I thought Kevin Doyle was brilliant as John Wadsworth. He really captured the tragi-comic pathetic-ness of the character. The funniest bit in Happy Valley is when he thinks he's got away with murder and is singing along to Don't Stop Me Now in his car.

Yes ! I forgot that he was station surfing wasn’t he 😭
brilliantly cast as not only would ‘you would never have thought’ type he was also a detective
i did find his eventual discovery a little ‘scooby doo’ though

There seems to be HV trailer, ads, articles, predictions everywhere I turn! Am avoiding Everything

tell you who I didn’t like much though was Richard Harris son Jared, he was in mad men, had absolutely zilch charisma and not that great an actor as well

Are You Mad??? ShockShockShock

He is invariably The Best Thing in anything he’s in. Fantastic actor - so appealing and brings such wit to a script.

Yes! Chernobyl anyone?

Inhibitor · 28/01/2023 21:53

Just realised what I posted could be a spoiler - I’m really sorry! Anyway, I looked it up and it’s not a dead end so that’s my theory out the window.

TwoMonthsOff · 28/01/2023 21:54

@RandomersAssociation
i may be mad ! I was really surprised who his father was……i have only seen him in made men though to be fair

amithebadguy · 28/01/2023 21:54

@PictureConsequences Winnie did speak Croatian! And yes, I think the actress is English. In her defence, she obviously made a huge effort to learn her lines, and I'd appreciate it if my own partner could say half as much in the language 😂 but it was immediately obvious that she's not a native speaker, and it sounded like she either knew Russian before or was taught her lines by a Russian speaker. I say this because the way she pronounces certain letters/words is distinctly Russian, as opposed to how an English person learning from scratch would do it. I have no beef with an English actress trying to speak the language (it's an honour!), but the dramatic effect is not so convincing when she speaks with an English AND a Russian accent at the same time iyswim?

That said, Winnie was (to me at least) one of the more convincing characters from an accent/language perspective. I feel like at least some effort went into Winnie and Ilinka in S2 - it wasn't perfect, but it didn't disrupt the flow of the series for me.

In S3 however, it seems like they've abandoned any attempt to make it remotely convincing... The actors in S3 seem to be from an assortment of countries (both UK and Eastern European), and are each doing their take on an EE gangster accent which is fine but just ends up being inconsistent and unconvincing. It's basically like getting an improv group together with the theme "Eastern European Gangster" and hoping for the best...

TwoMonthsOff · 28/01/2023 21:55

I have not seen Chernobyl it is on my watchlist though

EsmaCannonball · 28/01/2023 21:56

When Kirsten was murdered I never really understood why she hadn't been wary of a bright yellow mini randomly deciding to pull over at the scene of a traffic stop in the middle of nowhere, especially when that same mini turned around and pulled up again immediately behind. It seemed odd that she'd noticed it but wasn't at all worried.

Chernobyl is brilliant!

<wonders if any of us ever leave the house>

@Emotionalsupportviper
Who is the son that played in the lord lucan thing? Think that may have been Timothy wests son? In which case totally agree he was brilliant
think he played lord lucan -it was a good drama

i tell you who I didn’t like much though was Richard Harris son Jared, he was in mad men, had absolutely zilch charisma and not that great an actor as well

Neither Richard Harris's son nor Denzel Washington's son have what their Dads have/had!

TwoMonthsOff · 28/01/2023 22:22

@EsmaCannonball
I think…..catherine knew that Kirsten wasn’t really cut out for being a Police Officer, she was really trying to prove something to herself I think in that scene when the dispatcher had gone for a break, she thought maybe ‘it’s okay I can handle this on my own’ maybe remembering Catherine’s pep talk….I don’t know but us as viewers were easily able to predict a disaster but possibly not what happened. It was awful really

upinaballoon · 28/01/2023 22:23

CuriousMama · 28/01/2023 18:38

Yes and she's 81

I liked Angela Pleasance years ago when she was Lady Bertram languishing on a sofa all day.

HannaHat · 28/01/2023 22:23

Didn't know Winnie was Donald Pleasance's daughter but she's the spit of him.

TwoMonthsOff · 28/01/2023 22:24

@upinaballoon
also Jaden Smith .I guess it must be some huge shoes to fill

did not know Denzel had an actor son

Yeah. Getting a bit sick if it now. I mean it's good but I think all the hype is turning me off slightly. Too gushy.

I don't think Catherine thought that about Kirsten really. She was just frustrated that she got called in to deal with that counsellor as Kirsten was intimidated by him. I think she could see the potential but wanted to toughen her up

The call she made was just to PNC the van reg. If she'd got through it probably wouldn't have changed the outcome for her but the police would have been able to trace the van and its keeper much quicker.

TwoMonthsOff · 28/01/2023 23:26

@mum2jakie
i often wonder what happened to coke head council man….but Kirsten to me didn’t appear to be at all confident, and seemed like she could be easily intimated by any aggressive man, unlike Ann (who in my head I think look very alike actually )
Poor Kirsten 😢

I am looking forward to tomorrow’s episode and have nothing to add beyond saying that I’ve just worked out the I got my scarf 8 Christmases ago.

I don’t understand your post, @Pl242 , but if it’s about Catherine’s scarf can you tell me more?

From a picture I saw of one of the ends it looked hand knitted, and I’d love to know what yarn was used so I can make one…. This is no more fan-girl than making a Dr Who scarf, and quicker to knit.

I read somewhere recently that it looks like the scarf Catherine wore in the earlier series, but that the colours seem brighter now.

So, what do we think Mr 'Enderson aka Neck Beard will do? We all know he "should" call the CID copper back & explain but as suspect number 1 I think he'll try to dispose of her.

What is the significance of the little girl's coat????!!!???

Why did no one think to call Ryan's school to either make sure he turned up or explain to them they need to keep a close eye on him?

Will slightly pissed off retired but returned to work check in copper lady actually get to throw this leaving do with her £2k & 8p? Will there be strippers?

Will lovely but slightly unhinged pharmacist get found out?

Who will go to Eastern European Thug Number 1's wedding if everyone is too busy collecting protection money & starting fights in court?

Is Katherine's ex aka Grandad going to get beaten up for knowing too much about the thugs?
