I think Ryan may kill TLR.
I hope not. It would mess him up. I hope he gets a good education and gets the fuck away from that place never to return.

I hate to be that person but it’s not gripping me as much as the previous series. We simply aren’t seeing enough of Catherine and her loved ones. What made HV so good was the real, genuine, believable dialogue between Catherine and her family. Tension at dinner etc. We’ve barely seen Catherine and Ryan interact.

The Knezevic’s storyline is boring me to tears, they are villians but you can’t even love to hate them or be gripped by watching them get taken down because we know nothing about them other than it’s a few unpleasant blokes who human traffic women and money launder. The pharmacist killing Jo in a fit of rage is far too similar to John Wadsworth killing Vicky Fleming last series and was predictable from a mile off. Feels like more male-on-female violence just for the sake of it.

We aren’t seeing enough of Tommy, he was fuming when Neil mentioned Catherine, why didn’t we see the aftermath when he went back to his cell?

The dark humor isn’t there, in previous series even with everything Catherine had going on we saw lighthearted moments, usually relating to Catherine’s jobs. There hasn’t been much of that in this series except right at the start. They tried to do it with the whole alien thing but it didn’t work, probably intentional to show that Catherine is having a breakdown though I guess.

We’re halfway through now and I feel like it hasn’t even gotten started.

My guess is the twist that TLR didn’t rape Becky, she had PND and that’s why she killed herself after having the baby. Catherine in her guilt (perhaps she feels she didn’t support her enough) and grief, looking for somebody to blame thought up the idea of Becky being raped as an explanation and ran away with it. Catherine has never actually said out loud that Becky admitted (feels the wrong word as Becky would be the victim…’admitted’ feels to accusatory but can’t think of a better word) to being raped. Just that “She couldn’t tell me because she thought I’d make her report it”, and “She didn’t tell me about the pregnancy because she was in denial” (she was 17, maybe she genuinely didn’t know the signs but Catherine just assumed she had been in denial).

Of course, we know from the Anne that TLR IS capable of rape, but it doesn’t necessarily mean he raped Becky. It may have been his stint in prison for drugs (post-Becky) that sent him that way.

Arghh I do agree with what you've put. And I also agree re Becky, TLR's (bloody gorgeous) face does seem to soften when she's mentioned. Like it did when he going out about Ryan and met him. Let's gloss over the whole petrol incident. I think it's credible and not a disservice to rape victims, that Catherine wants to blame someone. I can't begin to imagine the helpless despair she must have felt.

I think the forgiveness thing is going to be significant. Something is going to happen where forgiveness will be forthcoming. And what was the significance of Catherine leaving her glasses on her desk?

Oh yes I noticed the glasses... Did she get the Knezevic's number plate correctly? I was worried they were going to mow her down, a la poor Kirsten.
I need to rewatch obvs, it's like I'm studying for a bloody exam in it.

JaneJeffer · 16/01/2023 17:30

Those two hard men were quaking at the sight of the police. If they have anything to do with TLR's escape he's doomed Grin

That's a 5 isn't it?

Ignore me. It was my fat fingers

She got the number plate right

I was worried they were going to mow her down,

Have to say, knowing what happened to the poor policewoman, if I were another policewoman trying to catch criminals I wouldn’t be standing in the middle of the road to do so.

HRTQueen · 16/01/2023 17:35

I don’t think there shall be any forgiveness but I think Catherine is conflicted in her love for Ryan this is what shall be tested and she will realise she does love him unconditionally like she did her daughter

I couldn’t get on with the podcast either

Rhondaa · 16/01/2023 17:35

The knezevic's thugs were a bit obvious going round the block 3 times when 2 police vans visible. Surely the licence plates will be fakes anyway.

There was a clip where the bigger one in the maroon puffer gets thrown across a bonnet (or was he throwing someone else across a bonnet I'm not 100% sure now) either way so I'm not sure he'll be at his wedding on Wed..

MilkshakesBringAllTheCoosToTheYard · 16/01/2023 17:44

I'm expecting this wedding to be spectacular!

