Shows Cancelled Before They Are Finished

I might be feeling a bit ranty but is anyone else sick of starting to watch a show, that has been written as a milti-season story with a long range arc - only to then be cancelled after 1 or 2 seasons and so left open ended? No proper conclusion or closure.

I'm starting to resist starting any new series unless I KNOW there is a proper ending or unless several seasons have already been filmed/it is an old series.

Dangerous Liasons, Becoming Elizabeth, 1899, The Midnight Club, Sense8. It's starting to drive me mad.

Survivors. Stopped on a cliffhanger with Max Beesley jumping on a plane. So annoyed about that still.

Glow - such a brilliant programme

TheGirlWhoLived · 04/01/2023 21:18

My worst were Trinity which I thoroughly enjoyed back in 2009, and the more recent Kettering Incident which randomly just stops

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 04/01/2023 21:24

I'm hoping Three Pines is going to have a second season, I enjoyed it.

Also gutted about Firefly, that could have run and run. They did a very good tidy up with the film Serenity, but also killed off a lot of my favourite people.

Future Man - it was a sci-fi comedy that was a funny, easy watch. Very quoteable too. Cancelled! We were gutted.

Home fires which I loved

And the ghost time travel thing on BBC

Home fires was so good, I was annoyed for ages about that!

Whatwouldscullydo · 04/01/2023 21:26

Aquarius could have done with another season. It just kinda ended.

Dollhouse. All that build up so much potential then a really weird futuristic final episode that didn't tie things up as hoped.

Roswell. Would have been nice to conclude things properly as opposed to everyone just basically leaving.

Smallville. Strong start. Weird boring middle. Another word futuristic finale that felt rushed and left much unanswered.

Code black. Would have just loved more seasons

@woodhill what's the ghost time travel thing?

I love this show so much! No one has ever heard of it!

I loved this too! Gutted it ended so suddenly! My husband and I even paid for the final series on whichever service it was on IIRC 😂

Alcatraz, very interesting premise and then just cancelled.

A show called Rescue Me with Sally Phillips about her trying to rebuild her marriage after she had an affair. Loved it, but it seems no one else did!

I'm still annoyed about Alcatraz. I watched it when I fed my youngest, and we were just left hanging!

They never even got as far as writing the scripts, so there is literally nothing to explain the time travel stuff. Nothing. I emailed the production company (I might have been a bit overtired on a 4am feed)

Kingdom with Stephen Fry.... The dramatic end with the flood and then they cancelled a fourth series.... I was very sad!!!

Glow
The last man on earth and the shanara chronicles for me. I'm at the point where I just won't invest time in a half story so wait until there's at least two if not three seasons or it's a self declared standalone.

As a result of this policy, I am now permanently behind the times. For instance at the minute the Wednesday craze is dying off but nonetheless I'm not watching. An older example of a number 1 thy everyone for a bit was talking about is the sandman. Firefly lane. Lots of examples of hits that I have yet to watch. Such a shame, I remember a time before marvel/got when series and films has an end and weren't always set to cliff hang, and frankly I'd rather that than this. Now everyone is chasing the 7-10 seasons, a sequel and prequel, and it's resulted in stories not being complete. Three seasons used to be considered a good run!
Buffy is a good example of this- the early series all had an "end"- yes there was a tempter, a hope for renew, but the main story was told and wrapped. That just doesn't happen now. Which leaves for a very unfulfilling watch

CoffeeBoy · 04/01/2023 21:31

The Papergirls
the OA

what was that programme where dead birds were falling from the skies, I think some people all around the world had either disappeared for a bit or fallen asleep simultaneously for a bit and it was the aftermath of the investigation into why it had happened. Was really interesting and then nothing.

PuppyMonkey · 04/01/2023 21:31

I can’t believe they cancelled Mindhunters, it’s infuriating that it just stopped like that.Angry

CurbsideProphet · 04/01/2023 21:33

Brothers and Sisters. It was cancelled and didn't have a proper ending. I've seen it recommended on here but what's the point if it just stops randomly 😏

There was a series about WWI nurses called Crimson Fields that just stopped after 1 series. I really enjoyed it and was so annoyed.

Humans - I would have loved to find out what happened

I miss Humans. Was gutted when it ended!

EleanorRavenclaw · 04/01/2023 21:37

The Strain although I only ever met one other person who watched it so could explain why it was cancelled 🤣. Had a great cast though and it was utterly bonkers. Also like pp Survivors is an itch that needs scratching.

Gooseysgirl · 04/01/2023 21:37

The Hour (1950s BBC drama with a great cast) cancelled after two seasons due to drop in viewing figures. We really enjoyed it and were disappointed when it was shelved.

CoffeeBoy · 04/01/2023 21:38

Have googled , it was Flash Forward I was thinking of, with the dead birds.

BubziOwl · 04/01/2023 21:38

I will always be furious that they cancelled The OA!

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 04/01/2023 21:38

Away

thoroughly enjoyed it, sad there’s no other episodes

NancyJoan · 04/01/2023 21:41

The Last Post was so good, I was really sad it didn’t get recommissioned.

Loved The Hour. So well done.

spiderlight · 04/01/2023 21:42

Santa Clarita Diet and Pushing Daisies were the worst for me. We're ten minutes into the first 1899 (paused so DH can ferry some teenagers home) - worried now! Is it better to cut our losses?

Bigbadfish · 04/01/2023 21:43

Any show on Netflix I start enjoying.

I hope those at Netflix who keep cancelling the shows I love get syphilis
