Four part documentary on Netflix. I'm not a particularly big fan of football or Beckham but I just watched the first one and really enjoyed all the 90's footage and his love story with Victoria in the early days. Anyone else watching?

3 episodes in

I still love and hate Sir Alex at the same time

That early 00's real Madrid team is insane

Damn DB is incredible with those crossings, free kicks, corners (insert Bend it like Beckham pun)

Gary's best man speech 😅

David and Vic wedding pics with the purple and David's regret was very funny

In the WWC Lauren James got a redcard and got some heat for it. I remember someone in the commen section was "if this was a man they wouldn't get crap like this". Kinda amazing that younger people don't know how brutal it was for beckham. Maybe we've improved a bit.

Also the whole shaving his head and how it pissed off the gaffer and caused a stir is just insane.

Also Ronaldo having a last name in the lower third is insane. He's just original Ronaldo

Distracting life changing news though even if welcome. Especially given they weren’t physically together so it’s not like they could cuddle up in bed and talk it all through. It’s bound to have had his head spinning even if he was super excited to become a dad. I can only imagine the stuff running through his head:

When will we tell our parents
When will we tell the press
Will we still live in X house
Will Vic be able to work still when pregnant
Will we get a nanny
Will it be a boy or girl
Wonder what names Vic likes
Should we get married now
I wish she was here
I wish I was there

None of which has any relevance to the biggest game of his career that he was just about to play. All the headspace taken up with that stuff will have undoubtedly meant there wasn’t quite as much space in there for football stuff!

I still don't think it's that big a deal. He's a professional sports man, what happened happened and probably had zero to do with it.
They were young, exicted, and tbh half those questions probably don't even count considering their status.

He deliberately kicked the guy in anger ffs. It was entirely understandable but in no way her fault!

EddieHowesShithousingMags · 10/10/2023 07:30

🤷🏼‍♀️ I just know if my DH had a massive day at work that he needed to be focussed on i wouldn’t tell him any distracting news until it was safely over.

I agree. Different if it was sad news but the thought of becoming a parent would make me play better if anything. (Not that my football skills are in any way passable).

It’s so very ‘England fan’ to blame Victoria Beckham for England losing on penalties that David wasn’t even taking.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 10/10/2023 14:01

I didn't like him trying to justify the affairs by saying how depressed and lonely he was 🙄 yeah right. Felt sorry for Victoria really, not been easy for her over the years and she's had a lot of crap thrown at her from all sides.

I think all the kids look like David accept for Romeo who is identical to Victoria.

Enjoyed the series though, always interesting to see how millionaires live.

EmmaPaella · 10/10/2023 14:58

Yes, he seemed to be saying that if Victoria had moved to Spain (with 12 hours notice!) everything would have been OK…

brindimo · 10/10/2023 18:43

I can't get over him missing her c-section to do a celeb event with Beyoncé.

I think he's so snivelly and obsessed with celebrity.

Exactly. Blame the woman.

I’ve just watched episode 1. I think it’s pretty selfish that she told David about Brooklyn the night before the biggest game of his career (at the time). And I don’t say that as a huge football fan, DH and I were talking about it and we both have pretty mundane jobs but if he had a big work day in the morning and had to do a huge presentation or something or deal with a massive client I would keep any big distracting news to myself as far as possible until it was all done and dusted.

She was what, 23 though? Most of us were not graced with much perspective at that age.

Hels20 · 10/10/2023 22:00

The 1998 red card match England v Argentina was played on 28 June 1998. Brooklyn was born 4 March 1999. Victoria said she was 2 or 3 weeks overdue when she had to have a C Section. She said they hadn’t seen each other for 2 months. So baby conceived early May. Which would mean she was 2 months overdue….I always thought baby was conceived during America tour - hence his name - and after David fled to escape press.

Whatareallthesefacecreamsfor · 10/10/2023 22:02

@Hels20 2 months overdue?!

Hels20 · 10/10/2023 22:06

@Whatareallthesefacecreamsfor - exactly….I mean, I don’t quite believe it because the maths don’t stack up. DB was treated badly by press for petulance - but I think him trying to provide an excuse “Victoria just told me we were going to have a baby” doesn’t quite stack up. Or he wasn’t quite correct when he said he hadn’t seen her for 2 months….

EmmaPaella · 10/10/2023 23:15

Or he wasn’t quite correct when he said he hadn’t seen her for 2 months….

Likely to be this. I can’t see why he would feel the need to make up an excuse 24 years later.

Gloriously · 12/10/2023 00:21

I enjoyed it. V nostalgic - even though I am not a football fan I could appreciate DBs gift and how tied up with Spice Girls / VB their pairing was a huge cultural phenomenon.

I think they were deeply compatible and besotted from the start.

However I think DB was impulsive career wise and didn’t really do his due diligence but often made rash decisions with zero consideration for his family. I can’t believe how often he moved at such short notice and how often there was ‘beef’ with managers etc.

I think watching his physical transformation from average good looking mainstream guy to an absolutely stunningly handsome man in his mid / late twenties took me by surprise.

