The scene with Catherine and Claire, all tightly contained anger and despair, in hushed voices in the coffee shop was brilliant. The tension!

I think the sky diving is significant. TLR (Telephone in Lower Regions) is teeing Ryan up to book a plane flight. Then he’ll kidnap Ryan, steal the plane and head for Spain.

I don’t think TLR is remotely interested in Ryan for any other reason that exerting power over him and the family. His gaining access to vulnerable Ryan is purely manipulative.

Wow, great idea Re hijacking the plane from the skydiving - good thinking :)!

I think that Cathrine will lose her retirement pension for hitting that chap

NOoooooo! That would be SO UNFAIR!!!!

If that happens, can we start a GoFundMe for her, to kit out the Landrover and pay for the trip?

TitsInAbsentia · 17/01/2023 17:15

If Oor Ryan does meet a sticky end I'd see Catherine and Claire driving off together to the Himalayas.

@ilovebrie8 I think this is the brief series 1 and 2 catch up I posted in the last thread. I can't check it as dh is asleep next to me! I know it was the BBC one on YouTube anyway.

We're all over involved. There'll have to be some Happy Valley survival club for those bereft at it's demise, endlessly replaying episodes to revisit those memorable lines such as 'after 3 minutes you'll be begging me to put you out after 6 minutes you'll be begging me to shoot you'. Or one of the many Catherine clocks it moments, my fave been when Lynn is going on about dog in't cellar and Catherine's eyes go darting from Lynn to cellar as she goes 'dog? What dog?' Shock

And what is the significance of Catherine leaving her reading glasses on the desk? Was there something in the rest of that episode she hasn't seen or read properly because she didn't have them with her? Or when she gets back to her office are they going to have mysteriously moved because Joyce has been snooping?

DH is binging S2 at the moment to catch up and in one of the episodes CC is leaving her office and runs back in to put her glasses on her desk. It seemed like foreshadowing but it's just her computer glasses. Details of everyday life!

And Joyce is just the colleague who'll always have a nosey over your shoulder at your screen if the opportunity's there. (I know this because it's also me)

the80sweregreat · 17/01/2023 17:52

Joyce did look a bit troubled at that computer screen !

EsmaCannonball · 17/01/2023 17:54

Right, I still think Ann and Daniel's remote house was introduced because an escaped TLR is going to end holed up there with an unwilling Ryan.

I think Richard is going to be at the court in his capacity as a journalist and is going to be killed trying to stop TLR from taking Ryan.

If Horrible PE Teacher is charged with Joanna's murder, he could also be at the court for his own plea hearing and become embroiled somehow. Unless .......

....... Faisal doesn't actually kill Joanna but uses his medical knowledge to save her life. (I think this is unlikely, but I'm having fun thinking of these things.)

EsmaCannonball · 17/01/2023 17:55

Oh, and I really like Joyce so I'm hoping she's not a baddy. Maybe the OCG are threatening her somehow?

Mintyt · 17/01/2023 18:21

If I remember correctly Joyce and Cathrine had a conversation about not being invited to Joyce's leaving do

EsmaCannonball · 17/01/2023 18:24

IIRC, Joyce said she didn't have a leaving do because she didn't actually leave. She went straight from being a police officer to being a police civilian worker.

What if she couldn't leave because the OCG were forcing her to carry on giving them information?

Joyce being a scheming baddy would be far too Line of Duty for me.

the80sweregreat · 17/01/2023 18:30

Why wouldn't Joyce invite her friend to her leaving do ?

I'm not convinced it's just a passing detail included for 'everyday' authenticity . The shot is a close-up of the glasses on the desk. I think that makes them significant unless it's a deliberate red herring. And, unless I've been missing them, HV doesn't seem to me to deal in red herrings. Maybe it's not significant in a big way but I think it must tie up with something. Otherwise why focus on them?

And Joyce wasn't just being a bit nosey in the background. Again there was a close-up of her face changing and reacting to what she was reading on the screen. It meant something to her and she looked stressed.

I don't think Catherine will die. Sally Wainwright tries to reverse tropes so her women are strong; the men are weak; the usually overlooked older women are the main characters etc. It would be too 'traditional' to kill her - hopefully! 🤞
But statistically Ryan's outcomes wouldn't be good. iirc he has a mum who took drugs and killed herself; two recovering alcoholics as role models and a dad who is a murderer and rapist, and in prison. And although Catherine loves him, she isn't around much and she's not been able to counter any of TLR's manipulations for the last 18 months. Ryan is so vulnerable and that makes me scared for him. Although can I just add I love his friend. Their conversations were so realistic 😃

Totally agree with all of this.

