2025 05:26

We started it last night , I was half watching but Dh was invested enough to watch episode 2 so I started to take more of an interest End of episode 3 and I’m really enjoying it.

We both loved Peaky Blinders

Taken as an entertainment programme and not historical fact , it is very good.

The fenians dress code has a lot to be desired

MrsLargeEmbodied · 03/10/2025 05:28

i started this eventually
had to have the sound right up - dh not impressed with the music
too tired to watch the whole hour

Untailored · 03/10/2025 06:39

One episode to go. Really enjoyed it, some great, funny dialogue and interesting characters. A bit thin on plot but I can live with that.

And I’ve never seen someone strangled with an eel before.
