Four part documentary on Netflix. I'm not a particularly big fan of football or Beckham but I just watched the first one and really enjoyed all the 90's footage and his love story with Victoria in the early days. Anyone else watching?

I'm on episode 2 and I'm horrified by the treatment he got on the back on the sending off. I remember the front page of the scum but I hadn't realised quite how awful it was.

It really is terrible. He shouldn’t have done it but it was a mistake, done in anger. It happens.

AbsolutelyFemale · 22/10/2023 00:11

Ah it's such a nostalgic watch. Really enjoying it so far.

Lampzade · 22/10/2023 10:50

The documentary has opened up a can of worms. Rebecca Loos has reacted to the documentary and has not only confirmed that she had a brief affair with David Beckham but implied that he had affairs with other women too

sep135 · 22/10/2023 11:05

Both of which I thought were common knowledge. I don't blame Rebecca Loos for having her say on the documentary, David should probably have been a bit more truthful or left out the affair altogether. Although, in fairness, I can see why he didn't as it would have been a glaring omission.

My sympathy is with Victoria (which I never thought I'd say).

Houseplanter · 22/10/2023 11:25

I thought the Beckhams addressed the alleged affairs totally appropriately.

They could hardly have just ignored it else they'd have been criticised for that. Instead they kept their dignity and didn't mud sling, as they did at the time. They kept in personal then and they did now as much as they could.

IMO Rebecca Loos should keep her mouth shut. She had an affair with a married man and has supposedly made a new life. Crack on with that instead of having another moment in the spotlight.

Agree with this, why shouldn't Rebecca Loos be able to redress this in the press? My sympathy is purely with VB.

People were attacking her on social media.

While I think kiss and tells are disgusting, if what RL says is true about DB sharing their texts with his friends and them all laughing at her, I can totally see why she went to the papers.
And it's the Beckhams who have decided to make a flattering documentary about themselves and this has brought RL back into the limelight - she doesn't owe DB her silence. If what she says is true, he doesn't look like a kind or respectful person. It's bad enough to cheat, but to have so little respect for your wife that you publicly flaunt it and so little respect for the ow that you make her a laughing stock to your mates, says a lot about a person and none of it is good!

VB deserves better.

Houseplanter · 22/10/2023 16:31

They passed no comment about her, didn't even say her name. They mentioned it enough to avoid a glaring omission, and Victoria managed to keep her dignity.

She's mud slinging again imo

But I agree that Victoria is the one that deserves all the respect and sympathy

Inkanta · 22/10/2023 16:36

Just watched RL interview and she's believable. Can understand her speaking up when he did allude to being a victim of the horrible story. She said it made her look like the liar and fair enough her saying so. I actually like the Beckham family - think they've done a good job with the kids. I can see both sides.

Whatareallthesefacecreamsfor · 23/10/2023 00:02

Where is the interview to watch please?

Whatareallthesefacecreamsfor · 23/10/2023 00:03

@Inkanta

Tortugaa · 23/10/2023 13:45

I watched some of these as I’m always interested in how the other half live! What struck me was how they definitely don’t seem to be a couple in love. David’s body language towards her seems very closed off, he seems almost resentful towards her. I don’t think his jokes about her being common etc are that funny they do seem, dare I say it, like micro aggressions.

He seems driven and like he only really cares about his own career and his kids. I guess she’s got a nice lifestyle and lovely kids so can probably look the other way.

RazzleDazz1e · 23/10/2023 13:51

Yes, 100% agree with this. She’s often pictured clinging to him whilst he seems cold and indifferent. Contrast that with pictures he takes with his daughter. Huge difference.

The recent unsavoury rumours about him impregnating his daughter’s teacher are very unsettling.

Whatareallthesefacecreamsfor · 23/10/2023 14:07

It’s strange to see footage of her/them
in the early days, she looks much happier, stronger and more confident. There’s a real sadness and insecurity in her below the surface..I wonder if the affairs did that. I’ve gone right off him tbh

Tortugaa · 23/10/2023 14:18

I think VB would put her kids happiness and also the success of brand Beckham above herself and her own needs.

If he is as cold as he comes across I’d be saying screw the brand, I’ve got enough money, as soon as the kids are old enough, personally. I think she comes across as a nice person and she’s been treated very unfairly over the years by the sexist media.

Bunnycat101 · 27/10/2023 20:04

My take of the interview is they did admit it happened. You could see the hurt in Victoria and thought it was telling she spoke about them being against each other. I also agree she seemed so vibrant in the early footage and quite different in the Spanish period videos.

43ontherocksporfavor · 27/10/2023 21:33

How beautiful was young Becks. I’d forgotten .Drool!

Sheeponacid · 01/11/2023 06:58

I found this a totally fascinating watch, and not what I was expecting at all.
While agreed that he comes across as very selfish and has always put himself first, I don't really know why anyone is surprised by that - no-one gets to be one of the greatest sports stars in history (which he absolutely is) by making compromises and career sacrifices for the sake of their family. And it should come as no surprise how utterly driven and focused on football he is, at the expense of everything else - he would never have been David Beckham without that.

What did surprise me about him, though, is how little ego he had as a player. He put up with so much humiliation, at the expense of the fans in 98/99 and again at Real Madrid when Capello dropped him and wouldn't even let him join training. He just kept turning up and taking it, there were never any tantrums or petulant outbursts and he seemed pleased and grateful to be allowed back into the fold. It was telling what Donovan said about the end of their rift in LA - he was surprised how gracious DB was in accepting his apology.

I think he's a complex person who clearly still has "issues" (wtf is all that grilling about, and his weird wardrobes), but as a sportsman I think he's really admirable and one of a kind. I've also got a huge amount of respect for Victoria for sticking with it, and for all the shit she's had to put up with from the media and the public.

I agree - but they both courted the media and public to build brand Beckham to earn the £££££ and build their status although the paps were intrusive.

However some of the negative press intrusion that impacted VB was directly due to DB own actions - his affairs.

Yes I share your point of view. VB to me looked much more confident and smiley in the early days. Did he knock her confidence I wonder. I expect she puts her kids needs before herself and they've made it work as a family, so good for them, but I think she looks more insecure - not as spontaneous.

Whatareallthesefacecreamsfor · 01/11/2023 13:44

She looks sad to me but was really bolshy and fun back in the day and it looked like she was the one who wore the trousers. She seems very kind but sort of fragile/broken

Gloriously · 01/11/2023 15:52

@Whatareallthesefacecreamsfor I agree with you - but it is understandable if you look at the pattern of their ‘privileged’ lives - him impulsively and repeatedly up and leaving and the family trailing behind. So disruptive and destabilising.

If the repeated affair rumours are true - especially the most recent which involves his child being born to Harper’s teacher (must have been recent) - that would be enough to finish anyone off. Maybe she is biding her time / getting Harper thru school / maybe it works from the outside if he is always abroad working etc.

I don’t think she wanted much - just a simple happy marriage and family - I don’t think she wanted the cash or the fame.

I also think Brooklyn’s early marriage and seemingly trailing after his spouse worries her IDK?

You're right, they did court it and made millions off it - but it was so unbelievably vicious and relentless, it's clear from the programme that they're both damaged by it. They were so, so young too. Victoria in particular looks very vulnerable in a lot of the archive footage (and does seem quite fragile now, but I really think David does too. Maybe I've just let myself be manipulated!).
