Four part documentary on Netflix. I'm not a particularly big fan of football or Beckham but I just watched the first one and really enjoyed all the 90's footage and his love story with Victoria in the early days. Anyone else watching?

OP posts:

Yes - Holland Park for week days, Cotswolds for weekends. Both beautifully done and gorgeous.

VB came across really well - I like her. Think she has had to put up with a lot. Really respect both of them for sticking with marriage and really valuing the family unit. No relationship is smooth and plain sailing and sometimes people Jack it all in and don’t try to get through the other side. I am sure DB is on a pretty tight leash now….

Bunnycat101 · 12/10/2023 22:00

I remember the vitriol directed towards him but it’s quite shocking seeing the footage and just how agressive people were towards him. You can see why domestic violence cases go up during the football- there is just something very aggressive and nasty in the footage. He made a mistake but it was a game of football. Also interesting it seemed to be Ferguson who picked him back up and Hoddle that stirred it up.

LadyBird1973 · 12/10/2023 22:59

I think Hoddle was pissed that Beckham had travelled to see Victoria before the tournament, when Hoddle had told him not to go. So when Beckham got sent off, he wasn't in the mood to protect him.
But he was only 23 and the vitriol from the press and public was so ott

LoobyDop · 13/10/2023 11:57

I was surprised by how much I liked DB. And I thought the relationship between them was very genuine, I hope I don’t just have terrible judgment.

LoobyDop · 13/10/2023 11:58

To be fair, as a Liverpool fan I was quite surprised how much I liked most of the players featured. Not Scholes though, that’s a step too far.

What a life! I don't begrudge them. They earned it all by themselves.

How can anyone say DB values the family unit when he has had multiple affairs, seen his wife in tatters emotionally from his sexually incontinent behaviours and carry’s on doing it?

He sticks with the marriage as he gets to have his cake and eat it - and from a brand and financial perspective it’s lucrative for him / them to stay married.

Maybe she is squeezing the pips out of it and has an exit strategy for when Harper leaves home?

Or maybe she is resigned to it?

I think I recall a very early in their relationship ‘kiss and tell’ - which was supposedly a ‘snog’ and VB responded to press that ‘it was was not a sending off offence’ ?

DB seems to be all about DB. He 'values his family' so long as they make him look good and don't get in his way. Nearly every time he mentioned Victoria, it was all about him and how she made him feel. I suspect a lot of highly successful men, especially athletes, are similar. Other people, especially women, are basically there to cater to their needs.

As for VB, she's profitted massively from this marriage. She's not much of a singer so if she weren't part of 'Brand Beckham' she'd probably have sunk to C list status like the other Spice Girls. Of course when they first met she was the bigger star but her post Spice Girls career was basically being Queen WAG. Marriage to David kept her in the A list and she intends to stay there.

I think that’s very unfair and completely ignores how successful her fashion business has been- that is nothing to do with her marriage. There have been several periods when she has been the more successful of them.

brindimo · 14/10/2023 00:12

They both boost eachother up, neither would be as famous without the other.

I thought it was losing millions and propped up by his money? I’m sure she puts up with a lot but there will be benefits to staying re status and brand- she came across as being quite pragmatic.

Has her fashion business been successful? I thought it was losing money massively?

Also, given that nobody seriously believes she actually designs the clothes, it's really a case of her putting her name to the line. And yes, a fashion line by Victoria Beckham, part of the world famous Brand Beckham, is going to be more high profile than a line by Victoria Adams who used to be Posh Spice.

Of course David also profits from being part of a 'power couple' and having the "family man" image which some here seem to buy. So I'm not suggesting it's one sided. "Brand Beckham" keeps him in the news and the millions 10 years after hanging up his boots. But given that Victoria is not known to cheat and seems happy to cater to him, there's no downside to the marriage for David. I guess what I'm saying is that I can understand why she stays despite his well known cheating. There are obvious pragmatic benefits for her in remaining part of 'Brand Beckham' especially as they've now recruited their kids.

