Having never heard of Raye before her BAFTA success last night I decided to listen to some of her music. Was somewhat enjoying it until her lyrics “All the white men CEOs, fuck your privilege
Get your pink chubby hands off my mouth, fuck you think this is?”
I personally feel these are racist lyrics and they are unacceptable.

She is describing what happened to her. Listen to ice cream man, which is about her assault by one of her producers at the record company. Sadly it's lived experience, and they were white. Unsurprising that so much of music is owned and controlled by white men, I think. Or that she was taken take sexual or financial advantage.

I don't think she's racist. In addition , she is more than half white-her father is white and on the other side she is half Swiss and half Ghanaian. That would make her 75% white.

RoseNy · 05/03/2024 10:33

Surely the CEO lyric is talking about how they were being racist? Their privilege?

TheSandHurtsMyFeelings · 05/03/2024 10:34

Won't somebody think of the powerful rich white mennnnnnn?!

And their pink chubby hands? Basically calling them gammon?

I suggest you read about the reverse racism fallacy OP.

Racism is not just about colour of skin, but a whole systemised oppression of people who are not white. Like the one Raye is describing in her song.

I mean she's just giving her experience of white privileged men how is that racist how can these rich white men who try to silence .women and throw their "weight" about be subject to racism?

FrownedUpon · 05/03/2024 10:48

I was surprised how inarticulate she was when being interviewed. Obviously not the brightest.

ah OK fair enough I see how this thread is going I will hide it now and let you get on with it. I hear Laurence fox is looking for new friends!

After what happened to her I admire her speaking out honestly - no problem there

However I am uncomfortable that she uses the word 'all'
It just feels wrong to ever lump all people of any demographic together

MiltonNorthern · 05/03/2024 10:56

That's not racist. A young black woman has been treated badly by older white men with power and control over her and the fact of them being white and her black is totally relevant.

She's not talking about all white men or even all white men CEOs. She's talking about all the white men CEOs who abused her.

RoseNy · 05/03/2024 10:59

And their pink chubby hands? Basically calling them gammon?

Basically? Have you made this up or does she actually call them gammon?

Is it favourable to refer to white men’s hands as pink and chubby? Yes or no?

The refusal of previous of posters to see that these lyrics are racist (regardless of the background between her and SOME men) just further proves the existence of reverse racism. It’s simply not seen as a problem by many. If I and the many others who have given thanks on my post or posted in support believe them to be racist and/or insulting, they are.

I think in that lyric it's fine. It's clear being white is part of the privilege she is referring to and so it is relevant to the context.

This

When the actual real life racism that occurs every day which does actual harm finally stops (looks in sky for flying little pink snorting animals ...) then maybe I would raise an eyebrow at lyrics like this.

Funny how people only get their knickers in a twist in mentions of colour creating division or spreading hate it tends to occur when a person of colour does it ...

jackstini · 05/03/2024 11:11

@MiltonNorthern - but that's not what she says. How can you guarantee that's what she means?
She might do, but it could be clearer...

Prawncow · 05/03/2024 09:30

Racism is prejudice plus power. Stating that she was denied musical freedom by a record company that’s dominated by white men is fact, not racism.

This. So many people do not know what racism is.

Well my reading comprehension and understanding of wider context helps me decide what I think it means. If you're someone with a chip on your shoulder I guess you might interpret it differently...

I am sure there must be a support group somewhere for white male CEOs....

Quite

I was assaulted by a family friend when I was 11. I vividly remember how disgusting and repulsive his hands felt. Chubby and pink is probably an apt description I'd also use I reckon.

JanetareyouokareyouokJanet · 05/03/2024 11:17

Thank god someone’s standing up for the pink chubby hands.

All this hate and division must be making them feel incredibly unsafe Sad

JanetareyouokareyouokJanet · 05/03/2024 11:18

Support the gammon!

MyLemonBee · 05/03/2024 11:19

I mean… most CEOs are white men though. She doesn’t say she hates all white people, just the CEOs.

This is to racism what that single, soaked, and soggy pickle in the middle of a big mac and cheese burger is to health.

LOL, you're my new favourite
