Four part documentary on Netflix. I'm not a particularly big fan of football or Beckham but I just watched the first one and really enjoyed all the 90's footage and his love story with Victoria in the early days. Anyone else watching?

I'm on episode 4 as day off today. I'll wait until any watchers have completed them all!

Cryingbutstilltrying · 04/10/2023 16:46

I’ve watched the first part, also not keen on football or Beckham particularly, but I do remember the ‘excitement’ when the relationship was revealed publicly and I enjoyed rewatching that. I can remember my dad (a big football fan) saying how Beckham had just thrown his talent away with the red card at the World Cup. I’m looking forward to seeing the rest of the series and how that was all resolved.

They seem a genuine couple, which I like. The comment about the car and being working class was quite funny, does Victoria really believe her family were working class? Because her parents worked?

I will be back when I’ve watched more. Enjoying it.

It was really endearing to hear David talk about how much he needed Victoria when they were apart and how she gave him confidence. They were both incredibly successful but the downside was long periods away from each other.

I read that his affairs are glossed over on this. I feel sorry for her, feeling like she has to put up with an unfaithful man to keep brand Beckham alive. She's better than that.

ToriesAgainstHumanity · 04/10/2023 17:28

Big utd fan so can't wait to start watching it.
Need to relive the glory days right now.
Quite liked the spice girls but I was slightly too old (and cool) to admit it at the time.

I met him once. I still mention it 20+ years later. Grin

Peachonthebeach · 04/10/2023 17:34

It’s really compelling viewing for me , I love it!
Haven’t reached the affair bit yet but really enjoying the show despite it being something I have little general interest in. Think VB and DB both come across really well. Quite sincere.
As a rule though I like all of these athlete type docs on Netflix, they’re inspiring or something.

WildFlowerBees · 04/10/2023 17:34

I'm on episode 2, not a football fan, not really a fan of David Beckham but the abuse and hatred he received was so unnecessary. I don't know how anyone manages their mental health through that.

poppyseedy · 04/10/2023 17:37

I’m off work ill and have binge watched today - fascinating! And again, not a football fan, but I’m intrigued by them both.

FrenchandSaunders · 04/10/2023 17:38

The Peter Crouch one is worth watching as well.

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 04/10/2023 17:48

Ok my thoughts without giving spoilers hopefully. He comes across natural and nice, but deep down clearly has quite a selfish streak, like most professional sportsmen probably. They want to win i.e. the affair and club choices. The affair was glossed over Beckham style. I think he was more sad deep down how his career at Man Utd came to an end due to pursuing fame and pissing Sir Alex off as a result.

Victoria though whilst it was nice to see the early footage of their relationship watching her was just so jarring! Her voice and accent, everything is 'put on' in comparison to David's natural ease. It was like watching her 'be' Victoria Beckham. The end scenes she was almost robotic. My partner only caught the end of the last episode and mentioned it too.

Good on them though for sticking it out, in the name of their brand or otherwise.

I’ll give this a go. I always fancied DB and remember that match very well. It was so maddening at the time that he did that. Always found her fake. I wish she’d be herself. I think her family are working class done good.

43ontherocksporfavor · 04/10/2023 17:55

I still can’t believing he had affairs. He seems so genuine but what do I know?

StormzyinaTCup · 04/10/2023 17:56

Got the afternoon off so am binge watching, currently on Episode 3 and actually really enjoying it.

poppyseedy · 04/10/2023 18:13

They certainly don’t deny the affair! I can believe it.

giddymonday · 04/10/2023 18:27

yeah, if the affair hadn't happened, they'd have strenuously denied it, wouldn't they? Imagine about 95% of professional footballers have cheated on their wives.
I don't know if I could ever recover from an affair (none of us do unless it's happened to us) but many couples
get over affairs and even end up stronger as a result.

ssd · 04/10/2023 18:46

He must have women flinging themselves at him all the time

Whatareallthesefacecreamsfor · 04/10/2023 21:18

Nearly at the end of episode 2, enjoying it. DB is not what I expected at all, I can’t explain how. Loved hearing about when they got together and how obsessed they were with each other. It was shocking how the nation turned on him, I remember thinking that at the time, I was 19/20 I think…good days in the 90’s

pinkhousesarebest · 04/10/2023 21:55

Just finished episode one and I really liked it. I remember every bit of it first time round and being Irish, was delighed to see England go out of the World Cup.😞. Fast forward 25 years and having a son now that age, I had to practically watch from behind the sofa - what a vile thing to do to a young adult.
Thought they both seemed genuine- he obviously is very at ease before the camera. Looking forward to binging the rest.

Snoken · 04/10/2023 22:00

I watched some of it too and I really like Victoria in this. They both came across like really lovely people and I don’t think she was robotic or putting on an act at all. You can tell that there is a lot of love there.

43ontherocksporfavor · 04/10/2023 22:51

Thanks for the heads up. Just watched ep1 and 2 and loved seeing DB in his prime. He was sooo cute. Brought back my crush . V was daft to tell him she was pregnant the night before that match. She really had no idea about football did she?

EmmaPaella · 04/10/2023 23:11

I thought they both came across really well. The World Cup vitriol was awful and I could see why Glenn Hoddle is on David’s mum’s hit list.

TastyLikeARaindrop · 05/10/2023 08:23

Football fans behave shockingly. Especially England. It's embarrassing.

How DB managed to keep his cool when they were chanting about his wife on the pitch is a lesson to us all. It's never worth rising up to idiots like that. He played brilliantly through it all and came out on top 👏

His parents are lovely people. His dad is an amazing role model and it shines through.

I watched it all last night with my 23 year old son and we both thoroughly enjoyed it.

We’re both Man Utd season ticket holders and I’ve been taking him since he was four but he just missed seeing Beckham play for us (he’s seen him play a few times since when he’s returned to Old Trafford).
It was a real eye opener for him, especially the World Cup controversy. He was aware of it but not how bad it had actually been and was shocked by it all.

I really like them both, David has always come across well but Victoria hasn’t been portrayed very well by the media, who haven’t been especially kind to her in the past I don’t think.

TastyLikeARaindrop · 05/10/2023 09:44

It doesn't matter how rich and famous you are, having a newborn baby is terrifying. This tiny being is handed to you and you have to keep alive.

I can't imagine how awful it was for them with a newborn and living with death threats and kidnap threats. No wonder Victoria said she's blocked a lot of it out.
It was the time of Diana's death also, literally hounded to death by the press.

After going through all that they've both emerged with their heads held high and have a lovely family. Things have obviously been rocky along the way with alleged infidelities but that's no one's business but theirs.

Enjoyed episode 1.
