I've started a new thread already in case I forget to do it. Might not be needed but I think there's only about 50 posts left on the old thread. Shall we say we'll start posting on this one from tomorrow (Friday 5th) ?

Well done Trish and Cathie! Honestly I didn't expect them to win because they were really not the best at orientation! Grin
I'm glad they are happier with their work-life balance now, although it is very sad about Trish's husband.

NCTDN · 12/05/2023 14:22

On Twitter someone asked how her husband was. Somebody who I presented to be his daughter (same surname as Cathie?) said he was doing really well.

TeamSleep · 12/05/2023 16:27

I heard an interview with Tricia on local radio yesterday and she said that her husband is doing really well now but that he has had both his legs amputated due to having diabetes. She said they were going to use some of the money to get him dialysis abroad and also to go on a nice holiday together. She also said her and Cathie have the travelling bug now and Cathie is currently in Thailand and Tricia has a trip planned to walk some of the Great Wall of China next year.

PuppyMonkey · 12/05/2023 16:47

I enjoyed the reunion show, I warmed a lot more to Kevin and Claudia. I’d forgotten how long it took Cathie and Tricia to get out of the park in the first episode - amazing that they went on to win. Grin

BirdChirp · 12/05/2023 19:23

I found Ladi's words of wisdom schtick a bit wearing - his daughter is 25, not 15.

I'm glad the friends won, though would have been happy for any of the final 3 couples.

SoupDragon · 12/05/2023 19:35

To be fair though, Monique did mature over the course of the competition. I think he was right.

martinisforeveryone · 12/05/2023 20:55

I didn't mind who won and I enjoyed the reunion show where they were all more relaxed and reflective.

On balance, seeing now how hard things are for Trish and her family, I'm glad they took first place. You really shouldn't underestimate how awful and debilitating sight issues are and just how much they sap your confidence away.

Maireas · 12/05/2023 21:29

I was getting a bit annoyed with Ladi constantly calling his daughter a princess and being full of administration, it got a bit wearing. A well deserved win for C&T. They planned well from the start.

TeamSleep · 12/05/2023 22:57

Thanks for the link to that interview, it was really interesting. I thought it was lovely in the reunion show how genuinely happy Z&M were for T&C. I thought it was amusing when Claudia was saying how they were real contenders in the race because they often got to the checkpoints in first place - yeah only because they got taxis there! Hence why they eventually came unstuck and ran out of money! I just don’t know how they ever thought that was a winning strategy to blow all their money on taxis, it was so short sighted.

I find it refreshing there is no celebrity host, you can imagine the usual actor / comedian doing laboured skits at each check point and saying 'right guys so now you are heading to xxx and have we got a twist for you'
Or even ruining the ending with the usual big reveal 'and the winner of ratw 2023 is ...... 5 minute pause.......'
So hooray for that.

Fair play to the ladies but I really found as a woman of the same age their constant self referral to themselves as older ladies counter productive, I don't relate to that at all and feel they are people that probably seemed old all their lives- I have known people like that.
Cathie was difficult to warm to and I feel she was a bit superior and patronising to Tricia but they obviously love each other (as friends) so what do I know.

I still found Laddie a bit try hard nice guy, I wanted to love him but something was a bit off I don't know and the whole my 25 yo daughter is a princess stuff- well she's a grown woman and also if she is that's on you not really endearing.

Great advert for Canada!

PintoMilk · 13/05/2023 07:02

I was glad the friends won too. I think Z & M are both doctors, so £20k probably not a significant amount of money to them, it was nice they were happy C&T won, doubt they were fussed about missing out on the money.

Doctors don't earn that much - unless you become a consultant

AWhaleSwamBy · 13/05/2023 08:07

@curtaintwitcher23 That's so true about it being better for not having a celeb host. I wish more shows kept it about the people competing and not about the hosts. The Bake off and Sewing Bee shows for example.

I also found it a bit annoying them talking about being older ladies. Although, to be fair, I might have felt more 'older lady' with that trip. I'm sure my back would be aching and I'd feel tired 😅. I liked them.

TeamSleep · 13/05/2023 09:06

Something that’s annoying me is about half way through the race when they were all trying to catch that train north that only left twice a week, Ladi and Monique were struggling to get a lift to the station and then they had to hide in a van (I presume belonging to the production team?) as there had been a sighting of a bear. It looked like they were going to miss the train. Then the focus moved to the others and Claudia and Kevin having a struggle to get a lift to the station and resorting to blowing most of their budget on a taxi. Then when it’s back to L&M they are somehow at the train station just in time for the train. I can’t shake the feeling they cheated and got a lift there with the production crew. Why didn’t they show how they got there? Did I miss something?

NCTDN · 13/05/2023 09:08

I think there were a few of those moments. Like when the van they were driving broke down - but no show of what happened next.

Yes this is what put me off Trish and Cathie. Always referring to themselves as old. Late 40s isn't old! And being a bit dithery, as if all middle aged people are like that, we're not!

NCTDN · 13/05/2023 09:15

But they are old compared to the other teams.

ColgateAndMustardShouldNeverMix · 13/05/2023 09:16

NCTDN · 13/05/2023 09:15

But they are old compared to the other teams.

They were younger than Ladi and Kevin, I think.

NCTDN · 13/05/2023 09:17

Ah I meant if averaged out.

Paloma66 · 13/05/2023 09:24

I got annoyed by the women referring to themselves as old. I'm 10 years older than them but I honestly think I seem younger and although I'm very aware of my age I don't keep telling myself I'm old.

TeamSleep · 13/05/2023 09:25

NCTDN · 13/05/2023 09:08

Yes true, surely they can’t be helped though as that would make it so unfair but if they got there under their own steam then why not show how.

Were they really only late 40s? 😮
I would have said late 50s/early 60s.

Imnotdrinkingmerlot · 13/05/2023 10:18

I wonder if they were helped out by the team, as if they'd missed the train they would have got so far behind it would have been hard to catch up. They need enough teams to be close enough together to make it a close race eventually (even though that's unfair!).

I also felt this series was much more based on luck of who they met rather than tactics. I can't help feeling people are much nicer and more trusting when you have a camera crew with you - Canadians seem nice but there were a surprising amount of people willing to drive them hundreds of miles out of their way!

In the reunion it was nice to see them get on as I didn't think they'd bonded the same way as teams in series 2. The checkpoints also seemed like fun that we didn't see in the actual episodes. Funny that tricia turned up looking exactly the same, even with a backpack and walking trousers :) 😀

RaraRachael · 13/05/2023 10:39

I'm 10 years older than T and C and never think of myself as an old lady. They did come across as older though. If I compare them to my group of friends, they come across as much older than us,
