Classic Corrie Thread. Now in September 2004.

Continuing from the last thread when 2003 begins! Doesn't time fly in Classic Corrie? The last thread was started 10 months ago, and we have powered through a year and 8 months in that time (20 months.) Wonder where we will be by the end of this one? (If it does eventually come to an end?) Grin

Karen (McDonald) has been stressing about the death of her mum - and trying to be a better person, Martin and Katie are still together, (though Katie's dad Tommy is unimpressed by it,) Kelly Crabtree has just come in, Cilla abandoned Chesney to go on holiday with Les, Sunita and Dev are together at last, and Maya is about to go on a rampage after appearing to forge Sunita's signature for something.

Also, Sean has just come in and started living with Eileen (still is I think!) Jason and Todd are still in it, and Danny Baldwin and his wife Frankie are in charge of Underworld now, with Daniel's 'Uncle Mike' taking lots more time off. Oh, and Danny's son Jamie has just arrived, followed by Frankie and Danny's son Warren...

Charlie the builder is dating Shelly the barmaid, and Sally has just recently started turning into a snob. Jack (Duckworth) was dressed as Ida Fagg posing as a woman for the bowls team, and Norris, Blanche, and Emily have been playing poker!

Roy and Hayley are still together, Ciaran the handsome Irish barman is trying to start up his own business with Penny King, Steve seems to be warming to his little daughter (baby Amy,) and at the moment, there doesn't seem to be much drama with Gail and Audrey's family, or the Barlows, or the Websters, or with Fred and Ashley. Ashley and Clare are dating, but it's still a bit up in the air.

Hope I haven't missed much out, but that covers most stuff going on right now I think. Let's see how much has changed by the end of this thread. Smile

Danny Baldwin "volunteering" Leannes labour re Mike. Quite realistic

UrsulasHerbBag · 11/02/2025 16:45

I am a few episodes behind, have they even got Mike near a doctor yet?

UrsulasHerbBag · 11/02/2025 19:14

The doctor and his enabler just came into their back garden and started saying “he’s my son” in front of poor little Joshua! Claire should have called the bloody police. I am still 4 episodes behind you lot too. My blood is going to boil isn’t it?

Yes your blood will boil, especially with today’s episode when you watch it and to answer your earlier question, Mike has seen a doctor

Oh yes, people do love to volunteer women to do stuff! Hmm Particularly care.

I remember my husband telling a woman we both knew, that I would look after her son from 7.45am to 9am every day then take him to school/nursery, when her office decided they wanted her to start at 8.00am instead of 9.15am! (She could get him back at 1pm as she was part time - and would have finished work by then.)

I had to take my 2 DD to school for 8.30am as they were in years 2-3, and they started earlier, and the nursery (that this lad went to) didn't open til 9am. So I would have had to have this 4 year old from 7.45am, whilst getting a 6 year old and 7 year old ready for school, doing their lunch boxes, helping them find their clothes/stuff for school, giving them breakfast etc. Then I would have had to drag this boy along to the school, while I take my 2 to school for 8.30am - and then wait around til 9am, because it was a 20 minute round trip (walk) to the school, so it wasn't worth me going back home.

I was working midday to 6pm - 3 days a week one week/4 days a week the next at the time, and DH said 'well you might as well do it, you're not doing anything else. You don't start work til midday!' 😠 I was fucking livid. I said 'when do you think I do all the housework, food shopping, washing, home admin, grunt work etc? I'm not looking after someone else's 4 year old for an hour and a quarter every fucking day.' DH said 'well I've told her now.' I said 'well you can fucking UNTELL her.'

It filtered back to me some weeks later that I 'was very unreasonable' to have said no, when I was at home, and could 'easily have done it.' Hmm DH worked shifts at the time, and could have offered to take look after him and take him at least half the time, but when I mentioned this, he said it would have 'looked weird' for a man to be doing this! Hmm

Of course, childcare (and care in general) is WOMAN'S WORK! 😡

Yes, and he had some tests. Doctor told him (when the results came back) that he has Alzheimer's disease. Mike seemed to struggle to accept it, but she is referring him to a neurologist. He keeps going on about Alma, and thinks he is still married to her, but doesn't recognise Deidre, which is odd, because he knew Deidre for some 15 years before he met Alma. (With Alzheimer's disease, people usually remember lots of stuff from many years ago but don't remember more recent stuff, that's why I am puzzled that he remembers Alma who died just 5 years before, but doesn't seem to know Deidre.)

