Is anyone else looking forward to this? The first part of the final season is on Netflix from 16th November (four episodes), and the second part (six episodes) from 14th December.

I thought the previous series was a bit boring so I'm hoping for more drama this time round.

Every time the QM was on screen I spent a few minutes wondering which of the Duchess cousin types she was, before remembering that she was supposed to be the QM. The actress looks less like her than pretty much every other old lady in the country.

She died owing millions. The Queen paid off her debts. Apparently her yearly civil list payment of £643, 000 wasn’t enough for her.

I agree Marcia Warren is all kinds of wrong for the part and I hope she continues to be sidelined in the remaining episodes because I can’t take her seriously as the QM.

Bloody hell what was she spending it on?! She was living rent free and seemed to wear the same clothes all the time.

Angrycat2768 · 30/11/2023 20:57

Wasn't it gambling debts? Horses? Lucky her daughter was Queen or she'd have been at GA!

Mistressofnone · 30/11/2023 23:20

I did enjoy this series. Pretty sure some of the St Tropez street scenes were filmed near the Royal Exchange in London.

The relationship was strange with Di and Dodi. I would like them to have touched on the heart surgeon (and I forgot about Will Carling - thanks PP) . It almost seemed like she was getting the ick from Dodi.

The sense of impending doom when the press intrusion was getting too much. The car scene with the close up of them holding hands and you can see the unfastened seatbelts behind.

It seemed like one line was aimed at Harry, during the scene where the boys walk behind the coffin. He said in recent interviews he was annoyed at people crying for his mother when they'd never met her. It was the William character that delivered the line but Prince Philip responded - 'they're crying for you', which I think was very much the case.

The old Queen Mother was known to be extravagant. It wasn't just gambling, it was in every area of her life. She lived a lifestyle reminiscent of a bygone age.

However, she was known to be extremely generous.

Coutts would not have worried about her overdraft, she had a lot of money and they knew they would recoup from her estate.

I really enjoyed this series, even the ghosts, which I agree were a projection of the anlive characters’ thoughts, and not sure why the critics didn’t like it.

Although I feel a bit sorry for Mohammad Al Fayed and think Dodi was unlikely to have been quite so sweet and innocent as portrayed. But it is fiction so…

I found it really good too, particularly how the capture the craziness of the press and mainstream media. Perhaps being part of that world, who showed more recently how little they have learned in how Meghan and Harry were written about, the TV critics felt rather butt hurt about it. And of course people see and talk to people close to them, or they feel some guilt about, who have died, it can be part of the grief process.

Dubonnet! 😀👍

@Borageandchips must be expensive stuff 🤣

Late to the party but I only just finished watching these episodes (intentionally delayed so there is less time to wait for the rest!) I loved the whole 90s vibe, George Michael tracks in the background and the fashion - it felt so nostalgic. Having lived through the Diana era I really thought they did it justice. It was beautifully written and despite knowing how it would end I was willing her to go straight home or wear her seatbelt. I found it very emotional. The only thing that annoyed me was that I thought MAF and Dodi were really hard done by and unjustly made into villains without us knowing the full story.

I love the intro. It's one of the few programmes where I never press 'skip intro'.

Is it implying that the crown is sort of a ball and chain?

MarkWithaC · 07/12/2023 11:25

I always think the crown seems like the alien in Alien – you just catch terrifying glimpses of it until right near the end. And it's gleaming but dark and quite threatening.

greenacrylicpaint · 07/12/2023 11:28

the music is genius
lovely light melody on top and threatening bass contramelody.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 07/12/2023 12:07

Yes! The music is amazing. It manages to be majestic and menacing all at once.
I always play the intro as well.

1975wasthebest · 08/12/2023 20:48

I’ve just read that Eve Best is in the second batch of episodes, playing Carole Middleton.

Absolutely- how she wins anything is beyond me.

She was miscast in this definitely

Angrycat2768 · 09/12/2023 08:20

I think Olivia Coleman is one of those actors who get votes from people on the judging panel who can't be bothered to watch all the stuff they have to watch to make a decision and just say ' Oh Olivia Colemans on the list' She is great in some things but was completely miscast here I agree

Passepartoute · 09/12/2023 09:51

The heart surgeon featured in the previous series.

She was my least favourite in this role

Great in some other stuff as you say

LBFseBrom · 09/12/2023 19:31

I thought Olivia Coleman was just right, playing the Queen as she was at that time. The Queen had a different manner when younger and when older.

As for Will Carling, that was more a thing on his part than Diana's so much so that his thenwife got fed up with him mooning about her (not the only time that happened), but it didn't turn into an affair.

The heart surgeon, Hasnet Khan, was a true love affair for two years, kept very discreet. They really did love eachother and Diana had hopes for a future with him; however, he was married to his work and couldn't cope with even the idea of press/public interest, so it ended. That was in 'The Crown'. There is also a very good film, 'Diana' starring Naomi Watts I think, which is centred on their relationship and gives more detail. That is well worth watching.

Mistressofnone · 09/12/2023 22:45

@LBFseBrom oh of course they did feature Hasnet Khan in the Crown didn't they! I think I watched the Naomi Watts film last year and got my wires crossed. In the film they show Diana going to the Al Fayed yacht to mend her broken heart straight after.
