Agree with others that this didn't seem that strong an episode, apart from the start when Catherine and Clare were in the cafe.

Clare was torn between putting Neil first or Cahterine, and even though he had gone behind her back to arrange the first prison visit, she chose to cover this up (and they are bother scared of Catherine).

I think as others have suggest the OCG have somehow persuaded Neil to do this because this is their way of repaying TLR for owning up for something he didn't do. (And as others are now suggesting maybe an escape plan for the court date). And the way TLR spoke to Neil and he just took it made it seem he is the one being used.

I think Catherine when talking to Ryan on the doorstep wasn't as convincing in her just trust me when I say he is a bad person, and starting off with this evil isn't inherited is about her obsession re Ryan but struck no cord with him.

I think it was said in series one that Beck denied being raped but Catherine saw it as that. What I am not sure is if something happened after Ryan was born that made her suicidal or that she realised that TLR had no feelings for her. A lot of story is told from Catherine's view of the world.

I was quite touched that Catherine's son seemed to have sympathy for her after finding out about the prison visits and clearly the impact on Ann. In all our previous postings I dont think any of us thought about that.

And Catherine's cowardly husband admitting that he had been a shit to leave her to cope with adopting Ryan. I thought there might be one of those family gatherings, without Neil, Clare or Ryan, to work out what to do.

I was quite convinced by the chemist turning violent. He has got totally out of his depth with the OCG moning in on his small scale dealing. And then when he gets himself all physced up and prepared to get rid of the disgusting tearcher Jo lets on she's been lying. He was right on the edge and that pushed him over. Wonder if he did syringe her with an air bubble. And as the OCG had told him to get rid ofboth husband and wife how was he going to do that.

Apart from the talk between Catherine and Clare at the start, the part in the gym where the teacher was talking to Ryan really made my skin crawl. And somehow this relationship will be significant, maybe another wedge between Ryan and Catherine as she will be sure the husband is guilty and Ryan will defend him or give him an alibi. I thought how the schoolfriend let slip all the details was really well done, believable.

There will be a link with the raid on the house and Catherine (of course) has taken note of the car circling the block. And they are the ones threatening the chemist, so it will all link.

Did anyone recognise the actor who came to the house where the bundling criminals were and told them they had to kill the one who was holding the blind woman captive. That whole story line of the woman being taken advantage off by the men, and then trying to escape. When she was so vulnerable anyway because of being blind.

I am wondering now whether the ending will be Ryan getting killed because too late he realises just how evil TLR is, and that in some plot twist Catherine is in danger. Ryan thinks he's going to Spain with TLR but realises TLR isn't going to go without getting revenge on Catherine so Ryan attempts to alert her.

The closing scene will be Catherine sitting alone in her house, while up the road Neil and Clare are sad about TLR not being savable after all.

Did anyone else notice the doll on the table with it's head and face spattered in red paint? Those daughters are going to tell the police about daddy beating up mummy and he'll be banged up when TLR is transferred to the same place.

Unrelated but annoying point: there is no way that syringe was anywhere near large enough to administer a fatal air embolus, even assuming Faisal was able to competently administer an intravenous or intra-areterial injection, which I think is outwith the skillset of most pharmacists.

WinnieFosterReads · 15/01/2023 23:50

That's comforting to know. Just in case we ever fall out with our friend who is a pharmacist Grin

EdieLedwell · 15/01/2023 23:51

Catherine totally clocked Joyce clocking the information about Jo. That's definitely something

IlooklikeRonnieCorbett · 15/01/2023 23:52

I think there is some detail coming about Neil, what was the stuff about the newsagents and the phone?

EdieLedwell · 15/01/2023 23:53

"Did anyone recognise the actor who came to the house where the bundling criminals were and told them they had to kill the one who was holding the blind woman captive."

I can't figure out where from, but I definitely recognise him

MovedByFanciesThatAreCurled · 15/01/2023 23:53

I think Richard is definitely going to meet a sticky end. Tonight marked the end of his character arc across 3 series - from bastard husband who rejected Ryan to tearful confidante for Catherine. We (and Catherine) will feel more now when he is murdered.

dapsnotplimsolls · 15/01/2023 23:56

I recognised the actor too but not sure where from.

WouldJudasLeaveIt · 15/01/2023 23:58

I wonder if OCG fella's wedding will factor in somehow? It's been mentioned a couple of times now. It wouldn't surprise me if Joyce turns out to be corrupt somehow, her and Catherine haven't been as close as they were in season 1.

IwantToRetire · 15/01/2023 23:58

apparently his name is Anthony Flanagan and I am sure he has been in lots of things, but guess what, he was in Gentleman Jack.

He fed his Dad to the pigs in Gentleman Jack! 😁

I wondered if Nevison has a health issue. He had forgotten Ann had applied to CID.

I still think Ann could be pregnant and that the hangover was just a cover.

Will the sports teacher be framed for Jo's murder? He told Ryan about his unhappy marriage, which Ryan may later mention to Catherine.

