Eee by gum, stick a tiny phone up yer bum. By 'eck, imagine if it wasn't turned off and tiny pockets of trapped wind building up in your rectum (you can't risk a fart of course) pressed against the tiny buttons and you accidentally phone your great aunt Mary who is quite deaf and suddenly there's "is that you Sharon love? It sounds a bit windy where you are can you speak up love?" blaring out of your arse like some random tannoy. That would take some ecplain

😂

I’ve only just got into HV - had avoided it as get very affected by graphic crime dramas but now regretting as having binged the first two seasons I can see whilst it’s disturbing it’s not gratuitous in any way.

its interesting as I watched the first two of series 3 without having gone back and the characters seem so different without the backstory!

One part I thought was so well done in the first 2 series and you don’t usually see is the effect being called into school all the time has on you as a parent. One of my DC has ADHD ( although obviously not the background trauma!) and we had many incidents similar to Ryan ( actually lots of the behaviour very similar). I’ve never seen it shown before just how hard it is as a parent, how small you are made to feel, the worry about what it means about your child. Anyway very minor point and obviously I pick up as it is relevant to my circumstances but so well done.

Absolutely agree.

My son is a year younger than Ryan, I watched both series 1 & 2 when they came out and we were living with the 'school summons' at the time (also has ADHD!)

Happy Valley Day fellow Tiny Arse phone friends!

T- 9 hours. Going for a long walk with the hound to kill time. He won’t be pleased, he’s a lazy bastard 😂

I think James Norton is soooo lovely. A clip of him chatting about HV came up on my FB feed and he just praises Sarah so much, whilst being so modest about himself. He comes across as such a nice man.

He's lovely and so versatile

I've been wondering how you all knew Catherine didn't get a ticket for her car, cos I just thought they just hadn't shown it and was inconsequential. Because she locked the car door as soon as she got out! I'm rewatching it in preparation for tomorrow night...

Yes no parking problems

A convenient space for the truck etc

MavisMcMinty · 15/01/2023 12:34

It’s fine not to like something, why do you need our advice on whether or not to persevere? If it’s too dark it’s too dark, if it’s too violent it’s too violent, it’s not your thing, forget about it.

MavisMcMinty · 15/01/2023 12:35

Sorry, that was for @MonsoonMadness .

JaneJeffer · 15/01/2023 12:40

@MonsoonMadness there's a thread with someone having the same dilemma as you. It might help you decide

Thinking some more.

Ryan has been visiting Tommy for a year. Yet still very much loves Catherine. Wanting to go with her to the Himalayas etc. maybe he's visiting him for closure?

upinaballoon · 15/01/2023 13:48

I know TLR is utterly vile but I couldn't help smiling at the scene (S2 or S3) when a lawyer went to see him and asked if he'd had something to eat, and he said, "I've had a sangwich and a wee-wee", and then went over and sat as close as he possibly could to the poor man.

PictureConsequences · 15/01/2023 14:03

MonsoonMadness · 15/01/2023 12:09

I have given up on series one. It’s just too dark. Does it continue like this or should I try again?

How far did you get? Have you got to the Kirsten bit? It's less violent after that ...

XanaduKira · 15/01/2023 14:18

EmilyDickinson · 15/01/2023 10:30

I'm a bit overinvested but wtf were they thinking! Tommy Lee Royce fgs who murdered Kirtsen and very nearly murdered Anne and Catherine. It's just staggeringly stupid.

Totally agree, plus he killed the two men who were helping him hide after Anne’s kidnap. His crimes are (from memory) drug running, murder (Kirsten), kidnap (Anne), rape (Anne), attempted murder (Catherine), murder (Elliot), murder (the man who was hiding him), breaking and entering (the barge), attempted murder (Ryan). Plus numerous assaults and resisting arrests and I'm sure lots of other things I haven't thought of. Would any sane person let their nephew anywhere near him?

  • some of the murders might be manslaughter

I completely agree. If it weren't for Claire's name being on the visiting order, I would have believed that she really did think they were just shopping.

I honestly can't get over this level of betrayal. Her and Catherine seemed so close and (almost!) happy in episode 1, for Claire to have been doing this behind her back.

Catherine said Claire is weak, so can only assume that's the case and she's given in to constant badgering from Ryan and Neil.

