I hate to be that person but it’s not gripping me as much as the previous series. We simply aren’t seeing enough of Catherine and her loved ones. What made HV so good was the real, genuine, believable dialogue between Catherine and her family. Tension at dinner etc. We’ve barely seen Catherine and Ryan interact.

The Knezevic’s storyline is boring me to tears, they are villians but you can’t even love to hate them or be gripped by watching them get taken down because we know nothing about them other than it’s a few unpleasant blokes who human traffic women and money launder. The pharmacist killing Jo in a fit of rage is far too similar to John Wadsworth killing Vicky Fleming last series and was predictable from a mile off. Feels like more male-on-female violence just for the sake of it.

We aren’t seeing enough of Tommy, he was fuming when Neil mentioned Catherine, why didn’t we see the aftermath when he went back to his cell?

The dark humor isn’t there, in previous series even with everything Catherine had going on we saw lighthearted moments, usually relating to Catherine’s jobs. There hasn’t been much of that in this series except right at the start. They tried to do it with the whole alien thing but it didn’t work, probably intentional to show that Catherine is having a breakdown though I guess.

We’re halfway through now and I feel like it hasn’t even gotten started.

My guess is the twist that TLR didn’t rape Becky, she had PND and that’s why she killed herself after having the baby. Catherine in her guilt (perhaps she feels she didn’t support her enough) and grief, looking for somebody to blame thought up the idea of Becky being raped as an explanation and ran away with it. Catherine has never actually said out loud that Becky admitted (feels the wrong word as Becky would be the victim…’admitted’ feels to accusatory but can’t think of a better word) to being raped. Just that “She couldn’t tell me because she thought I’d make her report it”, and “She didn’t tell me about the pregnancy because she was in denial” (she was 17, maybe she genuinely didn’t know the signs but Catherine just assumed she had been in denial).

Of course, we know from the Anne that TLR IS capable of rape, but it doesn’t necessarily mean he raped Becky. It may have been his stint in prison for drugs (post-Becky) that sent him that way.

I hear you, hopefully this episode was just a blip!

So, we have the court hearing and the OCG-serf wedding to come?

The Faisal and Joanna thing seemed a mite unlikely.

But (aside from Catherine and Ryan and the reheating of stew) I’m mostly thinking about Daniel and Ann’s amazingly beautiful house …

I think Nevison may have helped with the deposit on that 😉

itsnotmeitisactuallyyou · 15/01/2023 23:20

Faisal cant walk in a straight line without falling over, will he able to finish her off

Yeah I was thinking exactly the same..Will the Kenevs break TLR out in Leeds and will Ryan get taken?

Maybe Ryan will continue to see and defend TLR, Catherine will fully disown him. Ryan then gets kidnapped by the Knezivic’s (on TLR’s orders after he escapes from prison, so that Tommy can take him to Spain? It’s notable that TLR seems to genuinely believe he’ll get to go skydiving etc with Ryan, they made a point of that), Catherine finds out, is part of the rescue operation realises she can’t lose all she has left of her daughter. Ryan is rescued (with TLR potentially killed), Catherine is relieved to have him back and finally tells Ryan the truth about TLR and Becky (this conflicts with my previous theory that TLR didn’t rape Becky, but I actually prefer this new theory) and Ryan realises what TLR is really like. They make up and realise how much they mean to each other, and agree to go on the Himalaya’s trip together and put TLR behind them.

I wondered why Catherine didn't stop the OCG oiks at the scene, she clearly clocked them. As for the court appearance, as Sherlock would say, the game's afoot!

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/01/2023 23:23

Ah right @WhoWants2Know / thanks

Could he be from an affair years ago before he got married

Grapes at straws

I can't see why either would help Tommy esp as all the grief he's done for their family

Someone said why didn't he ask his uncle - but tbh he hasn't shown him any love or attention. Or even like him in s1

And

Why did someone ask if Ann was preg - have I missed that

PriamFarrl · 15/01/2023 23:26

Why did someone ask if Ann was preg - have I missed that

the being sick. Women are only sick in dramas if they are pregnant.

foxlover47 · 15/01/2023 23:27

@Blondeshavemorefun I thought they asked because she was being sick in the toilet but she said she got drunk the night before .. hunk she drinks to cope with the trauma of TLR doesn't she

duc748 · 15/01/2023 23:28

Raggletaggles · 15/01/2023 22:39

Agree… why would he tell Rob ANYTHING let alone his personal family life after how abusively his teacher has behaved.
but @duc748 TLR poured petrol on Ryan not Catherine- planning to commit a murder-suicide.