However I don’t think VB had any ‘girl power’ - I think she tolerated an awful lot and swallowed the whole family emotional load and carried the fall-out from his rash decisions and infidelities.

I thought DB was disingenuous when he talked about VB being hurt by the press .... when it was his repeated sexually incontinent and entitled behaviour that hurt her repeatedly.

I wondered why they (she) chose to do this .... vanity project? Or something rumbling in the background so they are getting ahead of the storm?

I thought she came across as surprisingly modest but maybe a bit emotionally exhausted. Unsurprisingly.

I thought it interesting that his mum and dad were never in the same room, that his sister wasn’t in it - and that VB parents / sister were also notable by their absence.

Exp4 was called ‘What Makes David Run?’ - good question - not sure we know the answer.

I thought their final ‘Islands in the Stream’ dance routine was cringe and try hard.....

sep135 · 12/10/2023 07:24

Victoria said she was 2 or 3 weeks overdue when she had to have a C Section

This doesn't seem that likely either. If they've decided ahead of time you're having a c section, they schedule it to try to avoid you going into labour and it turning into an emergency section.

(Mine were both two weeks before my due date. Fair enough, maybe her baby turned or something changed but I doubt they'd have then said to keep waiting if she was already overdue).

Frankly it's not a big deal either way but I'm not sure why it needed the misdirection. I'm only halfway through but she comes across well. I have a suspicion his bonhomie disappears once they're on their own. Something just feels a bit off.

JSMill · 12/10/2023 08:07

I don't want to criticise VB but I'm skeptical about her not joining David in Madrid. Just before ds2 was due to start school, my dh was offered a job back in England. We were in the Middle East. We were determined to go as a family as I didn't want him to be on his own. He got the job offer in July. I worked hard to look for accommodation and schools. We were in a new house by the first week of September and the boys started the new term in their new school. We didn't have the option of private school either. I'm not at all justifying him cheating but she clearly was reluctant to move for her husband's sake. Even when he was at Man Utd they lived in Hertfordshire, where she grew up. Not exactly convenient for him.

LadyBird1973 · 12/10/2023 09:13

I really liked VB in this - I think she's had a lot to put up with.
Okay, it wasn't great that she told David about the pregnancy just before his big match, but they were so young. I made lots of iffy decisions at that age.
I did feel for DB over the awful press coverage and bullying after the World Cup. I think we've forgotten a bit, just how awful the tabloids were back then and how they could get away with ruining lives.

He struck me as very selfish tbh. And I didn't like his dad at all - I agree with a pp that the father/son relationship would probably be a lot different now, had David not been a success.
I hope VB is happy - living with D seems like hard work - I didn't like the way he dug at her about the car she got driven to school in or her going for a facial! As if he isn't vain AF!

Gloriously · 12/10/2023 12:41

I don’t think her telling him about the pregnancy result after they had been actively trying was a wrong call.

Surely he would have been ecstatic and energised?

I think the reality is he is hyper focused on his football - as that seems to be the only way he was validated (loved?) by his DF.

His DF gave me uncomfortable vibes but it seems similar to the character of the Williams sisters and Agassi parents - harsh and relentless task masters.

I did feel for VB. She has shouldered a lot alone, tolerated his ego, infidelities etc and he’s actually probably an absent parent - despite the super dad image - not sure how ‘present’ he would be even if he was in the room.

Even the ribbing playing football with his son was all his own superior ego.

Has he now moved out to Miami - leaving VB behind to educate Harper in the UK. Maybe that’s their normal. Must be lonely.

IcedPurple · 12/10/2023 16:46

Even when he was at Man Utd they lived in Hertfordshire, where she grew up. Not exactly convenient for him.

Moving to Manchester, away from the London area where the rest of her bandmates, her work and family were based, wouldn't exactly have been convenient for her either.

I'm not at all justifying him cheating but she clearly was reluctant to move for her husband's sake.

And yet she has done just that, several times. Uprooted herself and her family to accommodate his career. A bit more significant than him doing a few long car journeys early in their relationship.

EmmaPaella · 12/10/2023 18:25

David said that playing in front of 75,000 booing fans spurred him on to play better so I really doubt it was the cause of his brief lash out. Simeone had been winding him up - he himself said the trip was imaginary, his fall fake, and that David shouldn’t have been sent off.

hermenmumster · 12/10/2023 20:10

I really admired DB's grit and steeliness- I hadn't really clocked it before. His failures spurred him on even though the decisions were sometimes rash.

I liked VB, she was honest and open and didn't try and hide her failures or mistakes.

He is clearly a very driven , dominant partner and also has OCD. Not an easy marriage despite all their wealth.

I saw genuine mutual love and respect for one another

JSMill · 12/10/2023 20:47

Where do the Beckhams actually live these days? Their Cotswolds farmhouse is gorgeous. I don't think I'd want to be anywhere else.

Gloriously · 12/10/2023 21:02

Don’t they also have the large house in Holland Park? Maybe Harper is being educated in London and Cotswolds is their weekend rural retreat?

Does DB need to be Miami a lot?
