Race Across The World - Series 3

This starts Wednesday week on BBC1 (22 March).

Anyone want to join me on a thread about it? I saw some episodes of the previous two series but didn't watch them all and am kicking myself about it now because it really is such an interesting and beautifully shot reality series.

So am going to watch the whole of the next one - this time in Canada!

Love that there were so few seats on a bus but the camera crew always get on

I had a nice time imagining what the production team might be doing behind the scenes, and whether some folk were planted...

afterdropshock · 04/05/2023 06:07

When Z+M got the last seats the film crew were behind them on the road and Zainib filmed selfie style on the bus.

PuppyMonkey · 04/05/2023 08:40

Yes a couple of things this episode didn’t quite ring true. The kindly cannabis woman showing up and approaching K &C to offer them a lift, food, accommodation, drugs, whatever they needed Grin - looked a smidge set up to me.

At least when these weirdly overgenerous offers have come before, the couples have approached the people themselves or found the people through the work they've done.

Didn't make much difference in the end tbf - anyone else going up miss K&C? They’ve made this series more interesting at least.

BeginningToLookALotLike · 04/05/2023 08:45

In the bar where Ladi and Monique were working a customer gave them some strawberries. I thought that was spontaneous and a kind gesture.

PuppyMonkey · 04/05/2023 08:47

Ladi’s tearful reaction to the strawberries looked totally genuine I agree.

SoupDragon · 04/05/2023 09:00

The Drugs Woman knew they were in a competition so I assumed they had been chatting around town/begging for help and News had got around.

Halsall · 04/05/2023 09:08

I see from Monique's Instagram that she got engaged a couple of weeks ago. Prior to that virtually all her posts were of her on beaches in exotic locations, she seems to spend her life travelling to far-flung destinations (or tries very hard to give that impression).

Kaftanesque · 04/05/2023 09:10

I think Amber from the cannabis shop needed to do something to help someone for her own reasons. She was very emotional, excitable - those hands off the wheel made me tense !She obviously had a lot of insecurities from her own family history .

N4ish · 04/05/2023 09:54

I couldn't watch when Amber was driving! Her car seemed to be veering all over the place.

BishopRock · 04/05/2023 10:50

I cheered when Kevin and Claudia finally gave up. They won't be missed by me!

sashagabadon · 04/05/2023 11:24

I also thought Amber was a set up! Overly generous and came at just the right time to keep K and C in the competition. I was abit 🤔
but I enjoyed this leg more than the others.

looking forward to the final leg
and Kevin’s alright, don’t get the hate for him!

LindorDoubleChoc · 04/05/2023 11:27

I will miss Claudia and Kevin a bit. I didn't hate them. What he said about spending 42 days or whatever it was in the company of his daughter being the best thing he'd ever done in his whole life was very moving.

I enjoyed last night's episode more than most of them actually but just been reading in the press that lots of people think the help given to K and C the day before was all set up. I didn't get that impression particularly ... and what a wasted effort if so!

Oooh, just noticed how long this thread is getting! Are we going to need a new one for the final?

There's a direct train from Quebec city (or very very near) to Halifax, which is an hour and a half drive from Liverpool. Ok, its only 3 times a week, but if thry need to wait, they could use the time working.

None of this makes sense any more. They don't need to be faffing about with multiple buses and hitchhiking. Just get the train...

SoupDragon · 04/05/2023 11:48

I liked Kevin and Claudia. They were very honest about their difficult relationship.

I hope Kevin and Claudia's relationship is thriving now.

That comment he made was very heartwarming.

He really did motivate and push Claudia in the final episode.

That episode really showed the best in him. It's a shame that the other episodes portrayed him differently.

I thought that about the leg from Churchill - that train goes on to Winnipeg, but they all got off the train and then got buses to Winnipeg

RaraRachael · 04/05/2023 14:27

I found this a more interesting episode as to why Zainib and Mobeen were checking out at 11 pm when there were no buses till 9,45. It seemed a waste of a chunk of their lead but I do remember there being something about a 36 hour layover so presumably you have to leave 36 hours after you arrive regardless if it's in the middle of the night.

I though it was funny when Kevin claimed to be in his element packing bottles in the brewery due to his pub background then the owner asked Claudia to help him out as he was falling behind.

BogRollBOGOF · 04/05/2023 14:30

It was pretty inevitable that K&C's budget was going to rule them out, but in a way that brought out the best of them this episode, and it was eek it out as long as they could rather than his win at all costs mentality. It does look like they've learned and gained from it long term although it took long enough to get there!

I like all the other teams, there's no one I'm gunning for and no one I'd rather not see win. C&T have been pretty resourceful when things have been tough, things like bussing out to the motel last week, and have had a good work ethic. Monique had good strategy over the later overnight travel rather than getting accommodation, and Ladi has a great disposition working with people. Zainab and Mobeen are also very likable and have got on with things well.

There is a reasonable headstart, but it does seem fairly open for who will win and probably quite close.

I've enjoyed the pace more as there's been more variation of transport options.

Newgirls · 04/05/2023 17:54

Maybe the train was very expensive and they ruled it out?

Fleabea · 04/05/2023 18:01

I have been pretty critical of this series so far but I really enjoyed this episode. All the teams were being much more resourceful to preserve their budgets and there were some variety in routes.

Despite Kevin being a plonker, it was sad they ended their journey in the side of a road on the pissing rain.

Poor Zainab with her mouldy bananas.

New thread (if needed)

here

But we can carry on on this one until it fills up.

Good idea 👍

It wasn't. I looked it up. It wasn't hilariously cheap but cheaper than the cumulative bus routes by a fair amount.
