I searched for a thread but didn't find one

New series on Amazon Prime. Based on a game.

Kyle McLaughlin and Walton Goggins the only well known actors (to me anyway). Actually, I recognise a couple of other faces.

Premise is an that 200 years after a nuclear fallout in an alternative 1950's, there are folk who live in vaults underground and then those who live in the wastelands above ground.

Protagonist called Lucy.

I've watched 3 episodes and am enjoying it.

I think the point of the music is that music got frozen in the 50s when the bomb went off. Nobody has had any time or inclination to make any more so they are all stuck with these old songs on repeat. The jarring is key to the atmosphere.

Yes.

Everything is frozen from an idealised version of the 50s. What we saw at the start with the party and cowboy man. (Though they had a robotic floating butler called codsworth so clearly not the actual 50s)

Saucery · 14/04/2024 09:51

Isn’t it 2077 initially? Society has developed along slightly different lines so it’s sort of a hi-tech 1950s?

cassiatwenty · 14/04/2024 10:02

Ooooop been meaning to see this

The story in the games is that in the 1940's and 1950's the US government ploughed enormous resources into the research of nuclear power, developed fission and fusion, and as corporate US grew they concentrated on this to the exclusion of almost everything else. They are driving around in nuclear powered cars, even household appliances are nuclear powered, but things like TV and radio technology gets left behind, fashion and culture doesn't really move on, hence why everything still looks "1950's" even though the events that send everyone to the Vaults take place in 2077. The series is set in 2296, with flashbacks to the events in the lead-up to 2077.

Thanks @XDownwiththissortofthingX , that makes so much sense.

Glad others are watching .I'm weirdly invested and binge watching whenever dh is out .

HuminaHuminaHumina · 14/04/2024 14:44

Feeling rotten today so snuggled on the sofa and just watched episode 3.
I have questions. DS responded with ‘watch the mini videos so you know who the characters are and why this happens’ which wasn’t terribly helpful and I don’t want to have to watch more things in order to watch the series.
So, I’d like to ask here if someone could answer

STOP READING NOW if you don’t want a spoiler.

ok, the pink creature in the water that took the head. How/why did it die when it was pretty much eating the man? It just vomited its tongue out and died. What did I miss because I can’t figure out why it just died like that.

cassiatwenty · 14/04/2024 14:48

@XDownwiththissortofthingX That's a really good explanation, cheers Smile

Faircastle · 14/04/2024 14:52

I have no knowledge of the games but I like the post-apocalyptic genre so I'm giving it a try. Currently two episodes in.

It's more violent than the shows I usually enjoy, but the violence is quite stylised (like a comic book) which mitigates this.

I like the way each of the main characters has their own musical theme.

hazelnutlatte · 14/04/2024 14:53

I've watched the first two episodes and it's really good so far. Can someone who has played the game explain what the injections do? Do they fix every medical problem or do they help with the radiation? Is there an explanation of what they are for?
Also got a bit confused as to where it is set - I thought California but they kept talking about 'Filly' which I thought might be what they are now calling Philadelphia?

In the games, the injections (called Stimpacks) cure physical injuries, but not radiation.

just finished watching it all. loved it.
But then I've played the games, so loved all the little references to the different games.

When you play the games the songs are playing on abandoned radios, and yes it is really jarring to the atmosphere you are surrounded by. My favourite game is 76 and when walking the wasteland will have the local radio playing on my pipboy. I was actually singing along to the songs on TV. Grin

I was a bit disappointed we didn't see any super mutants and didn't come across random feral ghouls.

there are plot holes, but I'll forgive them, only because the they got the feel and the atmosphere so right, it made me long to play the games again.

Edited

Sort of relieved re feral ghouls. I don’t generally play games with a darker tone but got hooked by fallout 3. Going through the old metro tunnels full of ghouls though…

Also there is no silicon in the fallout universe, so they never figured out how to make microchips, there were chips, like the water chips in vaults and the platinum chip in NV, but they could never make them micro if you see what I mean.
I love fallout, the games are amazing, so I was dubious about the show, but I loved it. The sets were spot on, the nuka cola, the food items and desk fans littered about(sad about the lack of coffee mugs for Muggy though😂) That Super Duper Mart reminded me of the first one you come across after leaving Megaton in Fallout 3, honestly the sets blew me away. The ghoul was very cool, I love Walton Goggins anyway, but he was really awesome. I hated Maximus in the beginning, but he grew on me by the end. Lucy was a solid choice for the vault dweller, she played her really well, I was rooting for her.
I loved seeing Mr House and the strip of NV at the end too, although that doesn't really make sense in the timeline of the show vs game.
I really hope they make a 2nd season, I got told it's already been commissioned, but I can't find anything official!

Hope you feel better soon.
Ok so the pink creature is a gulper, they are mutated salamanders, but the ones in the tv show have a twist, thanks to vault-tec and the inhabitants of vault 4, they have human fingers instead of teeth and when Maximus was trying to get the squire out, one of them grabbed one of the larger fingers which I assumed was his tongue and pulled it inside out. The Ghoul said that they are slow digestors so that's why there was a lot of intact things including the head.

I thought it looked like it had a gag reflex. That doesn't explain why it just expired though

My dh thought Lucy's feet yanked out it's stomach when she was pulled out.

I thought the gulper was kina cute too, despite the eating and many fingers😂.

Really enjoying it. Love Lucy. My DS played all of the Fallout games and he's totally invested, he says the sets and effects are amazing and really reflecting the game. I love that they've kept the radio soundtrack in too, I remember hearing it while he was playing and really enjoying it.

Whatineed · 14/04/2024 22:58

Pigeonqueen · 14/04/2024 00:32

Yep that’s exactly it.

The bomb actually went off in 2077 if I recall, but the whole game was based of a 50s stylised future.

OutOfTheHouse · 14/04/2024 23:06

We watched the whole thing over three days and then spent most of today talking about it. DH played the games but I was often in the room at the time so I knew the vibe, why the music makes sense, how the ‘universe’ works etc.

I loved it.

It makes more sense if you’ve played the games but it’s not vital.
The Fallout universe kind of got stuck in the 1950s and so the fashions/music/style stayed there even though the technology moved on.

WittiestUsernameEver · 14/04/2024 23:19

We're watching itm no spoilers here.

It's a bit slow and a bit unbelievable considering the wasteland is vast but characters can catch up with others who have had X days headstart, and randomly bump into the person they need wherever they happen to be... and nobody really drinks water out in the desert... But fun none the less.

Galaxyinmypocket · 14/04/2024 23:21

Not played or seen the games, DH has, I couldn't get into it, DH is enjoying it
