Shows Cancelled Before They Are Finished

I might be feeling a bit ranty but is anyone else sick of starting to watch a show, that has been written as a milti-season story with a long range arc - only to then be cancelled after 1 or 2 seasons and so left open ended? No proper conclusion or closure.

I'm starting to resist starting any new series unless I KNOW there is a proper ending or unless several seasons have already been filmed/it is an old series.

Dangerous Liasons, Becoming Elizabeth, 1899, The Midnight Club, Sense8. It's starting to drive me mad.

GLOW, Santa Clarita Diet and The OA for me. I need closure!

Letsnotargue · 04/01/2023 20:26

Pan Am. I loved that show.

and Flash Forward, although I was already getting a bit confused. I’d like to see a quick couple of paragraphs summary of an ending just for closure.

Mozart in the Jungle! So annoyed about that one left hanging like that.. the rule should be that shows are given one more season to wrap things up.

This has been withdrawn by MNHQ.

Yes!!

Masters of Sex was one of the first victims of this callous approach to series production. I loved that show and it was awful that it never got a proper ending.

Last Man on Earth. It had infinite storylines!

AinmÁlainn · 04/01/2023 20:39

Veronica Mars. And then the fan supported film/reboot season just didn't live up to the first three seasons.

Purpleavocado · 04/01/2023 20:41

Also the endings of Buffy and Angel were terrible when they were cancelled.
I'm annoyed that I wasted time on 1899 and now won't get any conclusions.

SecretVictoria · 04/01/2023 20:42

Alcatraz, very interesting premise and then just cancelled.

A show called Rescue Me with Sally Phillips about her trying to rebuild her marriage after she had an affair. Loved it, but it seems no one else did!

Warrior Nun Sad

Home fires which I loved

And the ghost time travel thing on BBC

I love this show so much! No one has ever heard of it!

Toomanybooks22 · 04/01/2023 20:46

ITV did that to Whitechapel too

The last series of Buffy was the worst one. I'd rewatch the rest but the last one I can take or leave. Shame

IWannaBeInTheRoomWhereItHappens · 04/01/2023 20:47

I'm absolutely gutted about 1899. I thought it was the best series I'd seen in a long time. It was intelligent, intriguing, beautifully produced. I'm so pissed off with Netflix for cancelling another show that isn't super populist and actually has some substance. FFS, to cancel that and keep churning out dross like Emily in Paris? I'm really cross about this one as I loved Dark by the same writers and so need to know where the story goes.

IrmaGord · 04/01/2023 20:49

The Midnight Club was a self contained limited series though, like The Haunting of Hill House. I don't think there was supposed to be a sequel.

woodhill · 04/01/2023 20:49

Versaille was good and the series on C4 about British empire in India with Julie Walters

Soubriquet · 04/01/2023 20:49

The Shanara Chronicles is another I’m upset about them cancelling

BigFatLiar · 04/01/2023 20:49

Crusade (spin off from babylon 5) I was enjoying it

Indian summers. I liked that one too.

Lifesyoungdream · 04/01/2023 20:50

I have just watched Shantaram on Apple TV apparently they are not making another series. The first series ended as if there would be one.
Wished I hadn’t bothered watching.
I must admit Charlie Hunnam trying to do an Australian accent was probably the reason why it was cancelled It was painful to listen to 😀

beachhutenvy · 04/01/2023 20:50

Dirty Sexy Money with Donald Sutherland.

I loved it!

I was devastated when GLOW was cancelled.

SnowdroppersUnite · 04/01/2023 20:52

Yes, Shantaram was another one I meant to list in my OP.

It just feels like such a waste of time when they end without ending.
