Neil was loathsome anyway but watching TLR sneer horribly ‘who?’ when he mentions Catherine, and Neil replying ‘sorry’, made me utterly furious at him and actually at Ryan too. Whatever they think about her efforts to keep Ryan from Tommy, they both know she’s raised him pretty much single-handedly and loves him fiercely, complex and imperfect as she might be.

OMG @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g that is so not a ginnel 🫣

Hmmm, for the first ever time in 3 series I'm not entirely sure this week. It all seems to have gone a bit silly, and I say that as an absolutely enormous fan.

I agree maybe cos I feel I've seen it all before and it's going over old ground.
But I generally saw it coming with the girl being murdered and wish she hasn't. Saw it coming a mile off as soon as he turned up.

What if it all goes a bit Line of Duty and ends up with TLR being abducted by aliens?

Is the alien stuff a bit of background silliness or could it be something to do with drones practising dropping weapons for a prison break on the way to court, or helicopters rehearsing where and how to pick TLR up from the prison convoy? (Far-fetched, I know. But fun to think of these things.)

When I watched the first series of Happy Valley, the 'hapless, weak man stumbling into a series of crimes' trope reminded me strongly of Fargo; both the film and the Martin Freeman character in the television series.

I was thinking about Fargo tonight with all the alien chat!

Haha me too!
Does anyone know if the actor who plays Ann G has been re cast ,it looks like her but doesnt if that makes sense

When we first saw Ann in the CID room I didn’t realise it was her to begin with. The hair cut coupled with weight loss makes her look really different I think.

Is it Alison?

Yes, thank you.

These were my exact words to DH as soon as the episode finished.

Loved the 'secondary' plots in series 1 and 2 but really not feeling clumsy pharmacist guy. I was actually bored at one point and I wait obsessively for Happy Valley every week.

Feeling a bit 🤷‍♀️ about this episode, sadly.

Me too, worst episode yet imo.

Yes, surely the reaction to just the mention of Catherine's name should tell Neil that TLR is neither changed nor reformed. The fact that he is clearly scared of TLR should also tell him something. And bloody Claire! Can't withstand TLR's presence herself but somehow it's ok to expose Ryan to him. Grrrr!

Is it a snicket? My Yorkshire is a bit hazy.

WouldJudasLeaveIt · 15/01/2023 22:59

Bit disappointed with this episode really. I'm glad Neil isn't TLR's dad. I don't believe Claire would have betrayed Catherine like that. Neil is an absolute drip.
Horrible to see abused Jo beaten like that.
Hope it all comes together for the last 3 episodes.

TitsInAbsentia · 15/01/2023 22:59

Ryan visiting TLR is def somewhere related to crime gangs (the coneheadzowitches...I'd need to go back a few pages to get the proper name!) - Claire said that Neil had taken Ryan on his own first and it didn't seem she'd known about it?

Not been re-cast - played by Charlie Murphy in all three seasons.

You lot all know that the whole thing with the police officer and the alien in Todmodon is ‘real’ don’t you? Well, the policeman thought it was real anyway.

Here we go. The Todmorden UFO mystery. www.history.co.uk/articles/the-todmorden-ufo-mystery-a-close-encounter-in-west-yorkshire

jibbe · 15/01/2023 23:05

This episode felt a bit of a let down and another murder in the mix feels a bit overkill

Believers · 15/01/2023 23:07

Neil is repulsive and loathsome and has a horrible voice! What on earth does Clare see in him?! I thought Catherine was very restrained in the cafe, wouldn't have blamed her if she'd lost it big time. I'm also hoping that there's a big reckoning coming Neil's way from Catherine, she seems to have let him off lightly so far.

Sarah Lancashire is just fantastic. The scene outside the cafe where she saw Becky had me in tears. She must have felt so completely betrayed by Clare and Ryan - after all she's done for them, that's how they repay her <channeling my mother there!>

Something is obviously going to go down in Leeds at TLR's court appearance. Can only imagine an escape is on the cards, and Ryan is going to be involved in some way. But then Ryan is integral to the grooming plot line too (I imagine) so not sure how that's going to play out. It was odd seeing TLR being all pleased to see him and nicey-nicey and happy!

And I still maintain that there's something dodgy about Richard!

Definitely not a ginnel, or a snicket - someone needs to brush up on their Yorkshire.

Just looked like a footpath (possibly official) along the back of the houses between end of gardens and a field.

jaicobain · 15/01/2023 23:10

I hate to be that person but it’s not gripping me as much as the previous series. We simply aren’t seeing enough of Catherine and her loved ones. What made HV so good was the real, genuine, believable dialogue between Catherine and her family. Tension at dinner etc. We’ve barely seen Catherine and Ryan interact.

The Knezevic’s storyline is boring me to tears, they are villians but you can’t even love to hate them or be gripped by watching them get taken down because we know nothing about them other than it’s a few unpleasant blokes who human traffic women and money launder. The pharmacist killing Jo in a fit of rage is far too similar to John Wadsworth killing Vicky Fleming last series and was predictable from a mile off. Feels like more male-on-female violence just for the sake of it.

We aren’t seeing enough of Tommy, he was fuming when Neil mentioned Catherine, why didn’t we see the aftermath when he went back to his cell?

The dark humor isn’t there, in previous series even with everything Catherine had going on we saw lighthearted moments, usually relating to Catherine’s jobs. There hasn’t been much of that in this series except right at the start. They tried to do it with the whole alien thing but it didn’t work, probably intentional to show that Catherine is having a breakdown though I guess.

We’re halfway through now and I feel like it hasn’t even gotten started.

My guess is the twist that TLR didn’t rape Becky, she had PND and that’s why she killed herself after having the baby. Catherine in her guilt (perhaps she feels she didn’t support her enough) and grief, looking for somebody to blame thought up the idea of Becky being raped as an explanation and ran away with it. Catherine has never actually said out loud that Becky admitted (feels the wrong word as Becky would be the victim…’admitted’ feels to accusatory but can’t think of a better word) to being raped. Just that “She couldn’t tell me because she thought I’d make her report it”, and “She didn’t tell me about the pregnancy because she was in denial” (she was 17, maybe she genuinely didn’t know the signs but Catherine just assumed she had been in denial).

Of course, we know from the Anne that TLR IS capable of rape, but it doesn’t necessarily mean he raped Becky. It may have been his stint in prison for drugs (post-Becky) that sent him that way.

MetaDaughter · 15/01/2023 23:12

So, we have the court hearing and the OCG-serf wedding to come?

The Faisal and Joanna thing seemed a mite unlikely.

But (aside from Catherine and Ryan and the reheating of stew) I’m mostly thinking about Daniel and Ann’s amazingly beautiful house …

UrsulaPandress · 15/01/2023 23:12

Just the back lane to me.

The Uncanny podcast covers it quite extensively in the case 3 episode and again in case 8.

Did anyone else notice that the Alien Lifeform Liaison Officer was also known as ALLO.

PriamFarrl · 15/01/2023 23:15

I knew a podcast had covered it, but I couldn’t remember which one.

MrsDoylesApron · 15/01/2023 23:16

Why was Joyce interested in the lab results for the pills when she was in Catherine's office? I couldn't read what was on the screen or the handwritten note on the paperwork. And then she bumped into Catherine just outside her office as if she was distracted by whatever she'd seen. Or maybe hanging around to go back in for another look.

PrincessScarlett · 15/01/2023 23:17

School and Ryan will be Rob's alibi. Maybe Rob will lure Ryan in further with the dead wife woe. That's if Faisal actually goes ahead and uses the syringe.
