Shows Cancelled Before They Are Finished

I might be feeling a bit ranty but is anyone else sick of starting to watch a show, that has been written as a milti-season story with a long range arc - only to then be cancelled after 1 or 2 seasons and so left open ended? No proper conclusion or closure.

I'm starting to resist starting any new series unless I KNOW there is a proper ending or unless several seasons have already been filmed/it is an old series.

Dangerous Liasons, Becoming Elizabeth, 1899, The Midnight Club, Sense8. It's starting to drive me mad.

Recently rewatched the blast from the past Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Lost World.

It’s the steepest cliffhanger I’ve ever seen.

ElegantlyTouched · 12/01/2023 13:53

Two old ones:

The House of Eliott as a PP mentioned. It was suddenly cancelled so the writer tried to wind the story up but that just resulted in the protagonists acting against their character.

Mulberry Days, the premises of which was that the son of Death was on his first assignment, to accompany an elderly lady to the Other Side. What should be straightforward is complicated by the fact he likes her and doesn't want to take her away from her life, so keeps coming up with excuses. They did two series and the third was planned which would have ended with him leading her off happily, but, alas, it never made it to production.

Was watching on horror Channel- The Prisoner. It just sort of ended though I'm not sure they really had any idea of where the series was going, did enjoy it though.

There was an American remake which just wasn't the same.

I'm still bitter about Perfect Harmony being cancelled just as it was finding its feet - I'll never know what happened to Arthur and Adams 😭

Maerchentante · 12/01/2023 21:29

There was a show 15-20 years ago called Fastlane, lasted only one season.

It was about undercover cops in LA who had access to a vast store house with luxury cars and other high end items (IIRC).
Ended with a massive cliff hanger when one of the cops was abducted and injected with drugs, to which she was previously addicted.

Would have loved to see a second series of that.

You, me and the Apocalypse is one that I loved but nobody else even watched!

Yes yes yes! Left on a cliffhanger and Rob Lowe being totally brilliant.

Survivors. Stopped on a cliffhanger with Max Beesley jumping on a plane. So annoyed about that still.

This I loved it and really wanted it to continue.

Do you mean the Prisoner remake with Ruth Wilson on ITV?

That's the one, in the desert. Just seemed to lack something, though the original was wierd (which did help).

BigFatLiar · 13/01/2023 09:19

As an aside, relating to The Prisoner, do you remember Bester would use the 'be seeing you' sign fro the prisoner in Babylon 5.

It lacked Portmeirion! The village really made the show

Cattenberg · 13/01/2023 09:23

Survivors, starring Julie Graham, Max Beesley and Paterson Joseph. The second series ended on a cliffhanger, then the third series was cancelled.

ellebelli · 13/01/2023 10:28

Does anyone remember the original surviours though?
It was on an island and they had to complete tasks then by campfire(for dramatic effect)they would all put names into a box and then they would reveal who left
I only remember a Welsh girl being one of the contestants.
I loved it and bought the book they released afterwards☺️
It must be nearly 20yrs ago now!

Soubriquet · 13/01/2023 10:44

Remembered a couple more.

Dare
Brand New Cherry Flavour

Think so, yes. They had 'tribes' who were pitted against each other for rewards, and a tribal council.

I am gutted that they have cancelled Victoria. A third season was meant to happen. Then they said it was postponed due to covid. Then it got cancelled.

Can't believe the midnight clubs been cancelled.

I didn't know that about Victoria .Admittedly, although I watched both seasons, I had forgotten about it until you mentioned it just now... Grin

I wondered if it was because Albert died as he was ill when it finished

MzLucky · 14/01/2023 10:21

@woodhill Albert had an illness but not the one that ended him. He still had years to go before he died. We could have had at least another three series Grin

@DameHelena sorry for bringing you this sad news Grin

woodhill · 14/01/2023 10:27

Yes

I have to admit I thought that illness was the end of him

Perhaps writers thought it would be too depressing

MzLucky · 14/01/2023 14:11

Maybe as she did go into mourning for years. They could have wrote in Mr Brown.

Oh well it's not to be.

BlindyPeakers · 14/01/2023 19:27

Versailles has been cancelled? That was fabulous in every way.

GLOW was the worst one for me as I came late to the party and binged in on Netflix and was left hanging unexpectedly after the last episode 😭😮
