Is anyone else looking forward to this? The first part of the final season is on Netflix from 16th November (four episodes), and the second part (six episodes) from 14th December.

I thought the previous series was a bit boring so I'm hoping for more drama this time round.

I am currently on episode 2 and enjoying it so far.

DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy · 17/11/2023 05:31

I'm finding it a tad dull but it works for me as my brain is full to capacity so it's an easy watch. I find DE as Charles a bit irritating with the constant lip biting/gurning thing he does.

BeggyMitchell · 17/11/2023 06:18

Got up this morning ridiculously early to get first couple of eps in before work ! BlushGrin

Extension275 · 17/11/2023 06:37

Luckily had a day off yesterday, watched all 4. I think I was still quite young when Diana died but wow, I cried all through it.
Episodes 1-4 are very Diana heavy but I understand why. Her story has been told now so I'm looking forward to more involvement from the rest of the cast in episodes 5-10. It was a great idea to split the series as Diana was always going to dominate the storyline.

Have to agree about Lesley Manville being miscast as Princess Margaret. As PM died in 2002, I guess she won’t be featured much in this season.

Imelda Staunton is very good as the queen - when she was giving the address to TV (after she returned to London) for a second I had to look twice and check it wasn’t the actual footage!

Yes, my husband looked up and said "Is that the actual queen?"

Stroopwaffels · 17/11/2023 08:13

Watched the first 4 eps in this season yesterday. What a load of twaddle.

I do live the Crown for its glossiness, the production values and the attention to detail. They try so hard to get the costumes bang on and scenes like Diana walking through the minefield and Charles and the boys posing in Scotland are just as everyone remembers them. It's very watchable.

But the plot appears to have got less and less realistic as the seasons have progressed. Maybe because I don't remember the events in the earlier seasons but the late 90s and Diana's death are very clear. All the nonsense about the proposal, and the phone call to Al-Fayed - just awful. And let's not even mention the ghosts....

But I'll probably still watch the last bit.

Stroopwaffels · 17/11/2023 08:20

Also agree that I did not like the real footage of the funeral cut into the drama.

At least they had the decency not to show the crash, and the shot of the empty glasses and the driver saying "put it on my tab" as he was told he was driving indicated they weren't going down the "it was a plot by Prince Philip and MI6" route.

LBFseBrom · 17/11/2023 08:24

I enjoyed it, Dominic West is marvellous as Charles, has the voice, mannerisms and mouth movements off to a T. Apart from the actress being too thin and not as attractive as the real Diana, she didn't do badly at all and especially so in episodes three and four. It was quite harrowing, brought it all back.

The rest of the cast were good too. It's far more difficult to produce something like this when the happenings are still strongly in our memories but we have to allow for some dramatic licence.

TheKnittedCharacter · 17/11/2023 09:37

Yes, Dominic West is brilliant in this.

Angrycat2768 · 17/11/2023 10:33

I'm watching the first episode and finding a bit more emotional than, I thought. It's probably because my boys are 12 and 15 now.

ChristmasIsCome · 17/11/2023 11:05

There were a few scream at the tv moments but overall it was good. Like earlier when Diana and Dodi get into a car and buckle their seatbelts. I watched very carefully and at least they didn’t do that just before the crash. I had the impression though that the reason they didn’t buckle up was due to some sense of being godlike due to their fame.
I know it was Diana heavy but coverage of the royal family at the time was too. They will have the rest of the series to concentrate on everybody else. I thought they were very kind to prince Charles in the made up parts, perhaps because he is now king?
I thought the coverage of Dodi was interesting as I hadn’t given him much thought before. Just imagine if his father hadn’t interfered. He could be happily married with children of his own now.

I think the guilt of this as well as his hand in him calling the driver out from his evening off was partly what made his behave as he did after their deaths.

Mischance · 17/11/2023 11:30

I do not think it painted Diana as a saint. She flirted with someone else's fiancé in full knowledge that he was due to marry in a few weeks - not very saintly!

But I do think that the hint of her as "wise lady" with the advice she was giving to Dodi was hardly accurate!

