I miss Ashley - it wasn’t explored whether he was really, the police just said they found 20 kilos of cannabis on his property and that he was making a deal, (after he was treated for the kidnapping plot ) providing the police with lots of intel to get a reduced sentence, then of course he was shot, so I would assume he was part of the OCG rather than a rival.
series 1 is absolutely brilliant you could easily fit it all in again before Sunday !

It is brilliant, so many interesting characters and gripping scenes. I don't think it was ever explained why they dropped the ransom from £1m to 2 lots of £50k was it? such a lot of trouble and death for not that much reward. Did they just decide to go for less, did Nev refuse the £1m?

having only watched this last night…Ashley was waiting to join in traffic looked like a motorway junction and a motorbike with two up came up next to his car, and just executed him and sped off so yes probably …..I haven’t seen series 3 but I am catching up with 1 and 2 as I think it will pay dividends (i did the same with Dexter/New Blood) no hardship 🙂

It all went wrong before Nev could even think about that sort of money…..the rubbish gang of Ashley, Tommy and Lewis really stitched up Steve Pemberton / Kevin wetherall (acccount) and we’re giving him tiny amounts of money but he still accepted them. I hated his character he accepted no responsibility at all and blamed everybody else , so glad he ended up inside.
Ashley got too cocky and self assured and thought they could screw Nev for more money, then TLR offered to kill Ann for a share of five thousand pounds each from Ashley and Lewis, but it all went horribly wrong, there were bin bags of cash all over Ashley’s farm which Nev had made Kevin drop, it was undisclosed but I suppose you could follow it, I am guessing Nev got it back. poor Nev, such a nice man

when the police interviewed pemberton/weatherall he said he was instructed to make the interim cash drop offs at motorway service stations (think it was about 20k x2) but in reality he was just taking the cash from Nev straight round to Ashley, then the police did an ANPR scan and knew he was lying as his car was nowhere near the alleged drop offs. I loved it when they caught him out.

Just chiming in as someone from South-East Europe... the way they've researched/portrayed the Knezevic gang is so lazy - the language, the accents, and the cultural references are all over the place! No idea if they're supposed to be Romanian, Croatian, Serbian, Albanian... and then one of them has a weirdly Russian accent when attemptinga to speak Serbian/Croatian...!?

How hard can it be to get some local actors, or at the very least employ a consultant from the region to help them construct a more compelling narrative?

They did have one Croatian actress playing Ilinka in Season 2, but while she could speak Croatian, they gave her a typically Romanian name, which again makes no sense.

Just another instance of "oh well they're all Eastern European gangsters, doesn't really matter, let's just mash it all up."

For the record, I don't oppose having Eastern Europeans cast as gangsters - I think it's quite fun! lol. But if you're going to do it please get it right, it's 2023, you have the internet, there's no excuse.

I said on the old thread that I thought the Knezevics were a weak link in the series. You can really tell that Sally Wainwright isn't writing a world she knows when they are on screen. Given that Catherine has made a big deal about the likes of her never getting to tackle crime above street level, it's arguable that the Knezevics could have been referenced but never depicted. I found their scenes in the last episode like something out of a Danny Dyer straight-to-video movie. Last series I found the people-trafficking storyline a bit superfluous. Along with allowing 8 year old Ryan to cycle home alone from school and failing to renew the No Contact Order, I also thought that endangering her elderly neighbour by moving the Croatian woman in with her was another example of Catherine doing something that she would be far too savvy to do just because it served the plot. It was like it had never crossed her mind that it would be dangerous to house someone wanted by a ruthless international OCG in a civilian's home.

If you think that's bad, you want to try being a Geordie and listening to a southern actor strangling your accent.

Agree about the accents. Can really take you out of what you're watching when they're terrible.

But I think in episode 2(?) didn't he come home and find her upstairs in bed when the girls had been left on their own downstairs?