@Blondeshavemorefun : Please step down from traffic duty forthwith and return to base - via Specsavers!😉

I thought that too

If Sally Wainwright or anyone else involved in Happy Valley are on Mumsnet they're probably having a laugh at our predictions.

Interesting that other people also thought Ann looked different. I wondered if Charlie Murphy has had her nose 'fixed' a little bit (not that anything was wrong with her nose btw!)

I think it's just the fringe

XanaduKira · 16/01/2023 18:28

Completely agree @Emotionalsupportviper and @amaryllis134 - there's no way he's going to be any kind of decent guy. He's a narcissist and a murderer.

If he is broken out of prison on Wednesday, he'll want Ryan to go with him and when he doesn't, then he'll kill Ryan (or at least try to). Blooming hope he kills Neil! That I wouldn't mind!

EmilyDickinson · 16/01/2023 18:35

That court appearance is going to be busy. Ryan wants to be there, Neil is taking him, Richard will probably be there as a reporter. Anyone else?

Believers · 16/01/2023 18:39

Ok - this hit me today when I was cleaning the bathroom!

What if Joyce is related to Faisal, she sees the results on Catherine's desk and recognises Jo's address as being on the same road as Faisal's. Then she also sees (if it's on the lab result paperwork), that the diazepam came from Faisal's pharmacy. Then she hears that Jo has been murdered, and simultaneously hears from other family members that Faisal is acting strangely.

She starts putting two and two together and then - I don't know!

Catherine if she hears about it. She went to his mother's funeral.

ilovebrie8 · 16/01/2023 18:44

Something must happen at the wedding as the thug guy keeps mentioning he’s going married on Wednesday ! Lol 😂. Yeah I thought Catherine was in danger standing in the middle of the road thought they might try and run her down

Believers · 16/01/2023 18:51

ElfDragon · 16/01/2023 12:52

My first thought when I watched is that Joyce is connected in some way to the pharmacist. She saw something in the info, and seemed alarmed. I wonder if she is related to the pharmacy owner somehow - Faisal just manages the shops, doesn’t he, for his uncle (I think)?

re: Faisal and the air embolus, there was definitely quite a significant bit on how he always wanted more, to be a doctor, but couldn’t afford the training, so I’d guess he has either done partial training and dropped out, or extra training at some point which would give him the skills.

Just seen your post @ElfDragon! We're thinking along similar lines!

I understand that there is an excellent branch at Barnard Castle . . . 😄

Knock three times and tell them Dom sent you.

storminabuttercup · 16/01/2023 19:00

I don't think it'll come out that TLR didn't rape Becky, how can it? Becky must have told Catherine he did and there's no proving otherwise. I think he probably did love her, or think he did, in the same way neck beard will say he loved Jo and all other violent abusive men say their love the partners they beat and rape.

Exdpisatwat · 16/01/2023 19:07

If the real police every struggle with a whodunit mystery they should just post the case files here in telly addicts. Mumsnetters would have it solved in ten minutes.

duc748 · 16/01/2023 19:15

The real police can't even deal with the rapists in their ranks. 😕

jaicobain · 16/01/2023 19:31

Maybe the ending isn’t Catherine dying, but alienating her family and ending up alone (perhaps having a close friendship with Alison). I don’t agree with going behind Catherine’s back but I can see why Claire is frustrated. Catherine is so blinded by the trauma of Becky’s death (not her fault) that she cannot think rationally when it comes to Ryan. It’s clear Claire doesn’t think TLR is an angel or anything, she acknowledges he should never get out of prison, but I think she feels closure to the situation would be for Ryan to know TLR for himself, and hopefully be at peace with his relationship with his dad.

Catherine prefers to bury her head in the sand, and has spent years biting Ryan’s head off at any mention of TLR. It’s obvious why Ryan went to Neil and Claire for help.

It was awful of Catherine not to tell Ryan the truth, he’s not thick.

I think Claire wants everything out in the open with the Becky situation, she wants everybody to have closure and move on. But then Becky isn’t Claire’s daughter, she’s Catherine’s, and Catherine will never be able to have the idealistic closure that Claire wants.
