I think there was a lot of…this is going somewhere…and then it doesn’t. There have been not red herrings but I guess just as in life. Maybes and could have beens.

I recently watched Last Tango in Halifax for the first time. I really enjoyed it, but the final two series had these frustrating storylines which were given a lot of time but never paid off.

HannaHat · 29/01/2023 23:01

Anne the cow 😫
Ugh can't believe Catherine didn't say I love you back to Ryan 😭
Claire I can understand, I wouldn't want to speak to her again either.

Sunshinegirl82 · 29/01/2023 23:02

I think, from a plot perspective, Catherine needs to be awful to everyone and not show emotion to Ryan. If she had, everyone would be pretty sure he'd stay with her and not be tempted by TLR's offer. You need the uncertainty to keep up the tension.

My hoped for conclusion (that everything hits rock bottom before good (mostly) triumphs over evil) requires it all to seem pretty shitty at this point so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

TheQueensCousin · 29/01/2023 23:02

I think that the OCG might try to finish him off. TLR has served his purpose and he needs to be gone. He's been their puppet, just a hunch.

XanaduKira · 29/01/2023 23:03

Thought it was a superb episode, even including the bullying of the officer re aliens!

Catherine is hard-faced but she's totally traumatised and has been betrayed beyond belief by those closest to her. Her words were harsh to Claire, but completely true. Claire deserved to hear it.

I also think that Ann was correct to be brutally honest with Ryan. Not telling him hasn't helped, and again, what she went through at the hands of TLR was so horrific that I'm not surprised she gave Ryan what for - imagine being face to face with someone who had sympathy for the person who did that to you. I hope she comes good and stops drinking though! I'd love her to have a spin off series!

Can't wait for next week. Really hope TLR gets his comeuppance and Catherine is instrumental in bringing him down!

FlyRobinFly · 29/01/2023 23:03

Has anybody here seen the mention of Catherine in Last Tango in Halifax? I saw a clip earlier but can’t find it. Alan’s daughter has a go at a police officer and the officer says “You’re lucky Sargaent Cawood isn’t here, she wouldn’t stand for you talking to an officer like that!”. Absolutely brilliant.

CuriousMama · 29/01/2023 23:03

FlyRobinFly · 29/01/2023 23:00

Fair enough, still wouldn’t be surprised by a twist about Poppy’s paternity though (to explain the tension between her and Neckbeard) and they will have to link this story to the main story at some point so why not through TLR? Even if the finer details are completely different, maybe he knows Poppy isn’t his but not the details.

As I said won’t happen but not completely out of the realms of possibility.

I agree she probably isn't his. Probably someone she's had drugs off. Faisal or someone prior?

Testina · 29/01/2023 23:03

Ooooh - maybe all-seeing Poppy took a packet of Diazepam that mum had but Rob didn’t get to, to flush down the loo, and keeps them in her coat pocket. And those prescribed packets lead to Faizal.

OJbreakfasttime · 29/01/2023 23:05

When Ryan visited TLR in prison he had told him about neckbeard picking on him at school.

I wonder if their paths will somehow cross and TLR will kill neckbeard,

007DoubleOSeven · 29/01/2023 23:05

Maybe Faisal will give a lead to the OCG. Blaming them for forcing him to give drugs to the dead woman

Maybe Faisal will take over from Darius as the new drug king pin 😆

Sally wainwright has serious skills in showing the vulnerability in TLR and making us empathise with him!

Minimalme · 29/01/2023 23:05

Anyone else think Ryan will set TLR up and shop him?

He's been given a whole lot of truths in this episode.

redspottedmug · 29/01/2023 23:06

Just musing.

Alison. They are all holed up at Nev's and Alison works for Nev...

Faisal. The serial number on Joanne's controlled drugs will surely lead the cops straight to his pharmacy (although it's not his own business, I believe he works for his father in law or brother in law). It won't necessarily connect him to the OCG. Unless he spills.

Nev's house is roughly the size of Sandringham.

Probably he's 3 miles away down a corridor

My parents house is similar to Nev’s (but not quite the size on Sandringham) the thick walls and layout make it virtually sound proof. As teenaged boyfriend based escapades can attest.

Is that when Nicola Walker's cows get out and are all over the road and bridge?

duc748 · 29/01/2023 23:08

Catherine had that chance, and didn't! But I still think some posters are being a bit harsh on her! She has sacrificed so much for Ryan, and after Ann's outburst, he knows that all too well. They've obviously left the door open to the idea that Ryan is just stringing TLR along, but I have a nasty suspicion that it'll be messier than that.

EsmaCannonball · 29/01/2023 23:09

I think, because television time is running out, I just wanted to see TLR out and interacting with people. I want him to have scenes with the main characters, and now there isn't really time for that. There is just so much to wrap up, especially with all the Faisal and PE teacher stuff. I'm really not interested in the Knezevics and the two henchmen and their money. They feel parachuted in from a totally different type of drama (one starring Ross Kemp).

I think he's tempted

Testina · 29/01/2023 23:09

I don’t think Ryan will do anything big and heroic - he’s just a 16yo kid, and not a very bright one at that. But I think he will reject TLR at some point in the episode and that will be a huge trigger point.

I reckon Beetroot Chopper We Have Fucking Wifi will get fed up of TLR’s bossiness and hold him down with a paring knife to his throat whilst Alison double de-clutches him 👍🏻

Don't the police already have a packet? Didn't Catherine take some tablets from Joanne when she arrested her, and they were still in packs - and Jo subsequently lied to Faizal about it?

Sunshinegirl82 · 29/01/2023 23:11

Someone has got to nick Alison's truck and come a cropper because they don't double declutch - surely!

Beetroot Chopper We Have Fucking Wifi, I’m in tears 😂

I wonder if he’s another one forced by the OCG to let them use their home.

I can believe it. I was shocked when she didn't but then thought – she is so angry and feels so incredibly betrayed by everyone in her family. It's as if she is the only adult among them all. Her ex, his wife, her sister and spineless partner, Ryan - all of them just bumble along doing what they like never thinking through the consequences. I loved it when Ryan just took off his coat and let it drop to the floor in Nev's house - a tiny sign that he still had no appreciation of all these people having their lives disrupted for him.

dapsnotplimsolls · 29/01/2023 23:12

Anyone else have their doubts about this mythical house in Marbella?

Supersimkin2 · 29/01/2023 23:13

It’s perfectly credible and perfectly tragic that Catherine’s glorious gob turns ‘nasty’ at the worst possible moment.

She’s been shat on by all and sundry and her worst nightmare has come true. She erupts. But now’s the time for togetherness and love to keep the family safe. From her, as the family glue.

Tragic flaw = glorious Yorkshire frankness. Shakespeare couldn’t have timed it better.
