Is anyone else looking forward to this? The first part of the final season is on Netflix from 16th November (four episodes), and the second part (six episodes) from 14th December.

I thought the previous series was a bit boring so I'm hoping for more drama this time round.

But yes I missed the other historical issues of the day being handled. I always thought that was the best but of the crown!

medianewbie · 18/11/2023 22:03

Just finished ep 1-4.
It has its flaws (all already mentioned).
Diana had her flaws but goodness ep 4 brings home how intolerable things were for her re the Press. Terribly sad.

EasternStandard · 18/11/2023 22:11

Just started

Really like this series

Well cast, beautiful visuals

Luddite26 · 19/11/2023 07:10

I agree with @thatsnotmywean
I loved Mohammed Al Fayed's episode in the last season. And he's superb in this.
I always thought Diana's step mum, Raine Spencer was friends with Al Fayed and also helped them get together. Diana had reconciled with her that summer after being awful to her for decades.
My other thought was wow look at her long legs wow.
Ran out of time just started episode 3 but we are loving it.
I think they could have shown Diana's loneliness a bit more and where is Paul Burrell?

Figgygal · 19/11/2023 07:34

Mohammed Fayed's story and the actor have definitely been a strength these last two seasons.

catattacks · 19/11/2023 08:41

Have finished

I didn't realise that Dodi and Di's relationship was so very brief?

I wonder if it's true how she didn't want to be in Paris? Also the proposal and rejection. If this is true then it's even more tragic that she died there

Edited

His was an absolute highlight in a quite boring season. I do wonder whether without Diana the last 6 episodes will be back to being a bit dull. No Diana, ageing Queen, Camilla and Charles. Some deaths. They could have gone into more depth this half and maybe done 5 episodes and 5 episodes. But Im not Peter Morgan, so maybe it will be surprising. Ill watch the first 4 episodes again before the second part. Maybe with the kids, as they were so good.

I think that was a conceit, to explain why Mohammed AF thought they were engaged and she was pregnant. I wonder if he will be in further episodes, because his behaviour after Dodi's death was bizarre!

catattacks · 19/11/2023 09:00

Im glad that Burrell was overlooked entirely in all seasons of The Crown. Ridiculous person

I remember seeing the vulgar shrine in Harrods . I always assumed it was a serious relationship but actually, it couldn't have been. They spent a couple if weeks together. No more

catattacks · 19/11/2023 09:02

I just don't find Dominic West's voice convincing. It's not posh enough. Neither is imelda. Although she did the tv broadcast very well

They were all much posher in the earlier seasons: Claire foy, matt smith, josh o'connor.

StillWantingADog · 19/11/2023 09:03

Watched all four, as others have said odd to have dragged the build up to her death over three episodes when in the past each episode was quite distinct and focussed on different characters and historical events

Enjoyed the early seasons so much more especially Vanessa Kirby as Margaret

there are still good performances though, especially Elizabeth Debicki (the way she speaks is spot on) and Imelda S. I liked the way Charles was portrayed sympathetically after the death.

The biggest issue is though as others have said we mostly all remember this, we don’t really have a view of the Queen and Philip’s relationship at the beginning of her rein. Nor really did anyone at the time- no TV or certainly social media back then! So there was far more artistic licence. Doesn’t necessarily mean it was any more or less accurate.

I think there was an element of truth in that Dodi had bought the Dix Moi Oui ring (although he hadn’t yet given it to her), I remember reading about it at the time. I remember also being in Harrods and seeing the utterly ludicrous shrine to them both Al-Fayed had set up.

But even the late Queen herself sounded "posher" as a young woman compared to later in life!

Perhaps MA-F had to believe theirs was some sort of great love? Otherwise he'd lost his son just for the sake of a 6-week fling and that would've been too overwhelming to cope with.

I don't think he ever got British citizenship in the end. He died only a few months ago, the day before D&D's death anniversary IIRC.

catattacks · 19/11/2023 09:46

She had a very distinctive voice. Very unusual.

Staunton hasn't captured it quite right: neither did coleman

Alex Jennings was fab as Eddie 8 and Prince C in the film The Queen

KillingMeDeftly · 19/11/2023 10:09

Oh yes, CF definitely nailed the voice but the others didn't.

