Kevin definitely splashed the cash on taxis in preference to asking for help. He kept doing it even when Claudia had made it clear she didn't like him doing it and her body language spoke volumes.

Kevin (to camera): Claudia didn't want us to spend money on another taxi, but she's forgiven me now.
Claudia's body language: I HAVE NOT FORGIVEN HIM NOW.
