Fallout anyone?

I searched for a thread but didn't find one

New series on Amazon Prime. Based on a game.

Kyle McLaughlin and Walton Goggins the only well known actors (to me anyway). Actually, I recognise a couple of other faces.

Premise is an that 200 years after a nuclear fallout in an alternative 1950's, there are folk who live in vaults underground and then those who live in the wastelands above ground.

Protagonist called Lucy.

I've watched 3 episodes and am enjoying it.

Just like to justify myself to the fallout gamers for saying 76 was my favourite (because I know it's sacrilege)
I love the fallout games and some are way better thought out and stories more compelling.
76 is close to my heart because I started playing it when the wastelanders update came out I ended up playing hours every single day for a solid 2 years. I liked having other players around to wave at and do events with plus sell to and show off my camps. I did eventually get bored but hey ho. 😁

No judement from me, I have never played 76 despite owning a copy, my sons have and they said it was enjoyable. I always have a save of NV and 3 going for when the cravings hit😂, I just redownloaded 4 to replay again too. Maybe i'll give 76 a go.

Lemejustsay · 15/04/2024 12:16

ahh that's cool

If you do try out 76 just bear in mind, they've added lots and lots of new content which is great! but they haven't expanded the map with it! (although some content you travel away for) so some of the original story quests are a bit lost in all the new story quests laid over the top, and what once was a sparsely populated or originally not populated at all land, you literally can't move for bumping into NPCs now.

I might fire up NV to itch my craving

ChishiyaBat · 15/04/2024 12:36

Thanks @Lemejustsay i'll keep that in mind. What is the story like in 76?

medianewbie · 15/04/2024 12:44

I've watched the 1st 3 episodes with Ds (19, ASD: waiting for 3 years for this).
Epi 1 was horribly violent (esp for a '15' rating!) Ds says its more violent than the game itself (at least how he plays)
Ep 2 & 3 better. Will finish series & decide as a whole.

Lemejustsay · 15/04/2024 13:18

@ChishiyaBat
ahh.well.yeah...... there are now lots of main 'stories' 🤔

So the original, was finding out the history and what happened to the population of Appalachia, and the long gone different fractions ect (including what some people feel is out of place a brotherhood of steel) this is done via holo tapes, letters, notes, posters robots. Then trying to fix it. Lots of side stories and quests can be randomly found, some heartwarming some heartbreaking.

Then there is the wastelanders storyline overlaid on top of the original. Its brings people and new factions into play.

Then just to confuse you there is now a brotherhood of steel storyline laid over the top of those stories, but not at all connected to the brotherhood of steel found in the original story.

And there is a new faction storyline with a name of one the old factions from the original story that has also been added, again overlaid making it confusing 🤦‍♀️

all pretty OK stories, but should have extended the map to accommodate them.

The real history detail of Appalachia that has been put into the game is brilliant.

MrsSkylerWhite · 15/04/2024 13:19

Only seen E1.
Well, that took a sudden bloody turn, didn’t it 🤣

I will get around to playing it one day. I do love a good story, plus looting and exploring is my favourite thing to do in games.

cassiatwenty · 15/04/2024 15:23

I will watch it tonight and report back!

Dont Tell Me Fran Healy GIF by Travis

I really like that Lucy has an attitude to sex that goes against her ‘prim and proper’ upbringing. It makes sense once you realise that they are there to breed. And the opposite is true of Max, who you would think would be more sexualised but I think the Brotherhood just don’t allow it.

ChishiyaBat · 15/04/2024 18:47

This is the town of Goodsprings from New Vegas(i'm playing right now) for anyone who hasn't played the games, so you can see how well the show did. The sets were honestly amazing!

Been waiting for it for a long time, I love the games & anything post apoclyptic so it's something I'm waiting for the right moment to just sit down & binge watch in peace when there's nobody else around.

I think that they are like a religious cult. They believe it all and want the world they want, not one created by ‘other people’.

Mothership4two · 18/04/2024 14:18

They obviously didn't/don't care about anyone outside of their little world and they had already tried to destroy surface life (so there was a precedent) so wouldn't have a problem doing it again, but I also think he was being vindictive - if she wasn't going to live with him then he wouldn't let her live anywhere (not unheard of in our world).

cassiatwenty · 18/04/2024 15:03

I just gave it a go and it's not my cup of tea. I don't have a lot of time for myself, so when I finally do get some me time, I prefer not spend it watching depressing rot.

I don't mind watching clever and stylish films that are violent (The Gentlemen, 2019, Guy Ritchie) but gratuitous gore is not my thing. Funny how sex is still incredibly taboo in Aemrican films and series (Lucy has sex fully clothed in her wedding dress?!) but extreme gratuitous gore is somehow normalized? 🙀

thank u next

SlowlyLurking · 18/04/2024 15:04

I loved it. Really enjoyed the games over the years and Ella Purnell is wonderful in Yellowjackets too. Anticipating season 2 even though it'll be a long way out yet.

You might not have liked it but it is far from ‘rot’.

HuminaHuminaHumina · 18/04/2024 18:13

I just watched the last 2 episodes.
LOVED the series.
I might have to go back and watch it again & watch the mini vids of the characters because I am confused about quite a few things. Maybe I’ll get DC to let me play the game to get a real feel for it…or maybe not, video games aren’t really my thing.

question/maybe spoiler

The brotherhood-are they actually good? I’m assuming so if they are against vault-tec, or are they just out for themselves like everyone else? Who funds them?
Moldaver confused me too. Can anyone explain her please?
WTH - Vault 4?! How did that happen?

Thanks to @ChishiyaBat though. I now know what you mean about the gulper and the inhabitants of vault 4.

SPOILER

It took me way longer than it should to twig the link between Barbara and The Ghoul! I really warmed to him in the end. I’m really eager to see if they show more of him being a knight in the next series though, so intriguing.

The brotherhood of steel are technically good, they were the remnants of the original US army, they are all about the preservation of technology and keeping it out of the hands of evil doers like vault-tec. There are different factions of the brotherhood too so maybe we'll see them in the next series.

Ok so Moldaver, this explains everything...

Vault tec are evil sadistic fuckers though, brainwashing, each vault is it's own human experiment, there are some vile vaults in the games.