I did wonder (when Catherine's ex husband apologised to her for having left her alone after Becky had died) how might Ryan have turned out, with him around as a strong decent male role model. Catherine's son / Ryan's uncle was also struggling with Ryan's presence, so he wasn't much good during Ryan's formative years.

All such a sad situation.

fairypeasant · 17/01/2023 18:53

This isn't line of duty, everyone!

Chekhov's clutch is important. Ryan is just vulnerable. The dynamic with the abusive teacher has already been explained by Joanne- he finds these lads, breaks them, then gets his narc supply off making them teacher's pet.

Joyce is just Joyce - she reflects the audience. Loves Catherine, finds her infuriating, and noses at the screen so we get a look.

Pfizer is a gonner, but later. He will have killed Joanne. TLR is a manipulative shit- no redemption arc there. Tweedledum or Tweedledee will steal Alison's double declutch wagon, and mow down someone we care about. Richard is wet and useless- there's a theme of the strong but broken woman surrounded by these soggy marshmallows. There will be a tense finale, and Ryan and Catherine will go to the Himalayas.

XanaduKira · 17/01/2023 18:57

I agree @fairypeasant

WhoWants2Know · 17/01/2023 18:59

I don't totally hate Neil. I think he did a really stupid thing, but all of his interactions with Ryan are caring. Like because he was removed from his own kids, he wants to make it up somewhere.

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/01/2023 19:00

Rewatching s1&2. Have nothing else to do as in hospital with leg in cast and have WiFi so happy days with happy valley 😂

I don't R.E.M. the kiss - or maybe as been 7/8yrs since 1&2 I should have rewatched Before s3

And @PuttingDownRoots omg. So cheap. Amazing how diff areas can be so diff in prices - in south east sure that would be £500/600k depending if 3/4 bedroom

You mean like … like Clare? 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

IwantToRetire · 17/01/2023 19:04

I was just thinking about the recurring themes in Happy Valley, one of them being men who are out of their depth and blundering into trouble, or rather acts of violence against women.

If my memory serves me right, in the story line of the detective who murdered the woman he was having an affair with, and the chemist, they both snapped when the women concerned laughed at them.

What is that saying, men wory that women will laugh at them, women worry that men will kill them.

longtompot · 17/01/2023 19:05

From what I can tell with HV you are given all the info, and the characters, and you just need to put it in order. No one seems to come out of the woodwork, even with the OCG you know their name (and if you want a spoiler, you can see what they look like on the radio times website) so you can have a character pushed to the edge suddenly become the murderer. Most of them seem to have this though, being pushed to their limits, so really anyone can become a killer.
I love how the minutiae of their days isn't shown. Last series Catherine and Clare had a fall out where Catherine told her sister it was time for her to move out. The next episode, they were friends again.

the80sweregreat · 17/01/2023 19:14

Maybe Joyce has been buying some pills from the pharmacy that looks like a house ?
I knew a few people in my time who seemed to know dodgy people to buy slimming pills etc, but they were not in the police.
This was Long before the internet.
She might have relatives who wanted some.
Just a thought , but it might be she is just nosy and concerned that it's going on in the area
She was convinced that C had been to her leaving do too .. all very odd

the80sweregreat · 17/01/2023 19:21

Double declutch is definitely a Chekhov 's gun
Maybe one of the thugs who wears the horrible wet look , but expensive , coat tries to escape in the off roader and stalls it up a hill.

sweatervest · 17/01/2023 19:28

i am plot-lost tbh. pharmacy and killing that woman. hmmm. triangulation and phones and her yuck husband being at work though so he won't be charged with murder (said in my best taggart impersonation voice tbh)

also joyce should be busy booking catherine's retirement shindig. i would definitely go and help set up the tables before hand if joyce needs help.

i bumped into my estranged sibling and his kids (had never met the kids and they were 10 ish etc). i bent down to talk to them and i said "i'm your aunt" and it was totally TLR from season 1 when he said to ryan "i'm your dad" and it was years ago but i was literally just a tlr impersonator but without the handsomeness or the handsomeness.

also i love that programme and i wonder if halifax do a tourist bus thing where you can see bits where they did filming.
also surely sarah lancaster will be doing the sofas towards the end of the season??? like the one show and graham norton. come on, sazza. a jillion people on mumsnet await.

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/01/2023 19:30

Maybe jo isn't dead. That chemist didn't finish her off

Tho he has to or she will tell dh and he will beat the crap out of him

Woman don't usually die - yet the policewoman did who he ran over and Tommys Mum

Having time to ponder here

Glasses not sure what the relevance is

Joyce - def looks concerned at screen with address and name

Please don't let her do the dirty on Catherine. Bad enough claire has

Neil - totally not happy valley related - but he's in the pirate thing on bbc
