Anyone watching this?
no spoilers but I’m already on episode 3 and love it!
Just George’s smile is melting me….

Yes - it really was unexpectedly excellent. I think on reflection I enjoyed it most out of all the Bridgerton (I definitely did not enjoy series 2). Perhaps because it was based a bit on a true story. And I like to think that at least some of those arranged marriages developed into proper love matches.

Sunshinegirl82 · 09/05/2023 21:06

I loved this, loved it.

I love Bridgerton anyway but this was so fantastically cast and I thought the storyline was great with nods to the real story whilst still being very much in the Bridger-verse.

Just a great job all round really!

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 09/05/2023 21:58

I think Shonda Rhimes is simply a better writer than Julia Quinn and Chris van Dusen (showrunner for original Bridgerton). I tried to read The Duke and I once and got about three pages in before having to give up.

cathyandclare · 09/05/2023 22:11

I think Brimsley said that everyone in the palace was devoted to the king. I wondered whether that was a nod to Reynolds being committed to service, so no time for lovely Brimsley as George became increasingly unwell. Hope there may be a way back for them in Shonda-time-is-a-flexible-concept-land.

Just finished this, having binged it in 2 days.
I really enjoyed Bridgerton anyway, but this was Bridgerton+
I loved Brimsley and Reynolds. And the ending had hard-hearted me unexpectedly needing a tissue!
Bravo

Best thing on TV at the moments
Loved Bridgerton 1, not so much season 2, this has restored my faith.

I just realised I included a spoiler in my post. I’m so, so sorry to anyone who reads it who is still watching the series.

I just saw lots of posts written in the past tense of how much people had loved it etc and I just got carried away with writing about my own thoughts.

Apologies to anyone I may have ruined it for 😢

MarciaSaysANumber · 10/05/2023 12:20

You could re-post without the spoiler, @MyTruthIsOut. Don’t fret, it’s easily done!

Snugglemonkey · 10/05/2023 15:05

That does not suggest he is alive.

dessicatedblackbird · 10/05/2023 20:11

Thank you for withdrawing your spoiler @MyTruthIsOut I haven't seen it all and didn't see your post so appreciated you asking for it to be removed.

This is the only series I haven't binged and it's because I know it has a sad ending. I love Bridgeton because it is bonkers and ultimately happy, I watch TV to escape (If I need to be cathartic I read) I want a happy ending.

I've just watched episode 4 and I find I am not distracted by my phone at all, normally I surf and watch but this consumes me.

Thanks @EineReiseDurchDieZeit I've ordered the book.

MsWhitworth · 11/05/2023 09:06

Just finished it. That final scene was so moving.

KillingMeDeftly · 11/05/2023 09:27

Yes, James Fleet is such a wonderful actor and had me in floods in his 5 mins or so of screen time.

AnyFucker · 11/05/2023 09:49

Do I need to have watched Bridgerton to watch this ?

martinisforeveryone · 11/05/2023 09:59

Do I need to have watched Bridgerton to watch this ?

I don’t think so, you just need a grip on the characters as it plays through two time frames. The main characters are in both series of Bridgerton., so if you wanted you could watch those later.

You also need to accept it’s not historically accurate.

I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Do I need to have watched Bridgerton to watch this ?

No, definitely not, it’s a proper prequel in that you could definitely watch it first IMO anyway.

AnyFucker · 11/05/2023 10:39

Thanks, will give it a try

Chrysanthemum5 · 11/05/2023 11:00

I loved it! I found the first episode a bit dull but it really picked up after that.

It has remained in my head, and made me think about things in a way that Bridgerton didn't. The writing is excellent and the parts all perfectly cast.

martinisforeveryone · 11/05/2023 11:52

I agree. I also thought the co-casting of the older and younger versions of each character was excellent.

MarciaSaysANumber · 11/05/2023 12:01

I liked the way it gave extra validation to original Bridgerton - both in terms of premise and characterisation.

So if anything it might be better to see Queen Charlotte first. (Although the others may suffer by comparison.)

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 11/05/2023 15:25

Has anyone seen the article about how there are portraits in the background of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert who weren't alive at the time Grin

Abracadabra12345 · 11/05/2023 15:44

FiloPasty · 05/05/2023 16:43

I’ve finished now and loved it!

Based entirely on this, I am going to start watching tonight! Thank you. I have to stop reading this thread so I don't stumble across any spoilers but will rejoin later

martinisforeveryone · 11/05/2023 16:03

I didn't see the article, that's funny, but, depending on where they were filming, they may not have been allowed to cover or remove the original portraits and the cost of CGI to disguise them probably wasn't worth it compared to the historical issue 😀

I did some serious googling over the weekend on King George's actual mental health conditions and the 'treatments' administered by the doctor shown in the TV series were actually quite close to what he endured in real life. The sad undercarriage of the show was how desperate someone with a mental illness was to be 'well' and 'normal', that they'd put themselves through almost anything for a cure. The final scene had me ugly bawling into a pillow!