LadyBird1973 · 14/10/2023 09:09

I think she's made the best of it because she really seems to love him. Why shouldn't she benefit from 'brand Beckham' - he certainly has. Part of his media attraction and advertising revenue stream initially came in part from his union with her.

I think being with him has denied her the opportunity to marry someone who didn't cheat and was easier to live with.

I'd like to have known her parent perspective on all this. They might have a less flattering take on DB.

Whatareallthesefacecreamsfor · 14/10/2023 09:15

Yes, it was interesting how her side of the family weren’t in it at all

Thmssngvwlsrnd · 14/10/2023 09:25

"I'd like to have known her parent perspective on all this. They might have a less flattering take on DB"

Exactly, that's why they weren't in it. The whole thing was supposed to leave us thinking how great DB is.

Gloriously · 14/10/2023 09:38

I noted up thread that their absence spoke volumes.

I also think that as a mother she may be questioning her choices and the impact on her DCs especially Brooklyn - he always looks like a directionless lost soul to me who’s sole purpose seems to be placating and trailing around after his emotionally complicated wife .... wonder where he learnt relationship template .

Hels20 · 14/10/2023 10:43

I think her parents NOT being on it was correct because 90% of the series was about him and football. There really wasn’t much else. I loved all the anecdotes from all the other footballers - came across that he really did love the game and really did love his teams. The focus on this programme wasn’t really about him as a person but him as a footballer and what made him so great (absolute dedication, huge drive, great supportive teams and a Dad that worked him hard from an early age). It wasn’t really about his as a media star.

Exactly this, I would've loved to have heard about VBs rise in the fashion world and her make up brand but it wasn't so much about her.

I really enjoyed it but it was a total puff piece. He only took responsibility for minor stuff to look human but there was an undercurrent of blaming others or finding excuses. There was a whole stubborn, driven, conscientious bloke who triumphs in the face of adversity schtick. VB, who I like, was all about the family and the wife role.
I figure it's for the US market to sell him and her. Don't know why- maybe the whole Miami/ football league thing is about to get better and he needs a bigger profile for non soccer people. All his weird OCD would be v hard to live with. I really disliked him in a documentary years ago where he appeared to be shit to her and q controlling. This was an improvement because it was so managed but couldn't q warm to him.

LoobyDop · 14/10/2023 23:50

Re VB’s business and its success or lack of- I guess it depends how you define it. It’s not uncommon for couture houses to be in the red. They tend to make their money out of diffusion lines, makeup, fragrance and accessories. But she’s had lots of critical acclaim, she’s highly respected, and her look has filtered down to the high street pretty successfully. I think those things probably count for more than commercial success in fashion.

Dotcheck · 15/10/2023 00:17

I can’t believe that so many people are slagging off vb for telling him she was pregnant. He cheated, was selfish as fuck and so much of the focus is on her???

I remember seeing a documentary as well where I though he acted pretty awful to her. I think there was a scene where she was joking with him about his ongoing new trainer collection. He got really narky with her.
Also in the current documentary they didn't really discuss the whole David wanting to get a knighthood and in turn slagging off Katherine Jenkins incident.
This was a major blow to his image.

LadyBird1973 · 15/10/2023 11:39

If Anna Wintour was willing to be part of this documentary and clearly rated VB, she must be doing something right. I think her money making must be in the make up side of things - those eye pencils she makes, look amazing.

43ontherocksporfavor · 15/10/2023 12:46

How much?

gentlesea · 15/10/2023 14:52

I'm glad there are people here on this thread who are critical of the relationship shown in the doc. I found it disturbing how he kept trying to put Victoria in her place especially when she said she was off to work and he made her admit she was off for a facial. And this is what he's like when he's on camera.

To me he seemed really dismissive of her. She is obviously very much in love with him/supportive of him. She's also very insecure and he seems to have chipped away at her self-esteem over the years so he can get away with doing whatever he wants. I'm gobsmacked that everyone online keeps talking about how sweet and loved up they are together when he admits he purposely missed his kid's birth to go to a photoshoot with JLo and Beyonce!!
