Four part documentary on Netflix. I'm not a particularly big fan of football or Beckham but I just watched the first one and really enjoyed all the 90's footage and his love story with Victoria in the early days. Anyone else watching?

OP posts:

I wouldn’t take him back after that if he did. I can’t believe she would either. All trust gone especially with him flying about here and there to different teams .

Brooklyn is nothing like David!!!

In the last episode when he is crying on the pitch in his last PSG match he is the image of Cruz.

brindimo · 07/10/2023 22:47

I find the Beckham/ferguson dynamic really disturbing.

brindimo · 07/10/2023 22:51

I don't find him very warm at all and those leaked emails definitely cemented my impression of him - egocentric and image obsessed.

Whatareallthesefacecreamsfor · 07/10/2023 23:45

@brindimo In what way?

@brindimo In what way?

The way he was basically under Alex's control from the minute he went up to Manchester as a teenager, made to feel special by being taken under his wing but then not allowed to have a social life, a girlfriend, a honeymoon, a baby, without disapproval from Alex and a boot chucked at his head.

Lampzade · 08/10/2023 08:36

I think that they both came across quite well, but I do think that David is a bit selfish and that Victoria has often had to make a few sacrifices to keep the family together .
Btw, it is obvious that he had an affair which was ‘nicely’ glossed over.

AF encouraged players to have girlfriends and wives so they were settled and therefore played better - but he didn’t like the media circus that went with the brands/modelling and spice girl.

He was old school. He had a temper but the boot was an accident - he kicked at a pile of discarded kit when Beckham swore at him.

luckysonofagun · 09/10/2023 06:43

He's clearly a selfish man who is use to getting what he wants. And he was probably much worse twenty years ago. His dad sounds pushy and probably had a hand in it. Victoria does come across as fake but she always has. They do seem to love each other and also have a shared goal of wanting success . Good on them for staying together and working on their marriage, they have had a unique life which must have been hard to navigate at such a young age.

100% agree.
I don't think any of his children look like him at all.
If they were in a line up with 30 other children, another child would favour him more!
Sounds mean, but I know lots of children like this, my own DC included.

Finished episode 1 and here are random thoughts

It's very polished puff piece on the beckhams but not cringe.

I'm enjoyjng hearing about the football and about the games more than about all the pop culture stuff.

Pro-athletes are incredibly selfish and everyone just has to accept it inorder to e joy their lifestyle. This has been the theme in every sports doc I've watched.

I love/hate Sir Alex

I've always heard about the Argentina red card and based on the stories I've kinda thought that he got the card. Argentina got a free kick, scored, game over. But it was a draw and ebgland lost it on penalties?! A lot less dramatic than I thought. I was talking to my bf (English and football fab, me not English and a football fan) about this and I don't think I've ever seen him so riled up as he was talking about that red card costing the game.

They've gotten really good people to do the talking heads. ManU receptionist was my fave.

MadisonAvenue · 09/10/2023 14:47

ManU receptionist was my fave.

Kath is a legend, she was even mentioned by Scott McTominay in a post match interview on Saturday 😄

I enjoyed it although I did FF some of the footy scenes. Having been myself a trailing spouse, I have to say he seemed really selfish at times. I will say though that he was HAWT in the 90s and I never registered that at the time!

I think Victoria probably doesn’t have it easy living with him. Never mind the affairs etc, I suspect it’s all about him in that house and she is pretty much the biddable wife that none of us ever plan to be. I’m sure they muddle through happily enough but she kind of made me want to give her a hug at times 😫

I know. He was so handsome and well dressed, I never really noticed back in the day. He had real charisma.

Yes, I would have thought the moving around is part and parcel of being married to them. There was an article in the papers recently how Harry Kane's wife is NOT moving to Germany following his move to Munich.

Stressfordays · 09/10/2023 15:49

I thought in the early days, it was Victoria who seemed selfish. Note how it was always David driving 4 hours to spend 10 minutes with her, and putting his career on the line talking all night before matches. It was Victoria who chose to tell him she was pregnant right before a major match. She had no clue about his career and what it entailed. However, the tables turned later down the line and he became incredibly selfish. Luckily, they seem to have overcome their issues and appear happy and settled now. Being in the limelight you're entire relationship must have its toll.

Exactly what I thought. No wonder Alex Ferguson preferred his players to have a nice quiet, supportive GF/wife.

WhyTF did she tell him she was pregnant, the night before that world cup match? 😳- words fail me. Completely emotionally immature with little to no cognisance of the world of professional sport

Lapirogue · 09/10/2023 16:09

I finished it last night, really enjoyed it. They sort of poked fun at the wedding, and the purple outfits (they both looked stunning) but its a pity they didn't show Victorias white Vera Wang wedding gown. She looked amazing wearing it.

This. When you get to that level you have to be selfish. Everyone is not cut out to be a athletes spouse. It is moving within moments notice. Your entire life is based around your spouses schedule. They will never come to family events. Their fitness, food, image etc. Always comes first. I think Zlatan didn't even have time to turn off his TV when he was shipped off. But that's why they pay you fuckton.

My brother was a pro-footballer back in the day in a country where they don't pay you much and the level is maybe slightly less than league 2. There they ask about transfers cause the fees are so damn small. But when you're worth millions, you're just a device that gets sold.

piscofrisco · 09/10/2023 16:40

I really enjoyed it. It was cery nostalgic as I can remember some of the footage and coverage clearly.
I think he celery did have the affair-when he felt a bit adrift away from his pseudo dad Alex Ferguson and from VB for a long while and it all just went to his head. He had a period where he probably just wasn't very nice and that was it. He seemed lovely at the beginning and now. They obviously worked through the blip and that takes effort and guts especially on vb's part and all so in the public eye.

I didn't really like his Dad in it though. He can look back and say he was right to push David so hard and be harsh to him when he was young. But if David hadn't had the career he did, I think their relationship might not be so good in light of the way he gave no quarter when he was a kid.

piscofrisco · 09/10/2023 16:42

I think Romeo (is he the footballing one) looks the spit of David. The rest of them not so much.

She (both of them) were very young. It's not like they were 30 plus. I don't see what the big issue is, it was good news, not bad.

Distracting life changing news though even if welcome. Especially given they weren’t physically together so it’s not like they could cuddle up in bed and talk it all through. It’s bound to have had his head spinning even if he was super excited to become a dad. I can only imagine the stuff running through his head:

When will we tell our parents
When will we tell the press
Will we still live in X house
Will Vic be able to work still when pregnant
Will we get a nanny
Will it be a boy or girl
Wonder what names Vic likes
Should we get married now
I wish she was here
I wish I was there

None of which has any relevance to the biggest game of his career that he was just about to play. All the headspace taken up with that stuff will have undoubtedly meant there wasn’t quite as much space in there for football stuff!

welcometothepartyyy · 09/10/2023 21:41

Agree.

It was a little bit "I'm the world famous band-member and you just do a bit of sport".

Totally the tables turned later on.
