I've always had a problem with the objectification of men and women with 'strip o grams ' and what not. One of my old bosses had one once and he wasn't that pleased ( this was in the 80s) and I did feel a bit sorry for him.
I thought that was well done to show how times have moved on a bit ( although I appreciate that many do like them and wouldn't be offended at all and it's still a thing , whatever )
I always thought that Stacey looked stunning in her wedding dress. Really pretty.
As did Sonia too!
I'm sure she'll meet a new beau soon ! lol

Harping · 28/12/2024 13:36

Yes I was a bit confused by the stripper but. Was it supposed show Sonia as “stuck up” cos she thought she was better than the sort of people who have strippers? But I thought, I can imagine myself being uncomfortable with that too and it was acceptable to say no to it

@the80sweregreat The young actor who plays Neil (the baby) at 16/17 now, is actually a professional singer now. He was interviewed recently and said this is his chosen path now. He was good wasn't he?! 😃

Oscar Hartland he is. I THINK he is the same boy who has always played Neil (the baby,) and was in the 2008 and 2019 Christmas specials... Smile

Didn't he,appear.on the voice at some point ?

Wonkypictureframe · 28/12/2024 14:16

I think the stripper was just to show how different they all were.

And I don’t think there’s been any great shift in society regarding weddings since 2008. Just that Nessa and Stacey both got married in the local church. Most of the weddings I went to back then were civil and Pam’s original plan for an Essex wedding was a register office.

NCTDN · 28/12/2024 15:01

I know it's all fictional, but if irl smithy and nessa were married, where would they live? Can't see nessa in Essex but NtB just got an apprenticeship with his dad in Essex....

Smithy has his own business so it makes sense for them to live in Essex

I was wondering this! Just can’t see Nessa in Essex! If Smithy finally moved to Barry would Pam and Mick retire there too? 🤔

I think it was to show that they are different people from with different ideas. Not that one is right or wrong.
Personally I wouldn’t want a stripper or the Instagram do.

And yes, I noticed that the earlier weddings were church weddings and the later ones were other venues. As said above I think that shows the change of times. When I was planning my first wedding in the late 90s (I don’t remember when exactly, we didn’t go through with it) it was tricky to find a hotel that did weddings.

BESTAUNTB · 28/12/2024 15:21

Nessa knows loads of people in Essex now. She’ll be fine. And she will have her husband and son. And her MiL, SiL and SiL’s kids. I’ve given this too much thought!

I’m now thinking of the Pam Ferris character accidentally sending a nude to Nessa 😆 Think it was just before the christening.

Really, I don’t think much has changed since 2008 in weddings. Big weddings in hotels/stately homes were in full flow. It’s just that Sonia wants one and Nessa/Stacey didn’t.

dapsnotplimsolls · 28/12/2024 15:33

There are arcades for Nessa to manage in Essex. She could also work as a bouncer at that foam place! I'm trying to imagine how a Rudi/Ness conversation would go ...

I thought it was interesting that both Barry weddings early in the series were church weddings but this one there was a fancy hotel wedding and a low key registry office wedding- another reflection on how much society has changed over 17 years. See also the decline of the night club.

I also thought it was interesting that Sonia was such a pantomime villain but her and her friends had the correct "woke" opinions about not "objectifying men" on the hen do. I know A LOT of people like that nowadays.

hotel weddings were trickier because of licences and where people could legally be married.
In Scotland, I was married in a hotel in 2000 - by a minister. But in England (not sure about the rest of the UK) it wasn't a "thing" to do so yet

the80sweregreat · 28/12/2024 16:43

Loads of arcades in southend ..
Nessa has had lots of jobs. I'm sure she'll find something in Essex !

AngelontopoftheTree · 28/12/2024 16:46

I loved it! I thought it hit just the right side of funny and of emotional - even if parts of it required you to suspend belief (driving a bus through a field to lead you straight to the road to the docks Xmas Confused).
You could really see the fun they had making it, especially in the house party scene (with the pile on) and the very last scene.

I got very teary at Mick's speech and how Smithy was like a 2nd son, esp as it seems Smithy didn't have the most secure home life. Smithy turning to Mick to ask him what he thought (at the 1st wedding) was also a sign that he viewed Mick as a father figure - another tear-jerker for me!

Perfect ending for me 😍

Oh... one thing that I almost vommed at was Dave calling Gwen sugar-tits 😳I was OK with them being a couple (Gwen deserves a bit of fun!) but the fact he used to call Nessa that and also that Gwen is a grandma just made me boke!

The laws about where you could get married in England changed in the very late 90s, I believe.
Previously it was a church or a registry office. After it was a building with a licence but it had to be a building open to the public as I recall. The industry was just getting started when I planned my first wedding in the 90s.

the80sweregreat · 28/12/2024 16:59

Obviously Dave thinks ' sugar tits' is a term of endearment. It's not :(
Maybe Gwen will put a stop to that one in time !!
The bus through a field was far fetched , but probably a James cordon homage to heist / car chase films.

yes, I was just saying it wasn't a "thing" yet in 2000, hence people mainly being married in churches

Illjusthavethebreadsticks · 28/12/2024 17:27

I always thought Bryn was Gwen's brother!

the80sweregreat · 28/12/2024 17:31

I thought that Gwen was Stacey's auntie at the start! Not sure why , but I can imagine that Stacey's late dad wasn't anything like Bryn !

I agree.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 28/12/2024 17:46

@the80sweregreat I think going by the past references Trevor (Stacey's dad) was the total opposite of Bryn, making them all eat pork chops on Christmas day for example. I think even the letter he wrote for Stacey on her wedding day had tones of him being a bully.

the80sweregreat · 28/12/2024 17:50

Good job Bryn is around then if his brother was a bully !

Edited

I must have missed the bullying tone there. I just remember it being very sweet, and wondering if Bryn had actually written it.

TheaBrandt · 28/12/2024 17:53

Every fond reminiscence of the dead brother by Bryn and Gwen he sounds really horrible! Drunken, no presents allowed at Christmas and pork chops for Christmas dinner. Another good comedic device!
