Boy George is a more terrible person than Matt Hancock and I'm sick of people pretending he isn't

Why does he get a pass for his brutal, clearly sexually motivated crime (he threatened the guy with whips and sex toys) and still have a career?

I'm so irritated I'm having to sound like I'm defending Hancock, a corrupt, inept Tory who cheated on his wife. He personifies everything wrong with Johnston's cabinet, but no he didn't kill thousands, Covid did. The decision to return vulnerable people from hospital to care homes was a terrible one, but we did the exact same thing in Scotland. He isn't a sex offender.

If Boy George had chained up a female sex worker and beat her with an iron bar and threatened to rape her with sex toys he wouldn't have ever had the opportunity to be on TV again.

Didnt BG get done for drugs in America too ?
He is a vile man, sat there tapping and chanting like a saint.

Chomolungma · 12/11/2022 07:25

I agree OP. I'm not a Tory voter but Boy George is far worse than Matt Hancock.

YeahThanks · 12/11/2022 07:27

So Boy George tortured one person, but Matt Hancock tortured thousands - it’s not an either or situation really.

TheaBrandt · 12/11/2022 07:27

Not watching it but well said! It’s outrageous he gets to pontificate and pass judgment on others who the hell does he think he is?

dandelionthistle · 12/11/2022 07:30

I don't really understand the either / or - aren't they both horrible people?

I haven't been watching it though.

mossgreen · 12/11/2022 07:32

BG was a drug addict and has served prison time for his crime. Personally I do not think ex convicts should be paid to work in light entertainment but thats a separate issue. BG is self employed and this is a job for him. MH was being paid by taxpayers when he was groping his colleague and he is being paid now, on that show, whilst not doing his job. And he has been on celebrity SAS are you tough enough this year. They are totally separate issues but MH is ripping off all of us and trying to forge himself a new media career which I think is really grim.

VollywoodHampires · 12/11/2022 07:32

I agree. I find it completely hypocritical that he makes a moral judgement on Matt Hancock when he committed such an appalling crime.

ThatGirlInACountrySong · 12/11/2022 07:34

Why shouldn't ex convicts be given a go? Stop stigmatising them!

Teadrinkingmumofone · 12/11/2022 07:35

Absolutely agree OP. And you know what I'm really enjoying watching Matt, he is so entertaining

CallMeNutribullet · 12/11/2022 07:35

Did he really torture thousands? The UK made a series of shit decisions around Covid. Devolved governments made the same decisions. Hancock was an inept puppet Health Minister and I don't believe any other Tory Health minister would have done anything differently.

It was right he resigned when he was caught breaking lock down rules. It's right that he's lost the whip. I don't like the man. But as far as I'm aware he's never threatened to rape another man with a dildo.

Howamihere · 12/11/2022 07:36

I agree. I don’t think that someone who committed a blatantly sexually motivated crime (for which they have been convicted) should be paid for ‘light entertainment’. Like him or loathe him MH has done nothing illegal. ITV should be utterly ashamed - the bbc would not have been allowed to do this.

Sillystripytail · 12/11/2022 07:37

They've both done awful things but they're not comparable really. For BG, it was 15 years ago, he's done his time. He seems to have reformed himself completely. How much longer should he punished? This is his job for the next few weeks, that's fair enough.

MH, it's a joke that he's on it. He's ignoring his real life, very important job to be there in an attempt to make a celeb of himself & promote his book. He'll probably quit his MP job when he leaves. He made some awful decisions during covid but he's not fully to blame for how the gov handled it all.

Slimjimtobe · 12/11/2022 07:37

I was thinking along similar lines - it’s shocking really that they are both being paid to entertain but then isn’t that why we all tune in ?

Would you say the same if he had imprisoned a female sex worker, beat her and threatened her with rape?

He has plenty of cash. He doesn't need to be on TV anymore. Unless you think we should be giving TV jobs to Gary Glitter and Bill Cosby?

For violent crime, no

WeAreTheHeroes · 12/11/2022 07:39

I think the same as you OP: people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Has anyone asked BG about his criminal past on IAC?

Fieldfly · 12/11/2022 07:39

MH was doing a v difficult job in a difficult time with very limited information, I do think it’s important that we don’t judge his competence relying on hindsight. He didn’t deliberately ‘torture’ people, he was trying to stop the spread of a new and dangerous virus. We can judge his hypocrisy though! But I don’t think hypocrisy is as bad as BG’s actions and BG should not be on tv. What about Sean Walsh, he’s pretty vile too?

AppleKatie · 12/11/2022 07:39

I find them both abhorrent tbh.

Matt is coming across better on the show imo but it’s such a head fuck ‘affable awkward posh boy’ v. ‘Corrupt politician who cheated on his wife in public office’.

They are both overgrown children tbh, the fake controlling chanting and ‘I just fell in love’ bullshit are two sides of the same attention seeking coin.

Sux2buthen · 12/11/2022 07:39

People keep saying he wouldn't get work if it had been a woman but that's not true at all.
The adoration for Mike Tyson speaks volumes

Afterfire · 12/11/2022 07:39

Completely agree. George is a disgusting violent man. Drugs aren’t an excuse.

PacificState · 12/11/2022 07:40

I think I agree with you OP. I think rehabilitation is really important, but it does feel like prancing around in the jungle isn't really in the spirit of humble repentance.

I wonder whether there's a really basic human dynamic in play here, which is that BG's public persona is one that the public (generally) just likes - scampish, irreverent, witty. Whereas Hancock is try-hard, self-regarding, pompous and nerdy. There's a collective urge to bully Hancock, whereas we all intuitively know that if we tried to bully BG he would eviscerate us without breaking sweat.

Wouldn't want either of them round my house for dinner, for different reasons, and the show just sounds incredibly shitty. (And millions of people watch it and probably have to take some share of the responsibility for these reprobates forcing their way back into everyone's consciousness.)

Fieldfly · 12/11/2022 07:40

Sux2 - and Jonny depp

curious79 · 12/11/2022 07:41

Personally I think it’s amusing watching BG seethe with resentment as he’s very clearly angry that Matt Hancock gets attention When he still thinks he’s the big star rather than a washed up predatory gay man from the 80s

Lilaaz · 12/11/2022 07:42

Totally agree and imagine if MH had been a veggie eating stewed prunes and sticky beans, BG would have been outraged.

BG is coming across as a ridiculous needy prat and yes his violent past should've stopped him taking part. Let's see if investigative journalist Moyles brings up this 'elephant in the room'.

AppleKatie · 12/11/2022 07:42

Yes it is definitely being upstaged that BG was seething about when MH came in.
