Matt Lucas to leave GBBO. Hallelujah!

Sky news reporting tonight that Matt Lucas says he doesn't have time for GBBO anymore, which IMO means he's been asked to leave as he completely unfunny and utterly annoying.

I cannot bear his puerile "antics" on GBBO and am at a loss why he was ever appointed or indeed why he has a reputation for being amusing. He has been the worst part of the show for the last three years.

I wonder who they will get in. Really needs to be female to balance it up.

Yes it makes you realise why Mel and Sue are/were so great - it's a subtle skill they had to be amusing but not over the top, to centre the contestants and be genuinely supportive to them while still having personalities and not being dull. Sue a bit nerdy and offbeat, Mel very relatable and witty and a bit maternal. A good pairing bounce off each other too.

EsmeShelby · 07/12/2022 11:01

I'm so glad. I can't watch it with him on.

EsmeShelby · 07/12/2022 11:08

Romesh is a vegan so he isn't likely.

BatCheeseIsFine · 07/12/2022 11:10

Tom Cruise 😂

As long as it's not Tom Allen. I've stopped watching Extra Slice because of him and have to run off any show or radio programme he appears on.

He's the one person that would stop me watching it.

Ditto. I came on to make this exact comment. Can't bear him.

I'd hope it would be a woman too. Agree that Ellie Taylor or Jennifer Saunders would be great.

Matildahoney · 07/12/2022 11:17

I'm another one glad to see the back of him! And also with Noel would go too, the pair of them are not funny at all

CheeseIsMyPatronus · 07/12/2022 10:02

Matt Lucas was dreadful, good riddance.

It needs to be a woman, and someone with warmth. Also someone who thinks baking has value, rather than just capering around finding themselves funny.

Stacey Solomon, maybe? Andi Oliver? Susan Calman?

Ooh Andi Oliver would be amazing!!!

I know she's capable of being a judge but I think her know-how would make her an asset as a presenter, rather than being oblivious to how to bake. Also, she does an incredible job as the presenter on The Great British Menu - she's really supportive but knowledgeable.

I also think that Andi has a lovely combination of gentle humour and warmth, and I could see her working well next to Noel.

PorkPieForStarters · 07/12/2022 11:34

Honestly, some of the comments I've read on here, Facebook and Instagram about him leaving and throughout his programmes have been disgusting. He may be a public figure but he's a person, he has feelings, he's trying to do a job that he's been hired to do. Just because someone isn't to your taste doesn't mean it's ok to be cruel about them. If leaving is his choice, I'm not surprised he's had enough.

If someone was writing those things about a child, it would be called bullying.

mondaytosunday · 07/12/2022 11:43

I like Matt better than Noel, so I'm sorry to see him go (didn't like Mel and Sue at all). Nadiya would be far too sincere - you need someone with a bit of wry wit. Jenny Eclair would be good, think French is too famous.

100%!! I love Jo Brand but I cannot stand Tom Allen, what do people see in him? I really don't understand why people like his bitchy persona.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 07/12/2022 12:30

Not a massive Matt Lucas fan but I'd have been more please to hear Leith and Hollywood had been given the shove.

Whole show needs a major shakeup. The snippets I saw of the series just gone were a poor imitation of earlier series.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 07/12/2022 12:34

lol at someone thinking Phoebe Waller-Bridge would be interested in chatting about savoury muffins to Natasha from London and Steve from Hull. I think Pheebs might have slightly bigger fish to fry!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 07/12/2022 08:43

Somebody who actually seems like they enjoy cake would be a good start. Matt and Noel don't seem to really like baking, Mel and Sue were always hovering around hoping for offcuts/wonky biscuits to try!

Miranda Hart?

I'm now enjoying this idea. Though I think in reality having someone where a big part of their stick is, "Look at me, I'm so clumsy," might cause issues.

nowgoingout · 07/12/2022 12:45

C4 will already have made a decision and hired someone before they fired Matt Lucas (and I do believe, as a TV insider, that he was fired).

I hope they've realised the folly of their ways in trying to narrow the field to only comedians; I hope they've realised it needs to be someone female but also someone warm, encouraging, interested in baking and not someone who is just their wanting to increase their screen time. Unfortunately there are not many presenters like that, male or female!

I'd be looking to recruit from the world of radio personally, or TV news/current affairs/consumer TV. There are multiple talented, warm, clever, engaging female presenters in that field who would jump at the chance for the promotion that GBBO would bring. Eg Mishal Hussain.

What a foul, awful OP! I find it just disgusting. Since when did people think it OK to chat publically (or privately for that matter) about someone?

I really like him, liked him and Noel together as a duo and am sorry to see him go.

You seem to assume everyone feels the same as you OP? Don't make a twit of yourself by doing that.

Hahaha! You've missed the point completely that TV presenters, by the nature of the fact that they have accepted highly lucrative contracts to present a programme to millions of people, can and will be judged by the audience on how good a job they're doing. Indeed that's the whole point when C4 decided to appoint someone funny; they hoped he would connect with the audience and make them laugh. In fact he's been exposed as a puerile childish idiot who made his fame on the back of being extremely nasty about other people who didn't have the voice to fight back eg on Little Britain his parodies of gay people, disabled people and people living in poverty.

But interesting to see you on here as Matt's one and only fan so far. What will you be doing next Matt, now you've been fired? Biscuit

Some of these new presenter suggestions are making me laugh!

Do you honestly think mega stars French & Saunders, Joanna Lumley, Romesh, Miranda Hart, would be interested in presenting bake-off? It's kind of a B-list celeb job isn't it?

LindorDoubleChoc · 07/12/2022 12:59

I suggest you actually read your own thread and then you'll see that there a number of posters who like Matt Lucas.

Of course people in the public eye are going to be critiqued for their performance. Some will be popular with some people and others not. If you don't like a performer that's fine, of course.

But "he (sic) completely unfunny and utterly annoying. I cannot bear his puerile "antics" on GBBO and am at a loss why he was ever appointed or indeed why he has a reputation for being amusing. He has been the worst part of the show for the last three years"

is just flinging insults and insinuating that he was fired. Don't like Matt Lucas - fine. Giving him a character assassination - uncalled for.

nowgoingout · 07/12/2022 12:59

Well viewing figures used to be pretty good eg 9 million for the final so in theory the presenters get decent exposure, and regular lucrative work, especially when you add in the spin off programmes.

But it lost 1.3 million viewers and 2 million viewers this year in the opening episode and in the final. C4 will have done the statistics and viewer feedback and realised that people won't watch Matt Lucas's puerile antics so will fired him as a result. They're a commercial channel so are quicker to do this than the BBC were because they have to answer to advertisers and advertising revenue.

They need to think carefully before replacing with more of the same. My feeling is they will go with someone female and less irritating else they risk repeating an expensive mistake.

Exactly. What if someone wrote in this way about Judi Dench or something? It's just objectionable.

I don't think you can pin GBBO's declining fortunes solely on Matt Lucas.

PrincessScarlett · 07/12/2022 13:05

I never minded Matt, I just think him and Noel didn't quite work together. Noel and Sandi worked better.

PrincessScarlett · 07/12/2022 13:06

Agree that plummeting viewing figures were nothing to do with Matt. More because of the shit non baking challenges the bakers were given.

Exactly. The core part of the show, the bakers and the baking challenges, just aren't as appealing anymore. 'jumped the shark' is I believe the TV term for when shows lose sight of what it was that made them popular in the first place.

Exactly, plus the fact that we've had 13 years of the show in the same format and it's possibly a bit stale now. Pun intended 🙊
