This might help :

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit So their not marrying was just due to the King not arranging it? I know Queen Charlotte the series has lots added to the real story but why then did she seem to not understand why her children were not married? (probably answering my own question in that a lot of it was fiction).

What about the boys? all those boys and only 1 of them married?

The eldest two were married, both unhappily and separated very soon after marrying.

But because there was princess charlotte, there was no huge rush for anyone else to...the line of succession was George then her, she was young and healthy and then she married so it all looked set, till her baby was stillborn and she died soon after.

mummyoffourminimes · 18/05/2023 13:02

Did I miss it? Where did Brimsleys boyfriend go?

Askil · 18/05/2023 14:58

Thanks all for filling in all those history gaps Grin. What a tragic story? especially the brother with 10 children and 'non' deemed suitable to ascend the throne. This whole royal shit show (literally!) has actually changed my mind so far as to want the whole institution abolished. People should be allowed to marry who they wish! 10 dc and non acknowledged. Love affairs that could result in 'marriage' because they weren't a good fit, it's totally outrageous.

The whole lot of them sounded like they were under a curse, self-imposed.

ToK1 · 18/05/2023 18:48

I totally misunderstood that, I thought the princess who died was the eldest prince's wife and baby!

She was married to Leopold who was also Queen Victoria's uncle. Leopold and Prince George did not get on.

William IV's ten illegitimate children didn't have such a bad life - or not for that reason anyway. They were all fully acknowledged as his children and given titles or ranks in accordance with their status as Duke/Prince/King's children. He and Dorothea seemed to have led quite a happy life in Bushy Park until they split (a few years before the Crisis, so not to do with his family).

There are a few tragic outcomes: William's eventual legal wife Queen Adelaide lost five babies in a few years, and his eldest son seems to have inherited George III's madness and killed himself. And the details of Princess Charlotte's death are very distressing. But those aren't due to their royal status. Dorothea came to a sad end but I'd tend to blame that on her appalling son-in-law.

Leopold later remarried and wound up as King of the Belgians. The current Belgian royal family descend from him.

It's such lovely easy viewing - really enjoying it!

She was married to Leopold who was also Queen Victoria's uncle. Leopold and Prince George did not get on.

Leopold was her choice, George had had her engaged to marry William, prince of orange.

Leopold was career army, youngest son of a duke, but they seem to have just fallen in love and she refused William and married Leopold, pretty much coerced George into agreeing to it.

Leopold was devastated by her death by all accounts, had a mistress about 10 yrs later that looked like her and when he finally did remarry he named his daughter after Charlotte.

So sad really...

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 18/05/2023 19:52

Would have been better if he hadn't remarried frankly - his son Leopold II was one of history's all-time greatest bastards. (responsible for untold atrocities in the Congo which he ran as a personal kleptocracy).

KillingMeDeftly · 18/05/2023 20:42

Yes @LadyIsabellaWrotham, you can say that again! Though I don't think the current king descends from Leopold II.

BeginningToLookALotLike · 18/05/2023 20:49

This is all fascinating - we need more Georgian history dramas!

PamTheExam · 18/05/2023 20:57

I had a rare evening to myself so was prepared to binge with my takeaway. Two episodes and called it a day. Fun but not that compelling for me.

MakesMeFeelSad · 18/05/2023 23:30

I think I said earlier on in the thread that I hadn't realised it was based on an actual king, although u had heard of the mad King!

It's all quite sad really . I did love the series though. Tbf even though queen Charlotte came across as a bit of a thoughtless arse in bridgeton I always thought there was glimpses of how she was a sucker for love, Simon in season 1 pleading his case, how she was with edwina in season 2 and how she looked at Kate and Anthony on the dance floor when she realised they were in love.

QuitChewingMyPlectrum · 18/05/2023 23:30

It's fabulous. I don't usually like period dramas, but this is fantastic.

I will probably go onto Bridgerton after this. I am a Shonda Rimes fan though.

Castleintheclouds · 19/05/2023 07:52

I was blown away by the Brimsley and Reynolds love story. It's left me feeling emotional!

Oh me too, must admit to shedding a few tears on the last episode.

Much preferred this series to the second Bridgerton

KillingMeDeftly · 19/05/2023 11:55

I must be the only person who preferred S2 to S1! I though the two leads had better chemistry and Jonathan Bailey is 🔥

Queen Charlotte tops them both though.

I did, too. I loved Simon but Daphne is by far the dullest of all of the Bridgerton female protagonists.

MarciaSaysANumber · 19/05/2023 14:06

I’m wondering if anyone else on this thread will be going to ‘Lady Danbury’s’ theatre workshop in Oxford soon? (Sadly only open to Oxford Uni. people.) The last one I attended was filled to the rafters - she’s a really excellent speaker in ‘real life’.

#Feelingblessed!

Popuppilot · 19/05/2023 14:28

Ok I just finished watching and have a question but it's a massive spoiler. So I'm going to do lots of dots. Scroll past if you don't want to see it.

Was Violet Bridgerton the daughter of the guy Lady Danbury had an affair with after her husband died? And if she was, was her display of hats her way of telling lady Danbury she knew she'd bonked her dad and that she was ok with it???

MarciaSaysANumber · 19/05/2023 14:30

Yes to both!

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 19/05/2023 14:30

Yes, definitely the girl is young Violet. I assume we're meant to know it's Violet from the start.

Popuppilot · 19/05/2023 14:34

Thank you I thought so! I only couponed on when they said her name in the last episode (I think) her dad always called her 'beauty' or 'brains' before that. I thought that was a lovely detail to show the two friends getting closer. I hope she gets herself another lover nice and discreetly 😊.
