I searched for a thread but didn't find one

New series on Amazon Prime. Based on a game.

Kyle McLaughlin and Walton Goggins the only well known actors (to me anyway). Actually, I recognise a couple of other faces.

Premise is an that 200 years after a nuclear fallout in an alternative 1950's, there are folk who live in vaults underground and then those who live in the wastelands above ground.

Protagonist called Lucy.

I've watched 3 episodes and am enjoying it.

I sat, initially under sufferance, whilst DS watched 2 episodes.
I’ve never played the game or seen much of it, even though DS has it, and I have to say it’s really well done. I enjoyed it so much I was a bit miffed when I got home from work to find DS has spent the day binge watching the whole lot!
Not sure I will ever actually put it on for myself to finish watching though, I always seem to start a series then never sit down to watch them again because something else has caught my eye.

Awrite · 13/04/2024 16:18

Yes, it was dh who wanted to watch it as he's played the game.

Like you, I probably wouldn't watch it on my own. However, as dh I loving it, I'll watch and report back.

Loving it. Cross between Mad Max, Star Wars and, of course, the Last of Us. Did you watch the Last of Us @OP?

Ladyofthepeonies · 13/04/2024 16:24

Watched the first episode and literally thought what is this? but episode 4 now and it’s pretty good. It got easier when I worked out Lucy was in Yellowjacket’s rather than ‘I know her from somewhere’

Awrite · 13/04/2024 17:04

No, I haven't seen The Last of Us. Don't have Apple TV or Sky.

So, ditto Yellowjackets.

Agree though that it's like Mad Max and Star Wars.

It's quite funny too.

I’m sat here watching it with DS who has played the game.

I found episode 1 incomprehensible and long!

We’re just starting episode 2 - tell me it gets better.🙏

Ladyofthepeonies · 13/04/2024 17:45

@BabsMustGo yeah I nearly gave up on 1, but it does get better

grumpypedestrian · 13/04/2024 17:48

I love the games so was worried it would be awful, but it’s amazing. It’s great to see all the factions and I joked with husband saying, if it’s anything like the game Lucy will ignore main plot and get distracted by many side quests!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 13/04/2024 22:16

DH is binge watching it (no idea what episode he is on and don't worry , no Spoilers as I cannot fathom it Grin )

It is jumping from people living in an underground bunker (?) to huge robot type figures , a ghoul , and most unfathomable ...............the very nice background music DOES NOT GO WITH IT

""I don;t want to set the world on fire , I just want to start a flame in your heart "" lovely old song . Does not fit !

Anyway , DH is enjoying it .
As You were

Awrite · 13/04/2024 22:41

Oh, dh told me that what he really loves about it (the game) is the songs. 😂

They are from the 40's and 50's. I think he's hinting that the music might be key to the plot.

Started watching it with dh who loves the game. I am falling asleep during every episode. 🙈🤣 It’s really not for me. I just find it incredibly boring. But dh is enjoying it.

Yes the music is gorgeous but it's like a scene from a horror film when the record ( yes I am old , I remember records Blush ) finishes and the record player arm lifts and puts itself back then the camera pans across to the figure on the floor , bleeding ...........

Maybepossibly22 · 13/04/2024 23:19

Just started watching it - another who has a DH who absolutely loved the games series. I always loved the music when he was playing it so I’m quite looking forward to it.

Rollergirl11 · 14/04/2024 00:13

And yes another one here watching as DH has played the game! 2 episodes in so far and quite enjoying it. Not entirely sure I understand what’s going on but persevering.

TimeandMotion · 14/04/2024 00:26

I think the point of the music is that music got frozen in the 50s when the bomb went off. Nobody has had any time or inclination to make any more so they are all stuck with these old songs on repeat. The jarring is key to the atmosphere.

Yep that’s exactly it.

OnlyLoveCanBreakYourHeart · 14/04/2024 00:55

What is the game? Is it a game or a series called the game?

There is a franchise of console games called Fallout which the series is based on. Same premise as the last of us

Mothership4two · 14/04/2024 07:07

I really enjoyed it once I got my head around what was going on. It's funny in parts too. I am not a gamer but really enjoyed The Last of Us and Halo was quite good so I thought I would try this one too.

Thanks @TimeandMotion . Now I'm going to sound clever when I suggest this to dh. Oh course, he will then claim 'yeah, obviously'.

You've captured that image brilliantly. It evokes something forlorn and violent.

I was wondering if it’s the music that made the games so amazing and successful, it’s definitely a huge part of the style and to make the series with different music would be unforgivable.

Belatedeyebrows · 14/04/2024 09:37

We've just finished it and absolutely loved it!
I have the game but didn't get into it, so I'll have to have another go now!
Loved the acting, music, the sense of danger and adventure.
A bit gory in places- surprised it's rated a 15.

Saucery · 14/04/2024 09:41

DH and DS put it on last night and I got drawn in. Didn’t realise it was a Jonah Nolan thing - I absolutely love anything by the Nolan brothers and it really shows in the production values, script etc.

And she injected herself with a stimpack to heal after she was stabbed.

I love the games so enjoyed episode 1. Happy to watch once a week or so rather than binge. (I know it's all there now)