Taytocrisps · 19/11/2023 10:22

I've watched the first three episodes so far and I think it's really good. I didn't think it was dragged out - quite the opposite, in fact. I mean, Diana's death was a huge event that really rocked the foundations of the monarchy. I wonder if there's any truth to the engagement stuff or was it all done for dramatic licence? But then, I would have expected them to show Diana accepting the proposal so as to ramp up the romance/tragedy aspect, but she didn't. The stag scene was ridiculous - were they trying to set the scene for Diana's death? But sure, everyone knows she died. I agree that was unnecessary. Incidentally, I was amused that Princess Anne thought killing a stag might cheer up a teenage boy. But sure, that whole scene was probably pure fiction. Or was it done to highlight the gulf between Diana's world at the time (St. Tropez, the Ritz, luxury yachts etc.) and the austerity* and earthiness experienced by the royal family at Balmoral? And the boys moving between the two worlds.

I was struck by the scene in episode two where Charles and Diana were competing to be portrayed as a good parent (and using the boys as pawns in the process).

Who was the woman Diana was chatting to on the phone in episode 3? Was it her therapist?

Elizabeth Debicki did an incredible job as Princess Diana. I had to remind myself more than once that I was watching an actress.

*In so far as life in a castle surrounded by servants to tend to your every need can be austere.

I'll watch the last episode later.

kenyaswhiterefrigerator · 19/11/2023 10:28

@Taytocrisps apparently it is supposed to be
Susie Orbach her real-life psychotherapist

I seem to recall reading that most of Diana's closest confidants were people she was paying such as her butler and astrologer etc.

She clearly couldn't trust many people

StillWantingADog · 19/11/2023 10:35

@Taytocrisps
mohammed a-f has definitely claimed that the two got engaged a few hours before it happened and that a ring was found.
but we’ll never know- seems unlikely

Mohammed a-f later claimed it was a planned murder/cover-up too so I wouldn’t pay too much attention to what he said!

I googled last night what the inquest said. The cause of the crash was blamed squarely with Henri Paul for driving drunk. But of course there would have been no need for speed or even for the journey had the pair not been hounded.
I found the yo-yo ing between the flat and the ritz in her final hours (which I believe is true) strange. Surely they could have just arranged for food in the flat, which they eventually did.

KillingMeDeftly · 19/11/2023 10:38

It turns out a friend of mine is actually in the final episode, as one of the extras playing guests at C&C's wedding! He said it was filmed in Cambridge rather than Windsor.

I'm signed up to the extra agency which provides extras for The Crown. I don't get asked often though as I am Scotland based and not much filming is done here, they do use an estate near Aviemore as "Balmoral" - old people like me will recognise it from Monarch of the Glen. They used quite a lot of extras up there a couple of summers ago for a ceilidh scene. Problem is, although they pay you to be there, they don't pay travel expenses or accommodation and when you have to be on set for 7am that is an issue.

Also the footage of the "local photographer" whose shop was supposed to be in Aberdeenshire, it was most definitely shot in England, you can tell by the style of the buildings. It was the same in an earlier season when Princess Margaret was supposed to be shopping in Peebles, that was also most definitely not in Scotland. Although for Netflix's main audience in North America they wouldn't spot the difference.

KillingMeDeftly · 19/11/2023 10:49

Here's a list of filming locations for S6. It seems that C&C's church blessing was filmed at York Minster so Cambridge must've stood in for their civil ceremony at Windsor Guidhall.

TheKnittedCharacter · 19/11/2023 11:13

The ring was definitely purchased by Dodi. It was purchased the day before they died and detailed in the inquest. But it was in his apartment, so he hadn’t given it to her. I can’t imagine he intended it as an engagement ring, it just wasn’t expensive enough!

verityswims · 19/11/2023 12:22

How exciting @Stroopwaffels I love the idea of extras work. I imagine it's not easy to get into.

I would agree. It also being from an engagement range muddied the waters, but they had been together for just a few weeks. It seemed so unlikely.
