Raye Racist

Having never heard of Raye before her BAFTA success last night I decided to listen to some of her music. Was somewhat enjoying it until her lyrics “All the white men CEOs, fuck your privilege
Get your pink chubby hands off my mouth, fuck you think this is?”
I personally feel these are racist lyrics and they are unacceptable.

I agree but people seem to only care if it goes one way.

She's right though 🤷

Beetlewings · 03/03/2024 13:54

She's had a horrendous battle with her ex record company I think, her dad is her manager and is white. Watch the Louis Theroux interview with her, she's fine.

the80sweregreat · 03/03/2024 13:55

I believe she had a really bad experience with a certain record label many years ago and this is her song about what happened to her.
She has since become her own boss ( so I read once ) and she now has her own record label ( so I believe)
I am not condoning the lyrics ( I guess some might find them racist ) I personally found them upsetting as she was so young and this type of thing must go on all the time.

TooBigForMyBoots · 03/03/2024 13:55

No she is not racist. Her lyrics are about what she has experienced in the music industry.

I think the white male CEOs will survive

hoopjumper · 03/03/2024 16:59

Really?

Really?

I'm astonished you think white CEO is racist.
Gammon maybe.
But honestly I just think you should stick to listening to Coldplay x

everythinglooksbetterpaintedblack · 03/03/2024 18:00

She is just saying it as is was

DojaPhat · 03/03/2024 18:04

This is to racism what that single, soaked, and soggy pickle in the middle of a big mac and cheese burger is to health.

HurrahWuff · 03/03/2024 18:42

I'd never heard of her until I watched the Louis Theroux interview but I realise I recognise some of her songs.
It is racist otherwise why mention the colour of anyone, and am surprised at that as she has white family, but that's as far as my opinion goes.
Her music, her lyrics. She can say what she wants, nobody has to buy it if they're offended by it.

This^

FrothyDonkeyMilk · 05/03/2024 06:42

I think in that lyric it's fine. It's clear being white is part of the privilege she is referring to and so it is relevant to the context.

No she is not racist. Her lyrics are about what she has experienced in the music industry.

You're missing the point.

I even feel funny typing "get your big black hands off me" even if I had been abused by said hands.

It's not acceptable and is spreading hate.

Cavewomansue · 05/03/2024 07:55

🙄FFS

closbang · 05/03/2024 09:12

Oh no! Is someone being mean about the rich white men??

DowntonAgain · 05/03/2024 09:17

Racist....lol. Rich white men who rule the industry, so oppressed they are, poor little lambs. Thoughts and prayers. 🙏🏻

Prawncow · 05/03/2024 09:21

No. She’s not racist. The lyrics aren’t racist.

Teddleshon · 05/03/2024 09:25

Oh right, so it’s fine to be racist about people who are rich and powerful.

Prawncow · 05/03/2024 09:30

Racism is prejudice plus power. Stating that she was denied musical freedom by a record company that’s dominated by white men is fact, not racism.

If it was a white or Asian artist who had been denied musical freedom by a record label dominated by black men (these obviously exist) and the artist chose to focus on their skin colour, would that be ok?

Prawncow · 05/03/2024 10:03

You seem to think that mentioning race or skin colour = racism. Like those who say ‘I don’t even register skin colour’. It’s amazing that with all these colourblind people in the world, when you get to a decision making level at just about any company in the U.K. you’ll find it dominated by white men.

You can’t discuss racism without discussing race and skin colour. Labelling someone who’s speaking about their lived experience of racism as racist is ignorant at best and is more commonly the kind of reactionary bullshit used by those on the right to silence POC.

sittingingold · 05/03/2024 10:09

Because it's so common to mention the race/colour of non-white people but not white people as they are considered the default it's just confused your tiny little brain that's all. It's not racist in this case, it's factual.

Teddleshon · 05/03/2024 10:16

Got it