Stroopwaffels · 17/11/2023 12:04

Was the interfering and setting up by Mohammed Al-Fayed fact though? It's true that he was delighted at the fact his son was linked with Diana. But all the manoeuvring and setting them up and phone calls and so on is imagined. Nobody knows whether Diana saw Dodi as the love of her life, or a casual fling.

JSMill · 17/11/2023 13:27

I enjoyed the first four episodes. I don't know how much Fayed interfered but there's no way I would believe that Diana was considering marrying Dodi at that point. She had not long broken up with the love of her life, Hasnat Khan. I believe the writers got it right there. The actress playing her has probably done the best job I've seen. She captured her facial expressions and way of talking.
Diana and Charles were shown as starting to have an amicable relationship and this is consistent with what a lot of commentators have said. I believe Charles was distraught at the time. He knew she was a wonderful mother and it was a huge loss for her sons.
It is well documented that William had quite an emotional load on his young shoulders and would worry about his mother. I wonder if it true he went missing for 14 hours! The Queen also mentioned that William had gone missing so there must be some truth in it.

LoobyDop · 17/11/2023 13:36

I thought the way they showed the feeding frenzy of the paparazzi was excellent- it really conveyed the suffocating relentlessness of it. I never liked Diana that much in real life, but I felt incredibly sorry for her here. Thought it was very unfair though that they made Charles be the advocate of the public funeral and making the boys walk behind the coffin. It was completely incongruous- whatever you think of him, I don’t think anyone apart from Meghan-speaking-through-Harry has ever accused him of being a cold or unfeeling father.

Also, I know it did kind of happen that way in real life, but how did Anne go from rebellious style icon in Pucci prints to tweed skirts and headscarves?

ChristmasIsCome · 17/11/2023 13:40

I think Anne, like lots of posh people has a town look and a country look. As someone who spends lots of time out in the muddy countryside I know practice clothing is key.

LoobyDop · 17/11/2023 13:46

I think maybe that’s why I noticed it, though- skirts and headscarves, however tweedy, are far from practical. They’re just ugly. Mind you, as the male members of that family spend their time in Balmoral poncing about in kilts, maybe it shouldn’t be a surprise. I thought it was a nice touch that the boys said that their school friends took the piss out of the tartan. Because I bet they did.

I agree. I think they did it really well. The press then turned on the RF to distract attention from themselves. Its funny reading the reviews now where they are all going ' oh thats not true at all blah blah' when they created the feeding frenzy by paying so much money to the paps. I remembered it and remember waking up to her death. I know the phonecall wasn't true between her and the boys but it was so emotional to think thst I bet they would give everything for that version to be true.

I think the portrayal of MOhammed Al Fayed is probably pretty factual. He was desperate to get British citizenship and advance his family’s interests.

LBFseBrom · 17/11/2023 13:56

I agree about Mohammed Al Fayed. He was a wily fox, not unlikeable and that part was well acted. Overall, a very interesting series so far.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 17/11/2023 14:02

First couple of series of this were interesting enough, but it's been going downhill steadily, and the latest effort is just laughably poor. Corny dialogue, complete conjecture, and ridiculous plot mechanisms. Burst out laughing at the "ghost" scenes. Just awful. The 1 star reviews are overly-generous.

I agree. It's nit beyond the realms ofvpossibility that he engineered their meeting and pushed it. After he died, he was thevone who started shouting about the Royals having killed them gecause they were about to get engaged andcthsy Dianazwas pregnant by Dodi. I mean poor man just have been consumed with guilt and grief but he was desperate to get in/ get one over on the Royals

verityswims · 17/11/2023 14:23

I have the last episode still to watch. I agree with reviews that the quality of the last series or two hasn't been great.

I didn't ever read or know much about Diana but if portrayed correctly she did appear to have an unconventional, free spirited charm. Though I may be far from the mark. The actress who plays her is extremely tall though and stoops a lot. I don't think Diana was quite so tall?

Surprised by the slant that Mohammed Al Fayad engineered and encouraged the relationship to that extent (and presumably tipped off the newspapers). I didn't know Dodi was engaged.