Ryan is going to be the teachers alibi. The argument will be that the teacher couldn’t do it because he was at school. But he could have gone home at lunch time. However Ryan was with him and can be his alibi.

WeAreTheHeroes · 16/01/2023 00:04

I lost my post so apologies if it did post and this is a duplicate.

Ann looks like Jessie Buckley with her new haircut. Different jawline, but similar eyes. Poor woman, you feel for her.

It wasn't Ryan who told Neckbeard his personal problems, it was Cesco who has already proved he's not a good judge of character having failed to realise his own mother won't agree to putting Ryan up. Neckbeard's violence against Joanna will come out via the postmortem.

Neil has been compelled to take Ryan to see TLR, possibly to keep his job. TLR is grooming the pair of them for something for when he's spirited from court in Leeds on Tuesday. Could be as simple as Neil being his unwitting getaway driver. He wants revenge against Catherine though. He sees her as the reason he's inside and blames her for his mother's death. When the penny drops with Ryan that TLR has used him to get to Catherine he'll have to decide what to do.

I'm going to have to watch on iPlayer on my phone and pause the bit with the drugs to read the note. That reminds of watching LoD!

Ah thanks, that makes complete sense!

Pl242 · 16/01/2023 00:06

Is it possible that Faisal, having got way over his head (understatement) doubles down, waits for Neckbeard to return and kills him and tried to make it look like a murder/suicide?

colouringindoors · 16/01/2023 00:18

I have a horrible feeling Catherine won't survive this series. I wonder if Ryan will turn down TLR as he works out how toxic he is, TLR goes mental and Catherine will die saving Ryan. I really hope I'm wrong tbough.

HRTQueen · 16/01/2023 00:21

I think Neckbeard will have something to with Ryan getting more involved with Tommy. Tommy and Neckbeard have their anger towards Catherine in common

Neckbeard has already been humiliated by Catherine and will no doubt again as she will make it clear she thinks he is guilty of his wives murder. And we know our catherine doesn’t keep her thoughts to herself

could he end up in prison with Tommy

absolutelyincandescentwithrage · 16/01/2023 00:21

@Emotionalsupportviper I was just saying this about both Sarah Lancashire and Siobhan Finneran, it's so refreshing to see women in their mid/late fifties who haven't got a face full of fillers and obviously aren't pumped full of Botox.

LittleBowSheep · 16/01/2023 00:26

I did notice that Catherine left her computer screen unlocked when she left her office after reading the test results for the pills that Jo had been taking. If Joyce is involved then she can sneak back in to read it because all of the officers seemed to have gone out to help with the arrest.

Wingedharpy · 16/01/2023 00:52

I think as thanks/returning a favour, for Ryan providing alibi for creepy teacher re: wife's murder coinciding with their cosy chat time, it will be creepy teacher who takes Ryan to Leeds court to see TLR as neither Neil or Clare will take him because of everything that happened tonight.
I'm anticipating creepy teacher being killed in a kidnap attempt of Ryan.

The final scene of the series will surely be Catherine being called into the office by her boss and being suspended, pending investigation, for assault on the chap in the road who was crawling out of his trousers, the whole scene having been filmed by the person on the footpath.
She'll tell him he can suspend her all he likes but she's handing in her resignation as of now as she's retiring anyway.
The End.

foxlover47 · 16/01/2023 00:53

So obviously I am not a fan or Tommy but what if he genuinely is wanting a relationship with Ryan and is genuinely happy to be seeing him?
Yet he still hates Catherine as he sees her as being in the way to him being Ryan's dad sort of thing

Good point about the doll's head. It was very prominent in the shot and I thought it was just a device to highlight the horror of the beating we could see in the background. But I think you're right. The police will spot it, the girls will tell, the post mortem will confirm previous injuries and the teacher will be arrested and charged.
But I don't think we'll see him in prison with TLR. For a start he'd be on remand and I don't think they mix with high security prisoners? And it's looking like TLR is getting sprung on Tuesday? Unless they both end up at the same court on Tuesday. With Ryan.

Out of interest, how much air is needed for a fatal air embolism? It's a method used in one of Kate Atkinson's books and I've always wondered how realistic it is. And surely the puncture wound would be picked up in the post mortem?

Wingedharpy · 16/01/2023 00:57

Don't think so @foxlover47 .
I'm more inclined to think it's about using Ryan as a revenge pawn in his hatred of Catherine.
Hence the "revenge is a dish......." or whatever was said.

IwantToRetire · 16/01/2023 01:01

Forgot to add that even if the police dont get the 2 bungling criminals the crime bosses will because they lied about no money being removed from the flat where the blind woman died.

And forgot to post last week but reminded asmentioned in the Guardian series recap, Happy Valley was shown at the same time as the Harry interview. Guess which programme got the higher number of viewers?!

"Last week’s episode was scheduled against ITV’s Prince Harry interview, beating it in the ratings by more than a million. Yorkshire 1, Sussex 0." www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2023/jan/15/happy-valley-recap-series-three-episode-three-that-confrontation-scene-deserves-baftas
