THE WHITE LOTUS - s2 MONDAY 9pm sky Atlantic. TV PACE. NO SPOILERS

So lotus is back

s1 was good. About holiday makers in a posh hotel and one died but various other things

quite funny

worth watching s1

there is a thread. Not by me s one

s2 is new cast and a new secret apart from jennifer Coolidge who returns as Tanya along with her lover now hubby

This season, Coolidge's hysterical and hyper-sensitive Tanya McQuoid will be joined by Jon Gries, who reprises his season one role of Tanya's lover turned new husband Greg, and Haley Lu Richardson (The Edge of Seventeen) who plays Portia, her assistant. Oscar-winner F. Murray Abraham (Amadeus), Michael Imperioli (The Sopranos), and Adam DiMarco (The Order) portray Bert, Dominic, and Albie, respectively, three generations of men from the Di Grasso family with three very different approaches to the opposite sex on a trip to Sicily to visit their ancestral home.

Also checking in are two polar opposite couples on vacation together: the prickly, newly-rich, and socially aware Harper and Ethan, played by Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation) and Will Sharpe (Landscapers), and the carefree, news-averse, lovey-dovey couple Cameron and Daphne, played by Theo James (The Time Traveler's Wife) and Meghann Fahy (The Bold Type). The separate groups are intertwined when two local girls Mia (Beatrice Granno) and Lucia (Simona Tabasco) find their way into the White Lotus, much to the chagrin of Valentina (Sabrina Impaciatorre), the often flustered manager of the hotel.

@fantasialand

your comments about what the write intended was really interesting. It confirmed some thoughts that had been spinning around my brain.

The only people who came out of this unscathed were Mia and Lucia who used sex to get what they want. Although they were poor, sex was their power and they were able to use it untroubled by pangs of conscience as they do not regard rich people as real. Just as the hotel guests in both series do not see the poor people who serve them as real so have no qualms about exploiting them or letting them down.

This was also demonstrated by the Di Grasso family expecting to turn up in a remote Sicilian village and be greeted as long lost relations. To them the Sicilians weren't real people. They were mythical fairy tale villagers who had spent their whole lives waiting to be reunited with the descendants of long lost relations who migrated a century before rather than people with lives of their own who could be intimidated by 3 strange men turning up, talking to them in a language they don't understand and trying to enter their home.

I also wonder if this is a scam that Lucia attempts every week as new guests turn up on the island - latches on to some naive holiday maker, then gets her mate Alessio to act as an aggressive pimp in order try to get some pity money out of them. If it fails there is always the next boatload of guests.

The gun, duct tape and rope might not have been for Tanya. It could just be the bloke's work bag. I have a laptop in mine...

I am not convinced they wanted to shoot Tanya. A mafioso probably always carries a gun for protection.

Roundlampshade · 15/12/2022 11:09

What sort of job requires a gun, duct tape and rope?

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/12/2022 13:00

Yes I wondered how often they did the I need £50k con

I wasn't bothered about Portia carrying her passport with her, but I was so worried about her not having her ticket. I forgot you don't need a paper one now. Thank goodness she had her phone. I presume it was on there!

I don't think they could have done it a lot, as they were very giddy at being able to go and buy new stylish/expensive clothes.

TottersBlankly · 15/12/2022 15:07

I had the impression Lucia picked her marks quite carefully - and just got by on erm … shift work usually. I mean she wouldn’t have tried “Rescue me!” on Dominic or Cameron - because they’re not young and stupid. But she probably made enough out of people like those two to pay her rent and be well dressed enough to wander smart hotels unchallenged. (Sometimes!) Then, every so often, there’s an Albie … She must have a satisfying bank balance …

I think you're all over thinking Quentin and co's plans for Tanya, and also the murder kit too. If anything, the gun, duct tape, rope et al were nothing more than red herrings used to make us think Tanya was going to be murdered. But she wasn't. The writers never intended for her to be murdered, Tanya was always going to be responsible for her own demise.

Tho if jack hadn’t of got drunk and spilled the beans Portia wouidnt have called Tanya to warn her

so she would have got on the boat happily

not tried to get off and hit head

@Blondeshavemorefun

Stop over analysing! Jack did get drunk, and Portia called Tanya.

The 'murder kit' is a classic Macguffin - a meaningless whatever whose sole purpose it to move the plot along whilst having little bearing on the outcome.

Stop over- analysing?? That is the whole point (& fun) of this thread!

coconotgrove · 15/12/2022 15:55

@Twiglets1

See I disagree. Sure, discussing is fun but picking things apart when the writers have clearly thought out exactly what we see on screen AND what happens makes many of the observations in this thread ridiculous and completely missing the point

But maybe that's just my MA in Film speaking! 🤷🏻‍♀️

😂

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/12/2022 15:57

@coconotgrove we have to analyses. That’s the whole point of tv paced threads 😂😂

Oh good because I thought that would be a waste of time.

Anyway, some of us are enjoying all the analysis on this thread.

FeelingwearyFeeelingsmall · 15/12/2022 16:28

That's assuming the writers/directors have a reason for every word and gesture and have put in no red herrings. They may well also have included things that are currently meaningless but will make sense in series 3 or 4. It's also assuming that there is no room for contradictory behaviours, conflicted feelings or ambivalence from the characters.

IRL nothing is that black and white and it is also true of good fiction - in writing on stage or on screen. It what makes something like this more satisfying and open to discussion and different interpretations than a more traditional ' good guys win, bad guys are punished and they all live happily ever' production.

TottersBlankly · 15/12/2022 17:57

Oh… @coconotgrove - I’m sad that all your academic effort has culminated in telling people, who you assume know less than you do about screenwriting, that their enjoyable ruminations on a TV show are a pointless waste of time. Xmas Grin

DH and I just flew through the series in a couple of nights. I know he turned out to be a villain but Jack is my new TV crush. Something about a filthy Essex boy 😍😬 Sad for Tanya, quite intrigued to see where they go next with it.

GetUsedToTheHeatAgain · 16/12/2022 07:50

Anyone else think Mia was a poor singer, she set my teeth on edge every time, hated her singing style.

HeartIsWhereTheHomeIs · 16/12/2022 08:52

At what level of wealth do you have a bodyguard? That’s the only thing that bugged me about Tanya. I suppose if Greg wasn’t wealthy then any amount would be worth it and certainly irl women have been killed by their husbands for a lot less money.

I know Tanya was awful but the hatred directed towards her from Greg and Quentin made me feel sorry for her.

FartOutLoudDay · 16/12/2022 09:10

Portia hints at how traumatised Tanya is earlier in the series which means I never really thought her awful, just desperate at times.