If only Catherine hadn't let the court order expire that meant TLR wasn't allowed any kind of contact with Ryan as surely that would have meant Ryan wouldn't be allowed to visit him.

EsmaCannonball · 15/01/2023 14:19

I've rewatched the first couple of episodes and noticed that the SUV that dropped off the baddies outside the pharmacy was being driven by Anthony Flanagan, who played the policeman in Shameless and has been in other Sally Wainwright things, so I'm guessing he's going to be a chief gangster.

Twice now Ryan has very pointedly said, 'Revenge is a dish best served cold.' Revenge upon TLR or someone who has crossed TLR? Exactly what kind of closure is Ryan after?

Does TLR now stand for Tiny Little Receiver? Or maybe Tiny Lubed Rectum? I'm still concerned about the logistics of these phones. Having known people who have worked in A&E, I know that, when it comes to the bum, what goes up doesn't necessarily come down.

The original information about Ryan's prison visits came from a prison officer via a police Prison Liaison Officer via another PLO and then via another PLO. Is Catherine being played here? I think I don't want to believe that Claire could do something so stupid. I still think it's possible that Claire thinks Neil is taking Ryan to something like AA meetings.

Towntroubadour · 15/01/2023 14:33

@MonsoonMadness, it’s gritty and very real. So it does have a dark edge to it, but it’s brilliantly written and Catherine is just a total legend. I’ve just re-watched series 1 and 2 as I absolutely love it. Another good show is Last Tango in Halifax with the great Sarah Lancashire.

a very young chemist 😂

I spotted that too!

Thequeenofwishfulthinking · 15/01/2023 15:05

I’m still holding out for a different explanation for Claire’s actions. Either that she’s been lied to by Neil and thinks he’s taken Ryan to the sky diving place to practice for the upcoming dive. Or thats what Neil and Ryan are actually doing. In both instances whoever is visiting TLR has provided fake names. (whoever is plotting his escape)

sweatervest · 15/01/2023 15:11

Surely you'd have to take your passport or something heavy duty as i.d. when you visit someone in a prison like TLR is in. So it must have been Claire and eurgh Neil. Also she harped on about being in Leeds so there couldn't be any confusion with Leeds v Sheffield

I think the skydiving thing was just a thing and gosh what a nice present etc etc (although sky diving to me would be a punishment)

Hurry up, nine o'clock.

MetaDaughter · 15/01/2023 15:19

Are we being misled? It seems so early in the series for such a major revelation …

Yes, I'd forgotten how well that aspect was portrayed. It struck a chord for me too, as the parent of That Child for most of primary school (now dx ASD and awaiting ADHD assessment).

The phone calls... "can you just pop down to the school Mrs TinyArsePhone? Nothing to worry about, he's fine, but there's been a bit of an incident"

And the walk of shame at pick up time... "oh hello, if we could just step into the classroom so I can let you know what happened at break"

Day after day after day after day...

The effect of that relentless daily stress and anxiety is so much greater than people realise and I don't think I've seen it shown on screen so well before or since.

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 15/01/2023 15:35

I wonder if Neil has been groomed by TLR, in the same way that tiny scary dark haired lady in series 2 was. Remember Neil is quite susceptible; he was blackmailed by the tall slim lady that ended up being murdered in series 1. Maybe he is being manipulated by Royce and because Claire is so in thrall to Neil she is reluctantly going along with it. Reluctantly because she refuses to visit the prison herself.

TinyArsePhone · 15/01/2023 15:41

I still think it's going to be relevant that Moaning Myrtle was a pharmacist...

And Neil's backstory/past is surely going to be important at some point. He is vulnerable to blackmail, we know that already, but why was that dropped in if it's not going somewhere?

Arg I can't wait for 9pm. DH thinks I'm mad. I never look forward to anything on TV this much!

Wisterical · 15/01/2023 15:59

Clare will by now have told Neil all the awful details around Becky's death so maybe Neil, creepily thinking it'll ingratiate him with Catherine and her clan, has convinced Ryan to take revenge on TLR ('...best served cold') and (weak) Clare is reluctantly going along with it. No idea what the revenge could be though.

This is the least bonkers of all the implausible theories I've had this week! I'm just desperate for Catherine not to have been so betrayed by Clare.

Surely the blackmail thing was only pertinent to series 2, that's how we found out the woman had form?
