I searched for a thread but didn't find one

New series on Amazon Prime. Based on a game.

Kyle McLaughlin and Walton Goggins the only well known actors (to me anyway). Actually, I recognise a couple of other faces.

Premise is an that 200 years after a nuclear fallout in an alternative 1950's, there are folk who live in vaults underground and then those who live in the wastelands above ground.

Protagonist called Lucy.

I've watched 3 episodes and am enjoying it.

DH and I are absolutely loving it! It’s so addictive.

At the moment we have 4 months free and just so happen to be watching Silo at the same tine. They are very similar in lots of ways but I look forward to Fall out much more!

Yes I thought that as well. I really like both of those shows immensely. Different in tone though

OutOfTheHouse · 21/04/2024 11:41

I’ve read the Silo books watched the series. DH has only watched the series. I had to stop myself blurting out spoilers for Silo while watching Fallout.

Rollergirl11 · 21/04/2024 11:47

I missed out that it’s Apple TV that we have for 3 months.

Yes absolutely different in tone. There’s a lot more humour in Fallout and the cinematography is bright and loud whereas Silo is dark and oppressive. Overall definitely prefer Fallout but they are both very good.

Sidge · 21/04/2024 14:04

We finished Fallout last night. Loved it! I have no idea about the story as I never gamed, but DP had some idea. I just watched it as a “stand alone” series without understanding the background, so it was a bit confusing at times.

However I thought it was ace. Can’t wait for series 2.

Theimpossiblegirl · 21/04/2024 14:18

I'm loving it. It's very funny as well as gory. I've not gamed for years but I'm thinking of getting back into it...

TimeandMotion · 22/04/2024 08:38

Can anyone explain why the devices on their wrists are called “Pip Boys”?

Spoiler

spoiler

spoiler.

We have started watching it again with the knowledge we now have.

At the very beginning, Cooper is at birthday party doing a guest appearance. He has his daughter. Given what he now knows and that he is doing something like that for money do we assume that Vaultec dropped him? Do we also assume he separated from his wife? If he knows what Vaultec are planning to do wouldn’t he leave his daughter with his wife knowing that she will be safe, even though he knows he’d never see her again.

Also, when we see the explosion in the city, and the subsequent explosions as he rides away there are no contrails in the sky, no planes over head, we don’t see anything drop.

Yes, I wondered this too! It seemed like at the beginning he was struggling for money hence doing the guest appearance at the party, but he must have really been taken to the cleaners because he was very rich and famous before. You could tell he didn’t know the bomb was going to “drop” that day, but he knew it was coming.

He said at the end he was looking for “his family” not just “his daughter”. Is it possible that he managed to turn Barbara away from Vault-Tec and he took his daughter back to her, but then they got separated?

Or maybe the daughter grew up and had children of her own?

We didn’t see Barbara in the post-apocalyptic world, did we? Was her name on one of the pods in Vault 31?

Pip boy is for Personal Information Processor @TimeandMotion

At the party when he was doing his act one of the men asked another how such a famous person ended up performing at kids parties and he responded "alimony", which suggests he had split up with his wife and was broke.

And boy used maybe influenced by Game Boy perhaps? It’s the “boy” but that really confused me. Maybe a ref to the blond mascot?

I guess personal finances and divorce law are also different in the Fallout universe!

StuffLoriThangs · 22/04/2024 11:28

@TimeandMotion yes the boy is probably like what vaulttec used as part of their branding/trademarking. Because he was known as vault boy….i think.

But it will have something to do with nostalgia of game boy type significance

It is named after vault boy, he is vault-tec's mascot.

ChishiyaBat · 22/04/2024 11:52

In fallout 1&2 there was a picture of a boy on the unit itself too.

I assumed Betty was really Barb. Have I read too much into her behaviour then?

Betty was Barb’s secretary. She showed Lucy’s father in to meet Cooper at the end and he said “Thanks Betty”.

JennyWren87 · 22/04/2024 18:06

Absolutely love Walton Goggins. Just wish they'd let him keep his nose!

HuminaHuminaHumina · 22/04/2024 19:50

@TimeandMotion thank you. I’m going to have to rewatch, I’ve got things all muddled 🤦🏼‍♀️

Saucery · 22/04/2024 20:19

Wow, that was amazing! So glad I stuck around when DH and DS suggested trying it. It had me from about 10 minutes in. So much to think about.