Also, when Ken said 'Alma has been dead 5 years' to Mike on today's episode, his lips looked like he was saying something else! It was 5 years, so he must have said that, but it looked like the was saying 'fourteen!'

I am catching up sabre. I was a little nonplussed that he didn’t recognise Deirdre too but seemed to remember Alma and oddly have fond memories of Audrey. She wasn’t his greatest fan over his treatment of Alma. Leanne is just horrible and I was so pleased when Frankie told Danny no, the contrast between the two women’s attitudes was very marked.
Ashley is just nuts. Completely nuts. He is going to live in a B&B for ever with his pregnant wife and child? I know thinking isn’t his strong point but surely the word solicitor is one he knows?

UrsulasHerbBag · 11/02/2025 22:58

Also bloody gobsmacked at your husband! Some people just don’t think do they. I hope you drilled it into him just what a bloody idiot he was? I am furious on your behalf even though it was a while ago. You rightly deserve to win any arguments forever with him.

Yeah I wasn't happy @UrsulasHerbBag ! Hmm He didn't volunteer me for anything else after that! I went mad at him. It was a long time ago, and he was more of a thoughtless arse then (sometimes!) He's much better now! 😆

But yeah, as has been said, it's not that rare for women to be 'volunteered' for care, and as much as I dislike Leanne, Danny is out of order, shoving the care of Mike onto her. If any man I was dating had done this - shoved the care of his dad on me, when we had just been dating a few months, I'd tell him to fuck off! I'd say look after him yourself, or pay a nurse! Hmm

I also agree with everyone about Ashley, what a vile arsehole he is being to Clare. And no WAY can they stay on the run! Gotta laugh at how - in TV soaps - people just pack their whole life into 3 suitcases, and leave everything; their home, job, business, friends, commitments, everything...... It would take 7 suitcases just to pack my CDs, vinyl records, DVDs, and books! 😆

He did tell Ken that Deirdre had made the right choice with Ken
I think he probably has another type of dementia that makes his condition more variable, but they are saying alzheimers because it's the most common one which most viewers would have heard of.

Yeah she's so irritating i have met people like her though ,who think,s everybody cares about her and her silly squabbles with Jason and is do full of her own importance just can't see that nobody cares.

UrsulasHerbBag · 13/02/2025 12:43

Oh I am so embarrassed for Sarah. She is a very immature 18 year old. What is Tracy thinking of with Charlie? Surely she could think of something better than the old think I’m pregnant nonsense. Why does she think he would care?

I think it's to msnipulate him into letting g her keep Amy as she's so upset about the "abortion "

UrsulasHerbBag · 13/02/2025 16:48

I think you are dead right but it just seems like a really weak ploy considering Charlie has a swinging brick for a heart.

Tourist29 · 14/02/2025 07:59

Recent returner to classic Corrie and mumsnet. Was thinking what a good actor ‘Jamie’ is and wondered what he was doing now - Rupert Hill is married to the Violet actor and they have a daughter. Not sure if it’s common knowledge but I thought it was rather lovely.

thenightsky · 14/02/2025 19:12

And the Violet actor's surname appears to be Platt IRL

Yes it' made me smile to realise martin " Platt" was played by Sean "Wilson" and Violet " Wilson " was played by Jenny " Platt" 🤣

It’s annoying how they changed her character. When she was with Todd, she was never like this.

thenightsky · 17/02/2025 18:29

I think I missed a vital conversation. I take it Phil got caught our sending the 'Richard' cards? Or he confessed?

I felt like I had missed an episode, although i haven't from what I can see?

HurdyGurdy19 · 19/02/2025 16:47

Just watched today's episodes, and it is just so sad seeing Mike Baldwin reduced to a shadow of his former self. I never liked the character, and I don't think he was a very strong actor, but the writing for this alzheimer's storyline has been so good.

I can't imagine what a pig's ear the writers of modern day Corrie would make of a storyline like that.

I do remember Mike's final scene from when it was first shown, and I think we're getting really close to that now.

This sort of sexist crap really REALLY fucks me off
Jamie saying that Mike can come and live with them Yeah Frankie would be doing most of the grunt work

CorporaINobbyNobbs · 20/02/2025 13:34

Poor Mike! This is a very distressing storyline, I didn’t see it first time round.

he was like King Lear out in the storm in today’s episode!

ImNotThereAmI · 20/02/2025 15:40