Ah, thanks for that @Raggletaggles

It's not the basis of a beautiful relationship, though, is it? 😀

foxlover47 · 15/01/2023 23:28

That Faisal can't even walk a country lane he's such a nervous Nelly

EmilyDickinson · 15/01/2023 23:29

Why did someone ask if Ann was preg - have I missed that

Because Ann was throwing up in the toilets at work. Ann said she’d been drinking because the business with Ryan and TLR had brought back her kidnapping and rape.

I liked how when the police went into the house Ann touched the coffee cup to see if it was warm and it was so she knew the man they were seeking had only just left the room.

midsomermurderess · 15/01/2023 23:29

I think the forgiveness thing is going to be significant. Something is going to happen where forgiveness will be forthcoming. And what was the significance of Catherine leaving her glasses on her desk?

Probably far too idealistic and happy ending for the likes of Happy Valley, but this is what I’d choose for Catherine and Ryan! She deserves a break.

Why was Joyce interested in the lab results for the pills when she was in Catherine's office? I couldn't read what was on the screen or the handwritten note on the paperwork. And then she bumped into Catherine just outside her office as if she was distracted by whatever she'd seen. Or maybe hanging around to go back in for another look.

YY we were wondering that too. We were watching a few minutes behind so paused to read the paperwork. It was basically only the PE teacher's wife's name and address, and it said the pills were Benzodiazepine - which is what PE teacher's wife had said it was. Maybe Joyce recognised her name? Or maybe Joyce took the pills - because Catherine just folded it over and put it in her desk without checking when she came back into the office.

I think the Faisal storyline works. It's the same as the others in S1 and S2. Yy they are weak men who get in over their heads but they are also loathe to take responsibility, proud and have vicious streaks. He'd been trying to spare Jo after the OCG saying he had to deal with her and her husband but then realised he couldn't trust her because she kept changing her story and then pushed him.

Catherine seems to have PTSD - seeing Becky everywhere when she's stressed is a symptom of PTSD.

Oh god, if Joyce turns out to be the Happy Valley equivalent of H that will be a step too far. The OCG knew about a woman who had been arrested over diazepam and that she and her husband knew too much. Maybe they've asked Joyce to keep an eye out for an address. Maybe the reason Joyce didn't completely retire from police work is because the OCG won't let her.

(Please don't let any of the above be true because it would be far too silly. Even worse than aliens trying to phone home mistakenly laser-beaming TLR up to the planet Vulcan via his arse phone.)

foxlover47 · 15/01/2023 23:32

Also his scar is healing well now isn't it !
Also them two young thugs are clearly lying that they took no money from that flat as he had two bags on cctv ( think it was 2 )

WinnieFosterReads · 15/01/2023 23:35

Maybe Joyce took the pills and because they're lost the case against Jo will fall apart and Faisal will realise he didn't need to kill her after all.

EmilyDickinson · 15/01/2023 23:36

Joyce seemed shaken by seeing Joanna’s drug report on Catherine’s screen. Is Joanna a relative or is Joyce mixed up with the supply of drugs? Is that going to be part of a larger story about police and council corruption?

Rollergirl11 · 15/01/2023 22:25

Are the Kneževićs going to break TLR out when he’s in court in Leeds on Tuesday?

I reckon so. And I reckon he'll take our Ryan as a hostage.

What an hour, feel like I haven't breathed!

I think the writer isn't a fan of AA - which is where I think Claire's forgiveness model comes from.

EsmaCannonball · 15/01/2023 23:38

Hmm, Jo said she'd lost contact with her parents because horrible PE teacher didn't like them. Could Joyce be her mother? It wasn't picked up at the police station because of the different surnames?

Maybe we are all reading too much into it?

WhoWants2Know · 15/01/2023 23:40

I think Faisal may become a bit more than a hapless pawn before the end of the series. He's been low-key running a drugs business that has begun to encroach on the Knezovic's, and managed to attract enough attention that they worked out it was him.

They just lost a massive amount of money and one of their safe houses when the woman jumped out the window, as well as the lad who was arrested. They're going to be keen to make up for their losses, and I think they will force him to work for them.

TwoDrifters2 · 15/01/2023 23:42

Do we think Catherine may be getting back together with her ex?! They’ve clearly never stopped loving one another.
