First thread is nearly full but please check if still room to post by going to www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4710280-happy-valley-series-3-bbc1-9pm-starts-1-january-2023-no-spoilers-tv-pace?page=40

And once it is welcome to everyone. Looking forward to any number of theories and learning things one never wanted to know about like tiny phones.

I’m re-watching series 1. Tommy running over the policewoman (Kirsten) is absolutely awful. Waiting as patiently as possible for tomorrow’s episode.

Really hope we see the back of overly familiar creep Neil after this. Even after only been together a short time in series 2 he was stood in the kitchen hanging onto Claire like he'd been part of the family for years.

Claire can be a bit wet but she's always been so supportive of Catherine. This just seems such a stretch. You could maybe forgive the initial betrayal if it was a one off but the 3 of them have been telling her bare faced lies for months.

@Janiie I think it was almost a year as visits were every few months according to dates

I'm a bit overinvested but wtf were they thinking! Tommy Lee Royce fgs who murdered Kirtsen and very nearly murdered Anne and Catherine. It's just staggeringly stupid.

Yes he's allegedly his Dad but all wet claire had to do was tell Catherine what Ryan wanted from the start. Ugh and grubby beardy Neil sticking his oar in Angry.

Ulysses · 14/01/2023 20:52

It’s probably telling that Claire only attended the first visit, the other two were with Neil only. Maybe she thought along the lines that Ryan would see what a monster his dad is but that’s backfired.

sweatervest · 14/01/2023 21:07

oh and also i'm going to see james norton in that play that he's in in london. there were still a few tickets spare even after he'd been talking about it on graham norton.

i have no idea what the play is about but he's in it and i will be having ninety five hot flushes at seeing him in real life. i couldn't give two hoots if the play is about the life of a baby ant tbh. i hope he wears the purple cardigan he wore on graham norton. never has a purple cardigan looked so good.

upinaballoon · 14/01/2023 21:13

You like him just a little but, then, @sweatervest ?

upinaballoon · 14/01/2023 21:14

Damn, not little but. Little bit. I know an over-80 year old who has quite a thing about James!

I’m getting that vibe as well.

PictureConsequences · 14/01/2023 21:57

I've been wondering how you all knew Catherine didn't get a ticket for her car, cos I just thought they just hadn't shown it and was inconsequential. Because she locked the car door as soon as she got out! I'm rewatching it in preparation for tomorrow night...

AutisticLegoLover · 14/01/2023 22:16

Eee by gum, stick a tiny phone up yer bum. By 'eck, imagine if it wasn't turned off and tiny pockets of trapped wind building up in your rectum (you can't risk a fart of course) pressed against the tiny buttons and you accidentally phone your great aunt Mary who is quite deaf and suddenly there's "is that you Sharon love? It sounds a bit windy where you are can you speak up love?" blaring out of your arse like some random tannoy. That would take some ecplain

AutisticLegoLover · 14/01/2023 22:16

Explaining to both great auntie Mary and the prison staff Blush

sweatervest · 14/01/2023 23:52

@upinaballoon @Blondeshavemorefun who doesn't love a man who can totally own it wearing a purple cardigan and being massively fabulous?!

sweatervest · 14/01/2023 23:52

i have mentionitis re: the norton. (james, not graham)

@sweatervest the play couldn't be further from the story of a baby ant! The book is 800 pages long and ripped my heart into a million pieces. I can only imagine it being even more visceral being played out on the stage. Take tissues.

Prisoners have to go on a special xray chair sometimes to check. Saw it on telly.

I saw this on a prison documentary! One man sat on the chair and they estimated he had 4 tiny mobile phones up his bum! They kept him in isolation in a holding cell for 3 days until he dropped all the tiny phones before sending him up to the wing. Weirdest Mexican stand off ever.

EmilyDickinson · 15/01/2023 10:30

Totally agree, plus he killed the two men who were helping him hide after Anne’s kidnap. His crimes are (from memory) drug running, murder (Kirsten), kidnap (Anne), rape (Anne), attempted murder (Catherine), murder (Elliot), murder (the man who was hiding him), breaking and entering (the barge), attempted murder (Ryan). Plus numerous assaults and resisting arrests and I'm sure lots of other things I haven't thought of. Would any sane person let their nephew anywhere near him?

  • some of the murders might be manslaughter
Roussette · 15/01/2023 10:37

I think James Norton is soooo lovely. A clip of him chatting about HV came up on my FB feed and he just praises Sarah so much, whilst being so modest about himself. He comes across as such a nice man.

Maestro12 · 15/01/2023 11:43

I’ve only just got into HV - had avoided it as get very affected by graphic crime dramas but now regretting as having binged the first two seasons I can see whilst it’s disturbing it’s not gratuitous in any way.

its interesting as I watched the first two of series 3 without having gone back and the characters seem so different without the backstory!

One part I thought was so well done in the first 2 series and you don’t usually see is the effect being called into school all the time has on you as a parent. One of my DC has ADHD ( although obviously not the background trauma!) and we had many incidents similar to Ryan ( actually lots of the behaviour very similar). I’ve never seen it shown before just how hard it is as a parent, how small you are made to feel, the worry about what it means about your child. Anyway very minor point and obviously I pick up as it is relevant to my circumstances but so well done.

MilkshakesBringAllTheCoosToTheYard · 15/01/2023 12:02

Ow do my tiny telephone fanny friends! Please may I join?

God I'm loving this series so much, Catherine is an ICON. Still can't believe Claire would do that to Ryan though...

Weeping with jealousy that some people are watching from series 1 again, I watched the whole thing on a terrible sleeper journey from London on the old sitting upright chairs in the old train, while the people across the aisle got pissed on three bottles of wine and got off with each other. What a show!

MonsoonMadness · 15/01/2023 12:09

I have given up on series one. It’s just too dark. Does it continue like this or should I try again?