PerspicaciaTick · 21/04/2024 03:06

I really enjoyed the first episode but have now lost interest. It reminded too much if exactly what it is, a game. I felt like I was in an early 80s role-playing computer game where I couldn't get out of the first scene.
You meet a stranger.
The stranger greets you.
What do you do?
Say hi...
Ignore him...
Ask him how he is...
Ask him for directions to the city...
Offer him money...
Offer him food...
Shoot him...

Enough!

I kinda get what you mean, it's all bit convenient they keep bumping into each other etc.

Like, in real life, if you had 360° of direction to go in a vast desert wasteland, what is the likelihood of you even going the "right" way to get to Filly? Let alone happen across the same people multiple times?

seriously I'd end up 150miles in the wrong direction LOL

AmyandPhilipfan · 23/04/2024 09:46

Ooooh I loved it! Never played the games but I didn't think that necessarily mattered. Though I do have some questions:

Who was Steph in pre bomb times?

How are ghouls formed? Is it always with whatever Thaddeus was given? Was that developed on purpose or by accident? Do people turn themselves into ghouls on purpose? And how long do they have before they lose their noses?

Speaking of ghouls - what happened to Lucy's mum? Was she almost killed when the town was blown up but turned into a ghoul to save her by Muldaver? If so, why wasn't she given the stuff to stop her going feral?

What happened in Vault 32? The brother found out it was his mum's code that opened the door. Was it her that used it before she went feral? And why were all the people killed so long before the attack on Vault 33?

When Vault 33 was raided, why did they go through the charade of the wedding? Why didn't they just attack as soon as they got in the vault?

Does it ever rain in the Wasteland? It looked totally dry as if there's a severe drought, but there were also people living out there. How is that possible with no water?

And my final thought, I loved the chemistry between Lucy and Maximus and if they don't end up happily together in the end I will not be happy!

That is all 😊

Mothership4two · 23/04/2024 12:37

I haven't played Fallout either @AmyandPhilipfan or any games. But from what I understood of the TV series Steph was from Vault 31 ie she was in on it as was from the original group who were put in cryostasis (?) and was one of the ones 'thawed out' to join 33 to marry and procreate like Lucy's dad.

There seemed to be a lot of experimentation going on, so somewhere along the line 'ghoul juice' must have been invented. I assumed most of the original survivors on the surface needed something like that to survive the bombings and now it's used to keep people 'alive' but at a cost. I presume the longer you go on the more you look corpselike and bits potentially drop off. Not sure why some go batshit and others don't unless not getting enough GJ turns you that way? I also assume Lucy's mum was very badly injured (basically died) but that stuff kept her going physically (just) but she had flown the coop mentally.

They haven't explained what actually happened to 32 other than it was pretty bad - unless that went over my head They all died two years before the vault was accessed by Moldaver and her crew.

I presume they went through the wedding a) to get into the vault and lower resistance during the celebrations and b) to add to the story (especially Lucy's) and to later flip the audiences' expectations. Think Moldaver enjoyed upsetting Lucy's dad too.

It must rain because there is some water, some seemed quite lush around the dock and a river or lake. I just think after the bombings a lot of plant life was killed creating deserts and it probably got a lot hotter. Makes it look much more like a Western too.

Yes there is definitely chemistry between Lucy and Maximus, just hope he doesn't betray her or not too badly as he is going to be conflicted as he now has more power and is a knight. I'd like to know more about the brotherhood and how that all came about.

There you go, tried to answer as best I could. No doubt a real expert will put my hazy recollections straight! As you can probably tell I thought it was great and can't wait for series 2.

Saucery · 23/04/2024 16:30

There was a real friendship (perhaps more?) between Lucy’s Mum and Moldaver, so I think she wanted Lucy’s Dad to suffer. After all, Vaults 31-33 were filled with the originators of the Vault complexes and their progeny and the beginnings of a viable community in New California Republic had been destroyed by Vault 31ers, who couldn’t bear to be proved wrong that only they could successfully repopulate the surface when they felt the time was right.

Poor Norm, the last thing he said to Lucy was that he wasn’t brave like her, but still he pushed on to discover dangerous secrets!

AmyandPhilipfan · 23/04/2024 17:15

Thanks for your thoughts Mothership 😊

I picked up that Steph was from 31 and so had lived prebomb but I just wondered if we'd met her in the flashbacks like we met Lucy's dad and Hank?

But if we haven't there might be a reason for that and it might all be explained in Season 2.

And they better not make Maximus turn bad!

AmyandPhilipfan · 23/04/2024 17:16

Not Lucy's dad and Hank, I meant and Betty!
