I think she's better off dead going by how she looked Sad

fairypeasant · 17/01/2023 19:32

I just love the decor at Catherine's and Clare's.

JaneJeffer · 17/01/2023 19:33

Maybe Joyce has info that will help the investigation out and she's not involved in anything dodgy.

the80sweregreat · 17/01/2023 19:40

Joyce and Catherine had a row one night ( was it series one ?) and they had a bit of a Mexican stand off
Seemed something going on there, but she bought her the cactus and they seemed to be ok again : it seems a bit of a volatile friendship

I like it too!
Dh hates it ! Too messy for him.
It shows character

It's very much Claire's decor. I bet Catherine couldn't care less.

the80sweregreat · 17/01/2023 19:47

Catherine was probably too exhausted by everything , working , bringing up Ryan , Clare and her recovery , getting over Becky and her own breakdown to have time to decorate or even think about any of that over the years.
Daniel said he didn't like it with Lucy as it was too tidy or something: maybe they all just prefer a more lived in place?
I can imagine Clare being into 'up cycling ' too
Getting things out of skips !

JaneJeffer · 17/01/2023 19:57

Daniel said he didn't like it with Lucy as it was too tidy
I was nodding along with him Grin

storminabuttercup · 17/01/2023 19:59

I think I said it up thread but I think Joyce has known Cathrine forever and Catherine can be herself with her so she sometimes gets it in the neck when she's in a mood. She thinks highly of her as when Annie first joins the force she says Joyce is the go to person for everything or something to that effect.

the80sweregreat · 17/01/2023 20:00

That house the dad has bought for Ann and Daniel looks like a haunted place.
Lots of Windows

I was just thinking about the recurring themes in Happy Valley, one of them being men who are out of their depth and blundering into trouble, or rather acts of violence against women.

If my memory serves me right, in the story line of the detective who murdered the woman he was having an affair with, and the chemist, they both snapped when the women concerned laughed at them.

What is that saying, men wory that women will laugh at them, women worry that men will kill them.

It was definitely Jo stifling a smile at the thought of Pfizer being "strong" that initially angered him.

the80sweregreat · 17/01/2023 20:14

I think the dodgy pharmacist has ' small man ' syndrome.
Bossy wife, acres of debt , daughters who think his a bit of a loser , maybe ?
Not condoning what he did to Joanna though
:(

MavisMcMinty · 17/01/2023 20:18

Poor Jo looked pretty unrecoverable anyway, even without a tiny syringeful of air that he may or may not have injected her with. Severe brain injury going by the flickering and twitching, doubt she’d be in any state to give evidence, ever again.

the80sweregreat · 17/01/2023 20:21

It is out of character for the policeman and this dodgy pharmacist to kill people , which is worrying that it's not always a ' type ' who do kill someone , it can , sometimes, just be anyone if pushed too far

EsmaCannonball · 17/01/2023 20:23

I, too, love the look of Catherine's house, so warm and homely and lived in. I noticed that there were twinkly fairy lights hanging up all over Neil's tiny flat, so it's definitely Claire's homemaking influence.

I've also just realised - Cathy and Claire. Two women you could sit down with and ask their advice.

the80sweregreat · 17/01/2023 20:27

Clare I'd get on with I think
Catherine .. I think she would find me too annoying as I'm a people pleaser!
I'd like to think we'd get on, but it wouldn't be a firm friendship.
I admire her though

Towntroubadour · 17/01/2023 20:33

I think Sally shows that a lot of men are capable of hurting women. There seems to be a theme of violent men and drugs.

the80sweregreat · 17/01/2023 20:38

Men, violence , drugs
Although a lot of crime fiction I read lately tend to have lady killers more than the men at the moment
Different motives

LavenderHillMob · 17/01/2023 20:55

fairypeasant · 17/01/2023 18:53

This isn't line of duty, everyone!

Chekhov's clutch is important. Ryan is just vulnerable. The dynamic with the abusive teacher has already been explained by Joanne- he finds these lads, breaks them, then gets his narc supply off making them teacher's pet.

Joyce is just Joyce - she reflects the audience. Loves Catherine, finds her infuriating, and noses at the screen so we get a look.

Pfizer is a gonner, but later. He will have killed Joanne. TLR is a manipulative shit- no redemption arc there. Tweedledum or Tweedledee will steal Alison's double declutch wagon, and mow down someone we care about. Richard is wet and useless- there's a theme of the strong but broken woman surrounded by these soggy marshmallows. There will be a tense finale, and Ryan and Catherine will go to the Himalayas.

Maybe Catherine & Claire will go to the mountains? #soppy ending 🙏

the80sweregreat · 17/01/2023 21:01

What will become of Neil ?..
I looked up the Himalayas , it'll take her months to drive there! Bit of an odd place to want to go to ?
Her rant about Pilates / yoga was funny.
I am rubbish at both and it does make you break wind !

That’s perfectly put.

midsomermurderess · 17/01/2023 21:22

The Himalayan mountain range is enormous, stretching from Pakistan, across several states in India and to Nepal. It’s not just Everest base camp or Rishikesh. Why would it be an odd place to dream of going? And the journey there would be part of the adventure, although she’d have problems with Iran and Afghanistan.

CanofCant · 17/01/2023 21:22

Joyce and Catherine argued in series 2, because Joyce was trying to help Catherine find an alibi for Lynn's murder and Catherine was pissed off that she had even been asked for one. She bit Joyce's head off when she pushed her for details after they had been out at some Abba act/restaurant.

Absolutely - there's nothing dodgy about Joyce at all.

Poke · 17/01/2023 21:25

I disagree. Joyce is up to something!
