I've started a new thread already in case I forget to do it. Might not be needed but I think there's only about 50 posts left on the old thread. Shall we say we'll start posting on this one from tomorrow (Friday 5th) ?

I would love it if they did an extra show alongside the main one that showed what they got up to in the 48 hours they get at each checkpoint or whatever it is.

Funny how Mobeen and Zainab knew they were in front of Monique and Ladi but M & L didn't know they were last.

They knew because they were on the ferry with them and managed to cadge a lift from someone who had driven onto it early so he could be right at the front and get off first, so anyone M&L travelled with would have been behind them.

AWhaleSwamBy · 13/05/2023 17:58

C and T are 48 and 49. Crikey I thought they were older.

Catspyjamas17 · 15/05/2023 16:05

They are entitled to see themselves as older, it seems realistic as everyone thought they were and it isn't intended as a comment on anyone else. People vary enormously in ageing - there was a man on First Dates the other day who was 29 and I'd have put him in his 40s.

CodeBlue12 · 15/05/2023 16:28

It's more that a couple of the men were old than c and t but didn't feel the need to go on about it. As if the women needed to qualify how well they thought they were doing with "and look how old we are! Doing this! Crazy!"

LindorDoubleChoc · 15/05/2023 18:51

Yes, I didn't see Ladi and Kevin saying there were old or older. Under 50 is not old. Hell, from where I stand, under 70 is not old.

Yeah, but middle aged women are invisible in a way that men aren't.

LindorDoubleChoc · 15/05/2023 19:06

Yeah but the race wasn't really a race at all so they didn't need to play on it. No one even cared who won in the end!

And as two harmless-looking middle aged white women they were probably going to score better on getting car rides (which is what it all hinged on, let's be honest) than Ladi & Monique and Zainib and her husband. They had white privilege for sure.

Late to the game but I loved this show. Started off wanting Cathy and Tricia to win but then fell in love with Zainib and Mobeen. They have a really interesting relationship. Wasn't too keen on the white father and daughter (sorry, can't remember names). And now looking up trips to Canada :)

Yes, and Monique brought that up, quite explicitly.

Mumdiva99 · 16/05/2023 07:46

I loved this series....although found it a slow start. I cried at the end. I especially loved that they all felt like winners in their own way and I agreed with them.
I want to be on Race Around Australia. (But need to wait a couple of years for my eldest to join me.)

Catspyjamas17 · 16/05/2023 08:48

Cathie and Tricia may have "white privilege" but they also had disabilities so I don't see them as particularly advantaged.

slamfightbrightlight · 16/05/2023 10:25

I think in a series like this one that relied so heavily on the kindness of strangers, it probably did give them an edge. Had it been series 1 or 2 I’d have said Cathie and Tricia would have been at a severe disadvantage because there was so much public transport and extremely busy places to navigate.

It definitely felt like they got car rides and lifts far easier than any of the other couples. There was an episode where Ladi commented on how challenging it was to get lifts from petrol stations. They also got a lot of taxis.

SoupDragon · 16/05/2023 11:49

I don't think Zainib and Mobeen struggled much. They seemed to get people to go above and beyond in order to help them.

If the end of the race had been between two or more pairs, Cathie and Trish wouldn't have won because Trish's 10% vision meant they couldn't run as fast.

Didn't her vision slow them down like that in at least one of the legs?

Kaftanesque · 16/05/2023 14:02

Tbh I thought they all got a mix of rejections and lifts and didn't see an imbalance. There were times T and C were holding up signs and getting nowhere.Maybe me.

Paloma66 · 17/05/2023 07:10

I thought Zainib and Mobeen seemed to find it easiest to get lifts. I guess it's all in the editing and what as individuals we observe.

But did they?

If a camera crew is on you, I'd probably feel more confident saying sorry can't give you a lift to 2 middle aged white ladies. If I said it to a non white couple, I'd be concerned that I'd be appearing on tv as an example of how Canada etc is racist. I may go out of my way to give them a lift even if not going that way.

Whereas the 2 ladies I'd not have that concern. I could just say sorry with no consequences.

( of course some people may have refused lifts to non white people out of principle , I am sure that also happens)

I think the subtle difference is that probably the only reason they didn't get a lift is because the person wasn't going their way. I wonder how many rejections they didn't show for Monique and Ladi. Given that they actually brought the problem up on screen, I assume it was a lot.

awaynboilyurheid · 19/05/2023 09:57

So pleased for Cathie and Trish they deserved the win, they worked hard and planned well apart from day one when they got lost in the park!
It was lovely to see how genuinely pleased Mobeen and Zaineb were for them.
Hearing how poorly Trish ‘s husband is doing makes me delighted they won, hope her eyesight continues to remain stable too, we just kept shouting dump your bags at the tv as they struggled up the last steps but like the sensible responsible ladies they are they kept them till a few steps to go!

tourdefrance · 20/05/2023 11:39

I've started re-watching series 2 ( rewatched series 1 before series 3 started).
Interestingly they do the interviews with the individuals rather than as pairs.

ValancyRedfern · 21/05/2023 10:43

My impression was that Kevin and Claudia had the hardest time getting lifts. I suspect this was because they were quite spike characters and people didn't warm to them. Obviously editing can cover a multitude of sins, but the other 3 pairs seemed to have reasonably equal success/failure when it came to getting lifts. All pairs spent long hours at different petrol stations. Ladi and Mobeen both had excellent people skills which I think really helped them. C and T had someone promise a lift who then never showed, so I don't see any evidence of them finding it easy every time to get lifts.

tourdefrance · 21/05/2023 11:35

Kevin and Claudia opted for the taxi option a lot quicker than the others. They seemed much more reluctant to ask for help preferring to pay for it.?

mysparkleismissing · 21/05/2023 13:24

Loved this show. I need to watch series 1 and 2 now!
I wanted the Scottish couple to.win
