A question for knowledgeable people, please (I follow these threads through the year but don't usually post).

Why were they reporting that Emma Raducanu would be British number one again following Queen's/Wimbledon? Katie and Sonay are still ahead of her in WTA rankings.

She did become British number 1 briefly after Queen’s, but to stay there she needed to ‘defend’ her points from Wimbledon 2024 where she reached the 4th round. This was always a long shot given her difficult draw and she predictably lost to Sabalenka in R3. Katie and Sonay weren’t defending any points from last year’s Wimbledon, so the net result was that they gained ranking points and Emma lost. The three of them are very close on points now so no doubt the ranking will move around again in the coming months. It was silly of the media to make so much of it.

bluegreygreen · 14/07/2025 14:25

Thanks @IceandIndigo that makes sense

Raahh · 14/07/2025 15:52

A loss for StanBear and Henry- couldn't find it on any of the channels on the Sky red button- they were only showing the singles, annoyingly.

you never let on your hubby was there yesterday Fizzy

Grin Sometimes you have to keep quiet about these things Jane

I’ve visited a stately home today and when I booked online one of the options for title was ‘lady’ - I was so tempted Grin

Fizzywinegum · 14/07/2025 17:14

I did say his lordship was away Grin

JaneJeffer · 14/07/2025 18:37

🧐Grin

JaneJeffer · 14/07/2025 19:08

Just watching a bit of PHH and Domi. The scenery is gorgeous.

Raahh · 14/07/2025 19:25

Is Gstaad the one where they get the trophy that is a big lump of rock that looks like the alps?
I always worry about them dropping it and breaking a foot.

I think so Raahh Grin

well done Domi, he seems to have a groin injury so he did well

Raahh · 14/07/2025 19:33

Gstaad is also the one that gave Roger a cow for winning it, after he had won Wimbledon.

(In my head, it's a purple Milka chocolate cow.)

He got another one, a few years later.

I like to think he still has them, wandering around his garden.

I was thinking about former British female slam winners today- and why was Virginia Wade never made a Dame? Was it because the the cult of celeb meant being a sir /what ever was just given out willy nilly (and I kind of think that's' the case for some).
She won 3 singles slams (same as Murray) , and a few doubles. She was born here, before moving to South Africa as a child.
She has a CBE , but you know...

it was her 80th birthday the other day, so it made me wonder.

I’ve just seen that Uncle Toni is now Sascha’s coach!

Fizzywinegum · 14/07/2025 22:04

Ok good luck with that Uncle Toni

I think Roger had two cows Raahh - one was called Juliet (I think) - one of them sadly died and he built a cow garage for one of them Grin (something like that anyway!)

I’m not sure about the Virginia Wade thing - they never seem to make much of a fuss about her at Wimbledon but I might have missed something

Fizzywinegum · 14/07/2025 22:07

Oh no bad news on the cows - the other one was called Desiree - sadly also no longer with us (sorry for the bad cow news Sad)

ChessieFL · 15/07/2025 04:36

I think Andy’s knighthood had quite a lot to do with his Olympic medals, playing for his country etc. Not just winning Wimbledon!

Ann Haydon-Jones and Angela Mortimer have also both won three Slams and have CBE/MBE. I suppose if you were going to make Virginia a Dame you would have to make those two Dames as well. Maybe that’s why it hasn’t happened.

Raahh · 15/07/2025 07:26

Tennis wasn't in the Olympics for a very long time, so many players didn't get the chance to play for a medal- whether they would have wanted to or not.

It was just musing really.

I think knighthoods should be like statues, you only get them when you retire. Not sure why!

Fizzy

I have just seen the sad cow news.Sad
R.I.P Desiree and Juliet.

I hope they had monogrammed bedding and lived a good life.

Jane Uncle Toni is a brave man.

I do love this. Nearly as good as a cow.

I wonder if Lego will make her a Centre Court model to go with her RG one?

Seems only fair to post a picture of Roger with Juliette.

RIP Juliette and Desiree - Roger seemed fairly blasé about their demise - I don’t think he’s cut out to be a farmer!

Hopefully Lego will make a little Iga model - that would be cool

IceandIndigo · 15/07/2025 09:38

I had forgotten about the cows! That was very random.

Interesting news about Sascha working with Uncle Toni. He definitely needed to make some changes. I’m not really a fan of his but tennis will be more interesting when other players are able to challenge Jannik and Carlos.

JaneJeffer · 15/07/2025 11:01

Stan The Farmer Man could have given Roger some tips on how to look after his cows!

There’s so many lovely photos from the final. It was such a joyful occasion for both of the players and their families. The Alcaraz family looked just as happy for Jannik as his own family did! You don’t get that too often.

Raahh · 15/07/2025 12:04

Struff has lost- and Arthur Kinderknech is not finding the transition back to clay easy after a decent Wimbledon.

Casper is playing tomorrow- due to play Domi Stricker, which is a bit of a shame, as I like Stricker. (Not that it's a given Casper is fully fit).

Nice to see David Goffin doing well.

Martin Landaluce has fab hair. He's another young one. Think he's 19?
