Is anyone else looking forward to this? The first part of the final season is on Netflix from 16th November (four episodes), and the second part (six episodes) from 14th December.

I thought the previous series was a bit boring so I'm hoping for more drama this time round.

It is very Diana focused. I really enjoyed the events in history focus of earlier seasons. I appreciate Diana's death and the aftermath was an important historical event in itself but perhaps because I remember it so well I'm just not as interested

Well I’ve watched it all.
the first 2 episodes were brilliant
3 sagged a bit.
4 was ‘chilling’ and it was all so avoidable.

Can’t wait for the finial 6 episodes.
there is a really good trailer for Decembers offering - it was the uplift we needed after the end of episode 4.

Excellent production by all involved.

Luddite26 · 16/11/2023 19:25

We were brought up republicans so didn't buy into all the Diana mania
But she was a lamb to the slaughter. Age 19 engaged to a man she hardly spent time with before going down the aisle. A man who was in love with somebody else. Mental Health recipe for disaster.

TheKnittedCharacter · 16/11/2023 19:32

If we could’ve avoided the ludicrous Di and Dodi ghosts, I would rate it very highly.

DonnaDonna0 · 16/11/2023 19:32

Tell you who I think are pretty awful, Charles and Camilla not Diana and now their the king and queen - god help us. 🙈

Purrrrrdy · 16/11/2023 19:42

Just finished it. Apart from the ghost parts, which I skipped - I thought it was good.
Salim Daw was excellent at Mr Al Fayed.

She was no more awful than any member of the royal family. What she was was human and fallible like everyone else. She was also ill with bulimia. Very unfair to just call her awful. The Terence Higgins Trust would certainly disagree with that.

And yet the wives of the men she shagged would agree with it 🤷‍♀️

Yes other members of the RF were awful and that’s why I like The Crown - they show all sides, they don’t give liberties to anyone. Yet when it comes to Diana people act like she was a saint when actually she was an attention seeker, unhinged and didn’t put her children first.

Rinoachicken · 16/11/2023 21:40

I didn’t like that they used actual footage from the funeral - especially because it was footage of William and Harry walking in procession. I thought that was going too far.

Rinoachicken · 16/11/2023 21:42

Imelda Staunton is very good as the queen - when she was giving the address to TV (after she returned to London) for a second I had to look twice and check it wasn’t the actual footage!

Edited

I agree. I can take all the rest as 'fiction' but that was a step too far.

Wolfathedoor · 16/11/2023 22:09

I thought it was really excellent … apart from the ghosts.

EasterMummie · 16/11/2023 22:17

Is this going to be the final series does anyone know? Or do they plan/do people think there will be more to come?

Lottapianos · 16/11/2023 22:24

'Is this going to be the final series does anyone know?'

Yes, this is the final ever series

LambriniBobinIsleworth · 16/11/2023 23:41

Just finished it. I liked it. Alright, it's soapy but I'm here for the soap at this point, it stopped being prestige telly many series ago.

I also didn't think that episode four took anything away from the work that Peter Morgan has already done in The Queen. I felt a bit like these were the scenes seen from a different angle or a different camera... the bits we didn't get to see in that version. For example Charles breaking down over Diana's body in the morgue and Dodi's funeral... both implied or mentioned in The Queen, but neither of them seen. My only objection was of the lack of Roger Allam as Robin Janvrin, because I fucking love Roger Allam.

I didn't even mind ghost Diana and Dodi... I understood them as that they weren't really ghosts but just the conversations in the living characters heads. And I found the "conversation" between "ghost" Dodi and his dad very touching: wounds will only heal with the truth. In fact I found the whole thing with the conversation between Dodi and his dad on the phone in episode three very touching too. Potentially the actor playing Dodi was the best thing in episodes 1-4.

Looking forward to the next batch, next month.

'My only objection was of the lack of Roger Allam as Robin Janvrin, because I fucking love Roger Allam'

Excellent taste 👌

Bennyandthevets · 16/11/2023 23:58

I’m enjoying it & knew I would as despite rating Lucy Mangan as a columnist I never agree with her reviews! She went through a phase of giving everything 5 stars including Sara Pascoe’s comedy series which I thought was pretty woeful. Anyway I digress. I like how they build up to events in the Crown often focusing on characters on the periphery like the guy walking his dog.

Bennyandthevets · 17/11/2023 00:02

I agree that Dodi & Mohammed are excellent. I mostly enjoy the portrayal of Diana although I preferred Emma Corrin. I can’t get behind Dominic West as Charles or Leslie Manville as Margaret (I’m one of the few people that despite liking Leslie Manville can’t help but see her as Leslie Manville rather than the character).

Thedrownedprophet · 17/11/2023 00:31

I really liked it too. The kids were excellent, and Camilla. I loved her awkward dancing at the party.

Jonathan Pryce as Phillip is hard to get behind though.

AussieManque · 17/11/2023 00:59

I'm halfway through episode 3 and it just seems excessive to have 3 episodes focusing on that one summer, her last. Previous series had each episode focused on a distinct period, this feels like it's just overdoing the build up to her death.

Bennyandthevets · 17/11/2023 01:03

I agree about the actors playing William & Harry- I felt so sad for them. The ghost part was a bit silly but I did find the last episode moving.
I don’t think Diana is portrayed as a saint at all. She was a complex woman & didn’t always make the best choices. People related to her because she was human & flawed & demonstrated vulnerability & empathy. The complete opposite to the rest of the royal family. Also she used her profile to raise awareness of some less glamorous causes, she made a huge difference in terms of reducing the stigma of AIDS for example. So I don’t agree that she was pretty awful at all.

Where’s the trailer for part 2? I can’t find it!

Scorchio84 · 17/11/2023 01:19

the trailer came on for me straight after the last episode.. so go to the "episodes & more" option & it should come up for you

Bennyandthevets · 17/11/2023 01:20

Oh I’ll have a look- thanks!

Scorchio84 · 17/11/2023 01:36

oh no bother at all

TammyJones · 17/11/2023 04:16

It just came on automatically after end of episode 4
